Our Love, A Public Service - Chapter 59

Chapter 59

The car sped down the road.

Jing Rui, her hands on the steering wheel, glanced at Chi Jia in the passenger seat. "If you were afraid of being late, why didn't you get up earlier?"

Chi Jia, applying foundation in front of the small mirror, hurriedly shifted the blame to Jing Rui. "It's your fault!"

"How is that fair? A grown woman blaming me for oversleeping?" Jing Rui protested. She had woken up earlier than Chi Jia this morning and reminded her about work, but Chi Jia had clung to her, whining about not wanting to get up, and Jing Rui, hearing Chi Jia's soft, coquettish voice, had indulged her.

As a result, they were late. And now Chi Jia was blaming her for not waking her up.

Knowing she was in the wrong, Chi Jia didn't say anything more, continuing with her makeup.

Jing Rui, seeing Chi Jia's pouting lips, realized the little devil was still grumpy. After a moment of silence, Jing Rui, unable to resist, gave in and said with a smile, "I know I was wrong, I'll definitely wake you up on time next time."

As if afraid Jing Rui would be angry, Chi Jia turned to look at her, a satisfied smile on her face.

Even their bickering was sweet.

Although they often argued, one of them would always put aside their pride and try to appease the other. A slap followed by a sweet date, that was their dynamic from the very beginning.

Fifteen minutes later.

As soon as Jing Rui parked the car in front of the familiar office building, Chi Jia hurriedly unbuckled her seatbelt, ready to get out.

"Leaving just like that?" Jing Rui also unbuckled her seatbelt and grabbed Chi Jia's hand. As Chi Jia turned to her, she leaned in, a tender smile on her face. "After all the trouble I went through to get you to work, aren't you going to show some gratitude?"

That distance, that look, that tone, the implication was clear.

"What gratitude…" Chi Jia murmured, then looking into Jing Rui's eyes, she leaned in and quickly pecked Jing Rui on the lips. "I have to go to work now."

"Mmm." Jing Rui responded, but instead of letting Chi Jia go, she gently kissed her again.

Chi Jia responded with a few light kisses, her heart fluttering, then gently pushed Jing Rui away, their lips still barely touching. "I'm going to be late."

Jing Rui looked at the time, then cupped Chi Jia's face in her hands. "8:55, give me half a minute."

"Mmm…" Chi Jia's soft moan was swallowed by the kiss as she eagerly responded.

As their tongues tangled, Chi Jia's mind raced with the memories of last night, her heart pounding. If it weren't a workday, she and the vixen would probably be back in bed again…

Jing Rui had a good sense of time; half a minute meant half a minute. Just as Chi Jia was getting lost in the kiss, Jing Rui pulled away, the sudden interruption leaving her wanting more.

"Kissed you all night last night, still not enough?" Jing Rui teased Chi Jia.

Chi Jia pushed Jing Rui away, rolling her eyes. "Who was the one being so insatiable just now, not letting me go?"

She had never met anyone as shameless as Jing Rui, always so confident, always having the last word.

"If you don't go up now, you'll really be late." Jing Rui reminded her kindly.

Chi Jia didn't say anything more, quickly getting out of the car and rushing towards the building.

Beep! She punched her time card.

Still late, exactly half a minute late…

As Chi Jia walked into Design Department Three, everyone looked up.

Nothing major, just that their ever-punctual Queen Chi was late again.

"Morning~" Chi Jia casually brushed her hair aside, greeting her colleagues, a bright and cheerful smile on her face, a stark contrast to the gloomy atmosphere in the department.

After all, it was the end of the month, performance review time, everyone was stressed.

Only Miss Chi, working on her design proposals, had a smile brighter than the sun, unable to contain her happiness.

They said love could make you glow, and Chi Jia felt that being with Jing Rui had amplified the effect, perhaps because being with the vixen was always so… exciting.

Slender, fair fingers held a dark red pen, black ink flowing smoothly across the white paper, a bold signature, the only sound in the quiet office the soft scratching of the pen against the paper.

Jing Rui had high standards for her work environment; it had to be quiet.

Soft footsteps approached from outside, barely audible, yet disturbing the silence.

The footsteps stopped, and two women stood at the doorway. One was older, a few wrinkles around her eyes, but her elegant demeanor and graceful figure made it difficult to guess her age; the other was around Jing Rui's age, her hair styled in a sleek bob, her smile beautiful and aloof.

Jing Rui stood up and led her mother to the sofa, sitting down beside her. "Mom, why are you here? You didn't even tell me you were coming."

"Youyou is starting work here today, so I came along to see you."

"Long time no see." Pei You smiled at Jing Rui, her usual aloofness softening slightly.

Jing Rui gave a polite smile. "So the general manager my father recommended was you."

"That's right."

"What's with that attitude? Youyou came all the way to L City to help you, you should be grateful." Jing Rui's mother reprimanded her for her indifferent reaction. She was close to Pei You's mother, treating Pei You like another daughter.

"Of course, I'm grateful, just a little surprised. Why did you suddenly decide to come to L City?"

Pei You said half-jokingly, "To learn from you, of course."

Jing Rui smiled without replying, changing the subject. "Since you're here, why don't you stay for a few days?"

"Of course, but I have a gathering with some old friends tonight, so I won't be joining you. You have to treat Youyou to a nice dinner."

Jing Rui looked at Pei You and smiled. "Tonight's dinner is definitely on me."

Jing Rui didn't choose Number Nine for dinner, nor did she cook herself. Instead, she chose a Michelin-starred restaurant in the most bustling part of L City, the ambiance elegant, the food exquisite. But Pei You seemed slightly disappointed.

"I thought you would take me to Number Nine. Actually, I wanted to try your cooking." Pei You said, swirling the wine in her glass, a hint of sadness in her voice.

"Sorry, I have another appointment tonight, I can't stay with you for too long."

Pei You raised her glass. "I understand, you're a busy woman."

They chatted about work for a bit, then after a glass of wine, Pei You suddenly smiled, reminiscing. "Do you remember? We had a childhood engagement, even though we were both girls."

Jing Rui took a sip of her wine. "Did we? I don't really remember."

"Then you must remember when I was seventeen, heartbroken from my first love. I said if we couldn't find the right person, we would be together, and you agreed..."

The topic was getting a bit personal.

Jing Rui smiled dismissively. "Just childish nonsense, and you still remember it?"

"I..."

"Excuse me, I need to make a call." Jing Rui checked the time; it was 6 PM. She interrupted Pei You, not wanting to continue this conversation. It was time to call Chi Jia.

Jing Rui knew Pei You was interested in her.

She had been quite casual with her past relationships, easily getting together with someone after a bit of flirting, then breaking up after a few days. But she had never considered Pei You, they were too close, she didn't want to make things awkward between their families if they broke up.

Jing Rui was a known player, fickle and with countless ex-girlfriends. Pei You had always known this, having followed Jing Rui's love life closely all these years, yet she still liked her. They were almost thirty now, their love lives a mess, and Pei You thought Jing Rui should have had enough fun and start thinking about settling down.

Pei You's move to L City this time was a deliberate attempt to pursue Jing Rui.

Pei You waited for Jing Rui to finish her call, then heard Jing Rui's opening words, "Babe," and she smiled wryly. Miss Jing was still the same.

"Babe, are you off work yet?" Jing Rui didn't try to hide it, talking to Chi Jia on the phone in her usual sweet tone right in front of Pei You. Because of Chi Jia's sensitive stomach, whenever she had time, she would call Chi Jia during dinner time.

"Not yet, I'm working overtime." Chi Jia stood in the corridor outside her office, looking down at her shoes, a sweet smile on her face as she listened to Jing Rui's voice.

"Have you had dinner?" Jing Rui asked.

"Not yet, have you?"

"I'm eating now. Eat something before continuing with your work, and no instant noodles." Jing Rui said patiently, then added softly, "I'll cook you a nice meal when I'm free."

"I know, you're so nagging." Chi Jia was reluctant to hang up; they were both busy with work, especially Jing Rui, with her endless social engagements, they didn't have much time together. They had been dating for over half a month, and she hadn't even been on a proper date with Jing Rui, their limited time together spent mostly in bed.

Pei You's expression darkened. She didn't want to eavesdrop, but hearing Jing Rui flirting with another woman right in front of her was difficult to bear.

"You're still so good at sweet-talking women." Pei You tried to appear calm and nonchalant, but her forced smile only made it worse.

Jing Rui didn't try to hide it. "She's my girlfriend, of course I'll spoil her."

Hearing those words, Pei You's expression turned even darker, a lump forming in her throat, her smile stiff and unnatural. She was speechless for a moment, then finally confessed, "I came here for you."

"Pei You." Jing Rui's tone warned her not to continue.

"Let's date." Pei You took a deep breath. "You love novelty, so why not give me a try? I'm not any worse than your other girlfriends."

"Don't joke around." Jing Rui thought her phone call with Chi Jia had made her intentions clear enough. "I have a girlfriend."

"I'm not joking, and I don't mind." Pei You's voice was calm. "Haven't you had enough girlfriends? How many have there been? You probably can't even remember. Give me a chance, and you'll see, I'm not like the women you usually date…"

"What kind of women?!" Jing Rui's temper flared, her brow furrowing. "Pei You, I don't want to get angry with you."

"I've already told my mother, I like you. And she supports us being together."
