Chapter 64
Zhou Li received news from his superiors that Zhang Yongzhen had been killed at the research institute, and the surveillance footage had been destroyed. They were currently investigating the surrounding area and instructed him to observe Zuo Luohuan and Ji Yuezhi's group for any unusual activity.
Jiang Hong and Luo Shaoyuan had been enjoying themselves at the hotel for days, their presence visible everywhere. Zuo Luohuan and Ji Yuezhi, on the other hand, remained in their room, seemingly engaged in intimate activities. Although they couldn't hear any sounds, the frequent room cleaning service throughout the day spoke volumes.
Zhou Li reported the group's situation to his superiors, but they questioned whether he had witnessed anything firsthand.
With the curtains drawn, the TV on, and no surveillance cameras inside the rooms—only a small section of the hallway visible—how could he possibly see anything directly?
Upon hearing this, his superiors immediately ordered him to find a way to open Ji Yuezhi's room and confirm their presence and activities.
Zhou Li had no choice but to send the hotel manager and some thugs to Ji Yuezhi's room.
...
“Director Zhou is quite something, sending us to check if they're really up to that ,” one thug remarked as they left the room.
“The pheromones were practically overflowing. No wonder they're holed up in there all day,” another added.
“Top-tier Alpha and Omega, after all. They're even more intense than others during their heats,” a third chimed in.
The hotel manager stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the lobby, his demeanor completely different from the subservient act he'd put on moments before. He clicked his tongue a few times, adding lewdly, “I'll say this much, that Omega is incredibly alluring. The way his eyes looked, all watery… Tsk, tsk.”
“Manager, did you see Young Master Ji?” one of the thugs asked curiously. “Zuo Luohuan moved too fast; I couldn't get a clear look.”
“Her pheromones were so strong I could barely lift my head,” another agreed.
“I only caught a glimpse,” the manager said, a hint of regret in his voice. “Let's go report back to Director Zhou that everything's normal inside.”
Believing their apologies were sufficient, the group dispersed after reaching the lobby. The hotel manager resumed his usual welcoming smile as he attended to guests.
Just after assisting a guest, he heard the ding of the elevator and instinctively glanced over. He was met with the sight of Zuo Luohuan, her expression cold and unreadable.
After settling Ji Yuezhi, Zuo Luohuan had come straight down, following the group without even bothering to put on her jacket.
“Miss Zuo,” the hotel manager stammered, his face instantly contorted with a forced apology. “It was our negligence earlier that led to…”
Zuo Luohuan stepped out of the elevator and walked directly towards him. Without a word, she kicked him to the ground.
Unsuspecting guests in the lobby shrieked and instinctively moved away.
Zuo Luohuan slowly approached the manager, looking down at him. “Which hand opened the door?”
The manager, curled up on the floor, his face ashen, couldn't speak. Zuo Luohuan's kick had been merciless.
Zuo Luohuan chuckled. “It seems you can't even remember.”
She proceeded to stomp on each of his hands, breaking them one by one. His screams sent chills down the spines of everyone present.
“Miss Zuo, Miss Zuo, what's going on?” Zhou Li rushed over, seemingly roused from sleep, a robe draped haphazardly over his shoulders. “Let's talk this through.”
“Your hotel manager, with a room key and a group of men, opened my door and then claimed it was a mistake,” Zuo Luohuan said, grabbing the manager by the hair and dragging him towards the front desk. She slammed his head against the optical computer.
Only after the computer shattered did she release him, tossing the half-conscious manager aside. “Since the system isn't working, might as well smash it.”
Zhou Li seethed inwardly, but his face was a mask of fear. “You're absolutely right, Miss Zuo. These systems are outdated and should have been replaced long ago. Their carelessness is unacceptable! They deserve to be punished!”
“Indeed,” Zuo Luohuan replied, looking down at him. She tilted her head. “Before we arrived, you promised the Star Lord you'd take good care of us. Is this what you consider hospitality?”
Zhou Li bowed slightly. “I sincerely apologize, Miss Zuo. This is entirely our fault.”
“Failure to fulfill one's duties… according to the Group Army's methods, is punishable,” Zuo Luohuan said, stepping closer to him.
Zhou Li stiffened, looking up. “Miss Zuo…”
Zuo Luohuan patted his face with the back of her hand. “What, worried I'll hit you too?”
Hearing this, Zhou Li breathed a sigh of relief, thinking she would still maintain some semblance of decorum.
“Then you're not wrong to worry,” Zuo Luohuan continued.
Zhou Li's expression froze, wondering if he'd misheard. The next moment, she had him by the throat, choking him. Just as he thought he would die, she released him, throwing him against a lobby pillar.
Ignoring the searing pain in his back, Zhou Li clutched his throat, gasping for air and coughing violently. He lay sprawled on the floor, looking as if he would cough up a lung.
“Next time you barge into our room,” Zuo Luohuan said, looking at the two men on the floor, “it might be better to just gouge out your eyes.”
Everyone watched as Zuo Luohuan entered the elevator, no one daring to stop her. She perfectly embodied the power and privilege of a Group Army heir, especially since the hotel was clearly in the wrong.
Back in Ji Yuezhi's room, Zuo Luohuan paused at the door, then turned to wash her hands thoroughly in the bathroom. She grabbed a warm towel before returning.
They had purposely not used the purifier to clear the pheromones from the room. As a result, Ji Yuezhi, resting on the bed, hadn't recovered. Without an Alpha's comfort, his reaction had only intensified.
Zuo Luohuan saw him leaning against the headboard, his fingers gripping the white sheets so tightly it was hard to tell whether the sheets or his knuckles were whiter.
She turned on the circulating purifier, sat down, and gently pried his fingers open. His fingers instinctively curled around hers.
Letting him hold her hand, Zuo Luohuan freed her other hand and lifted his face. Ji Yuezhi was burning up. He wasn't in heat, but Zuo Luohuan's pheromones easily triggered a response in him. From prolonged suppression, the flush on his face had receded, leaving only pallor.
Zuo Luohuan helped him lean against her shoulder and gently wiped the sweat from his face with the warm towel. “I've turned on the purifier. You'll feel better soon. Just bear with it.”
Ji Yuezhi vaguely heard her voice and opened his eyes to look at her, his voice hoarse. “…How soon?”
“Are you very uncomfortable?” Zuo Luohuan asked, frowning at the sound of his voice.
The Omega, soothed by the faint lingering scent of her pheromones, nuzzled against her shoulder. “Mm.”
Taking it as a nod, Zuo Luohuan tossed the towel aside and began gently massaging the gland at the back of his neck.
The massage brought Ji Yuezhi comfort. His eyes, rimmed with red, gazed at her chin. Though his mind was a jumble, one thought remained clear: in his current state, she wouldn't mind whatever he did.
Acting on impulse, he tilted his head up and kissed her chin, his eyes fluttering closed, lashes trembling slightly.
Zuo Luohuan's hand paused on his neck, but she didn't push him away. Instead, she moved her hand up to gently cradle his head, so he wouldn't strain himself.
Ji Yuezhi leaned against her, his gaze growing hazy. He started to straighten up, his lips brushing against hers, seeking a proper kiss.
Just as their lips were about to meet, Zuo Luohuan turned her head slightly, and he only managed to graze the corner of her mouth.
Startled by her avoidance, Ji Yuezhi's eyes cleared. He pulled away from her, sitting up. “…Did the report get sent to Commissioner Zuo?”
Zuo Luohuan didn't answer immediately. She helped him settle against the headboard. “I'll get you some water. Wet your throat first.”
Ji Yuezhi looked away, his gaze fixed on the side table. “Thank you.”
The lingering scent of icy snow and sweet iris still hung in the air, a fresh, watery sweetness, but the distance between them felt like a sudden chasm.
