The Guide - Chapter 5
05. Early Summer, On the Hydrangea Path
Sorang, who had just fallen asleep in the cozy cave, opened his eyes at the faint noise. It was clearly the sound of someone’s footsteps, but no one in Muyeongdang would dare to step into Sorang’s territory at such an early hour. Sorang, who hadn’t lost his instincts as a beast, quietly got up and prepared himself.
Is it an intruder? How did they even get in? Sorang, who had been listening attentively to identify the uninvited guest, noticed a familiar scent and came out of the cave with a slightly surprised expression.
“Ga-on. What are you doing here at this time?”
“Ah, Sorang. I’m…, taking a walk.”
“A walk…?”
Sorang’s eyes widened at the unexpected answer. In all the years that he had spent with Ga-on, he had never seen her spend her time so leisurely. She had always been busy, and never had the time for herself. What’s gotten into her all of a sudden…? Did something big happen?
“Why?”
“I was thinking about getting some exercise.”
“Why?”
“I heard that I sleep better at night if I exercise during the day.”
“Are you saying that you can’t sleep right now? You haven’t slept all night? And you’re exercising?”
“Someone recommended that I do some aerobic exercise…”
“Who did such a thoughtful thing?”
“…”
Sorang, who had been bombarding Ga-on with questions since it was suspicious that she was doing something she wouldn’t normally do, narrowed his eyes when she couldn’t answer his question. It was surprising that Ga-on, who was usually an open book, had something that she couldn't tell him, but what was even more bewildering was how her scent had suddenly changed.
What is… this? It’s not that hot, why is she sweating all of a sudden? And why does she smell like this? It’s the… smell that emanates from youngsters who are in love…. What is she even thinking…? Wait, is she sick?
Sorang, whose heart dropped, looked up at Ga-on with a worried expression, but Ga-on, who had been reminded of a memory that she had tried to suppress, did not notice Sorang’s serious expression.
- I want to hold your hand, I want to hug you, I want to kiss you…. I like you in a way that a man likes a woman.
It was her first time receiving such a direct confession in almost one thousand years that she had lived. When she was still an ordinary human, she had received a few marriage proposals, but they were all done through her family, so she had never met the other person directly. Because of that, she hadn’t learned how to refuse elegantly. She thought that she did refuse him since it was something that could never happen, but she couldn’t remember what she had said exactly since she was too bewildered.
- I apologize for surprising you. It wasn't something that I should have said, but I was also quite flustered…. Anyway, I understand what you’re saying. I won’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable.
Ji-won, who had bowed politely, had acted exactly the same as he had before. He wasn’t being overly cautious or careful. At the hotel and on the plane back, he had always been calm and took care of Ga-on’s condition meticulously. She felt bad for him.
It wasn't just simple kindness and consideration. Now that she knew how he truly felt, his behavior towards her seemed different. He had been doing all that because he liked her….
- Is your shoulder… okay?
Ga-on, who had not known how to react and kept her mouth shut, had finally talked to Ji-won again at the arrival gate of Incheon Airport.
- Yes, it’s fine. It’s not that painful even though it looks bad.
- Can you drive? Let’s go with my car….
- No. I called a driver.
He’s fast. When did he even…. It means he’s not in a good condition to drive…. Just as she was about to ask him something, she missed her chance since the driver, who had come to pick her up, came up to them and took her luggage. She had a lot of questions, like whether he was going straight to the hospital or if there was anyone to take care of him at home, but she couldn’t ask anything.
- Thank you for your hard work, CEO. Please get home safely.
- Okay…, thank you for your hard work, Director Cha.
And then, after returning home, she couldn’t sleep at all. How could a human have such feelings for me? At first, she had thought that he was just a bold young man, but when did his gaze change? Her curiosity, which she had no way of resolving, kept stimulating her nerves. She was the type to not agonize over things that could not be solved, but this was not something that she could easily put down.
“Ga-on, are you sick? Was the business trip too much for you?”
Ga-on, who had been deep in thought, was startled by Sorang’s worried voice.
“No, I’m fine.”
It was too easy, in every way. I thought, how can someone be so kind and considerate? And I thought it was fascinating that a young person had the same taste as me. But he was doing all that because he saw me as a woman, not his boss…. What am I… supposed to do with this? It would probably just pass if I leave it alone, and it’ll eventually become nothing, but to a human with a short lifespan, a day is too precious to just waste like this.
“CEO, CEO! Where are you?!”
“Ah….”
Ga-on laughed softly when she heard Hee-ju’s urgent voice from afar. She must be shocked since I’m not in my room. It must be her first time experiencing this. I was too out of it when I came out that I forgot to tell her. I can't be this distracted. Director Cha is a smart man, so he'll take care of his own feelings. I… don't have to worry about it.
“I’m here.”
“What are you doing here? Did something bad enter the house?”
“No, I was just taking a walk. And chatting with Sorang.”
That’s not true. She woke me up and didn’t say anything about what was bothering her and she’s been thinking hard about it all by herself. Although Sorang wiggled the corners of his mouth with a dissatisfied look, he didn’t say anything. Well, there are probably a lot of things that the Jungcheonju has to deal with. Okay, I’ll let it go this time. Just… don’t get sick. There’s nothing more pathetic than being alone and sick.
“Sorang, I’m sorry for waking you up.”
“It’s fine. Go eat.”
It seems like she finally realized that this was my sleeping time. Tsk tsk. What is she so worried about? Sorang, who was looking at Ga-on anxiously as she went to the main building with Hee-ju, yawned widely and went back into his cave. Sleep was essential to keep his fur shiny, so he needed to get at least the minimum amount of sleep, unless it was the end of the world.
Beep beep beep beep beep.
Ji-won, who had been lying on the bed with his eyes closed, opened his eyes fiercely at the sound of the door lock being pressed. Yeon Hae-su, that bastard! How did he even know that I changed the passcode? Should I install a padlock? No, I need to move somewhere far away. I’m leaving Seoul soon!
“Hyung! Hyung! I heard that you got hurt! Where are you, hyung? Are you okay?”
Hae-su, who had opened the bedroom door dramatically, flinched and backed away at Ji-won’s glare.
“W, wow. At least you look very energetic. Your eyes could kill a bull, hyung.”
“I don’t know about a bull, but it seems like I can kill you.”
“Ahaha…”
Do-gyeom, who had an awkward expression, peeked out from behind Hae-su. What are you doing here? You should be stopping him from making a fuss early in the morning, yet you followed him here? When Ji-won glared at him, almost as if sending a telepathic message, Do-gyeom sighed and started making excuses.
“I tried to stop him, hyung. Not once or twice, I told him countless times. I kept telling him until we were at your front door. But does he listen to my words? He said that he had to see your face himself no matter what. He was nagging all night long.”
“So you just told him my passcode?”
“That’s right! The passcode! Hyung, why did you only tell Do-gyeom hyung and not me? Isn’t that too much? I was so hurt that I almost cried!”
“It’s because you just barge in like this! Seo Do-gyeom doesn’t do that even though he knows it!”
Ji-won, who had yelled at him, touched his eyes, which had become hot with anger. Leave me alone, you bastards. I might not look like it but I’m very hurt right now. I used up all my energy trying to look cool in front of a girl, so I have no strength left physically and emotionally!
- Director Cha, do you even know how old I am?
- I have a rough idea.
- Roughly…. No, more than that…. I don’t even know… what to say to this. It’s something that I had never even thought about…. Anyway, this is just not possible. So let’s just pretend that I didn’t hear it…. No…, I can’t do that since I’ve already heard it…. Still…, haa.
- I apologize for surprising you. It wasn't something that I should have said, but I was also quite flustered…. Anyway, I understand what you’re saying. I won’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable.
Although he tried to act nonchalantly to calm down Ga-on, who had been shocked, he felt hurt since he had been clearly rejected. He wondered if it would have been better if she just didn’t know anything, just like last time. He hadn’t expected her to accept his feelings right away, but… this was a huge blow.
“Hyung, does it hurt a lot? Are you feeling dizzy? Just wait a moment. I’ll make you some porridge.”
“What porridge? Hey, Yeon Hae-su! If you take even one step into the kitchen! You get back here!”
Ji-won, who had jumped up from his seat, yelled at Hae-su, but Hae-su just went straight to the kitchen with the bag he had brought with him. It seemed like his mind was set on providing food to a patient, so he wasn’t listening to anything else.
“Lie down, hyung. Calm down. It’ll be a big problem if your wound opens up.”
“Do I look calm right now? Haven’t you even tasted that salt porridge?!”
“I did. And I spat it out right away. Just pretend to eat it when Hae-su brings it. He was so worried. He snuck out of the training camp, so he can’t stay here for long. I’ll order something for you once he leaves.”
“Ah….”
Ji-won, who had lied down on the bed while closing his eyes tightly, sighed deeply while roughly rubbing his face. I'm not in any condition to care about someone else’s feelings. So just leave me alone!
“By the way, hyung, are you really not that badly hurt? You don’t have to be hospitalized, right?”
“It’s not that bad. It’s just a scratch. There’s nothing they can do at the hospital except dress it.”
“Then why are you being so dramatic? You don’t look too good.”
“My heart hurts.”
“What now? Did something happen with the CEO there?”
Ji-won let out a long sigh that almost sounded like a groan, and waved his hand dismissively.
“It’s none of your business. I don’t even want to talk about it.”
“You knew it was going to be difficult from the beginning.”
“Seo Do-gyeom.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll leave. Get some rest.”
Although Do-gyeom shut his mouth obediently, the house did not become quiet again. Hae-su, who had been making all sorts of noises in the kitchen for over an hour, woke Ji-won up and made him sit down at the table before chattering endlessly. It was the first time that Ji-won realized that this was what people meant when they said their ears were bleeding.
“Try it, hyung. I think this one is really good. The problem last time was that it was too salty, so I barely put any salt in it this time. I also added a lot of cabbage and onions since they’re good for inflammation….”
“I’ll eat it, so just shut your mouth.”
“Was I being too loud? Sorry, hyung. I was so worried, but I’m so glad to see that you’re safe…. When I first heard that you got hurt by an evil spirit, I almost shot the wrong target.”
“…!”
Ji-won and Do-gyeom, who had been staring at Ji-won, who had been struggling to lift the spoon that felt heavier than a rock, widened their eyes in shock.
“Hey, you crazy bastard!”
“I said I almost shot. I didn’t actually shoot.”
“You really think that’s okay! I told you not to bring your phone to training!”
“I didn’t bring it. Our coach told me. His wife is one of the guides who went to Nonseum. Hehe, even the coach turned pale since his hands were shaking.”
Ji-won, who had been staring at Hae-su, turned his head to the side with his mouth shut. If he opened his mouth right now, all that would come out would be curses, but cursing also required a lot of energy. He was too tired to even bother with Hae-su right now.
The only way to get Hae-su out of the house quickly was to finish the porridge. Ji-won, who had been staring blankly at the porridge, where the ingredients were asserting themselves strongly, mustered his courage and put the spoon in his mouth. And then, he hesitated for a moment before slowly starting to chew.
“How is it, hyung? It’s not salty, right? Is it okay? Is it edible?”
“…Yeah.”
He had no idea what Hae-su had been doing in the kitchen for an hour, but the rice, which was not cooked at all, felt like raw rice itself, and the vegetables, which were cut into large chunks as if they were meant for stew, had a strange fishy smell whenever he chewed them, and surprisingly, the salt that was supposed to be ‘a little’ was all clumped together, and crunched as he chewed, but it wasn't too bad to swallow, so he thought that it could be classified as ‘edible’ in the broadest sense.
“See? I told you I was confident about this one. Try it, hyung.”
Do-gyeom gulped while looking at the bowl that had been placed in front of him. Although the smell itself was suspicious, he couldn’t refuse since even Ji-won, who was a picky eater, was eating it silently. Do-gyeom, who had hesitantly put a very small amount of porridge into his mouth, made an indescribable expression and twitched his eyebrows.
“How is it? Is it good?”
“Hae-su, do you not… taste it while you’re cooking?”
“No! Why would I when I’m following the recipe?”
“Then why don’t you try it and tell me what you think?”
“I already had breakfast at the training camp.”
“Right…. Now that I think about it, I also think I had breakfast. That's why I’m not hungry at all.”
Do-gyeom, who had put down his spoon right away, quietly clicked his tongue while looking at Ji-won who was emptying his bowl without saying anything. Hyung is really not doing well right now. The fact that he is eating this garbage porridge when he usually doesn’t even acknowledge a one-star Michelin restaurant means that he’s lost his sense of taste from the shock. What even happened?
“By the way, why doesn't the CEO use her sword these days? I heard that she used to cut down evil spirits without hesitation.”
The continuous movement of the spoon stopped. Ah… I don’t know what it is but I think Hae-su just touched something dangerous. Do-gyeom, who had noticed the change in Ji-won's eyes, kicked Hae-su’s foot under the table, but Hae-su just blinked innocently.
“Why are you kicking me? Ji-won hyung wouldn’t have been hurt if the CEO had cut down that ghost. I think the CEO is raising us too strictly. She’s so cold-hearted…. She should loosen up a bit, especially since her term is almost over.”
I've never seen such an ungrateful bastard. Ji-won, whose eyes were filled with complicated emotions, looked at Hae-su and sighed before putting down his spoon. Right, what would you know? At least you shouldn't be saying those words about the CEO.
“Hyung, why are you looking at me like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re wondering whether you should punch someone who is complaining about losing their luxury wallet after you saved their life.”
“…You’re like a ghost.”
Ji-won, who had murmured in a low voice, stood up from his seat.
“Huh? Are you done, hyung?”
“Yeah, I ate a lot. I need to get some rest now. I’ll have someone else clean it up, so just leave it. It was good.”
Hae-su, who had been staring at Ji-won’s back as he was leaving for his bedroom, sighed deeply.
“Ji-won hyung must be really sick. I feel so bad for him.”
“You did your best. Ji-won hyung will appreciate it. So let’s go now. He can’t rest if we’re here. He’s a very sensitive person.”
“Okay. Just one phone call.”
Hae-su, who had nodded obediently, picked up his phone and pressed a speed dial number.
“Madam Kwon! It’s Hae-su. I want to have the oxtail stew that you made, so can we have our high-ranking guide meeting at Muyeongdang this weekend? Yes. You know that Ji-won hyung got hurt, right? I want to make him something to help him recover but I can’t make oxtail stew myself.”
Do-gyeom, who had been moving the dishes to the sink since he thought that he should at least clean the table even though Ji-won had told them to just leave it, dropped the dishes and ran to Hae-su, but it was already too late.
“Hey, you should at least ask Ji-won hyung before you….”
“Yes, thank you! Then, we’ll go there Saturday evening.”
Slam! Ji-won, whose face had turned black, opened the door almost as if he was about to break it. Ah…, I don’t know anymore. Do-gyeom sighed deeply and closed his eyes tightly when he saw the slipper that was in Ji-won’s hand flying straight at Hae-su like a bullet.
“Director, do you have any plans tonight?”
Do-gyeom, who had been anxiously tapping on his desk, came to his senses at Ro-a's careful question. He had thought that time was flying by today, but he didn’t realize that he was showing it this much.
“Yes.”
“You can go if you’re busy. It’s okay if I come back tomorrow.”
Do-gyeom, who had been staring at Ro-a, shook his head slightly. Although he usually tried to maintain his distance when he was working with women, he spoke with a slightly softer voice since he felt bad for making her feel awkward.
“It’s not that I’m in a hurry, but I just don’t want to go.”
“…Yes?”
“Well, there’s a reason for that…. Anyway, I wanted to change one word in the lyrics here. ‘Warm’ to ‘balmy’?”
“Yes, I’m sorry.”
Do-gyeom furrowed his brow slightly as he saw Ro-a bowing her head. What kind of life did she even live? How much did she have to read the room to apologize for things that were not even her fault and always look so discouraged?
“Ro-a ssi.”
“Yes?”
“Why do you want to change it to ‘balmy’?”
Do-gyeom deliberately made his gaze softer in order to encourage Ro-a, who seemed discouraged. Ro-a, who seemed to realize that he wasn’t blaming her, took a deep breath and started to speak hesitantly.
“Well…, it’s a high note, so it was difficult to pronounce with a double consonant…. And the lyrics overall have a soft vibe, so I thought it would be… better to use a word that is… weaker.”
“I see. Then let’s sing it like that. I think that sounds better as well.”
“…!”
Ro-a’s eyes widened as if she hadn’t expected him to accept it so easily. Do-gyeom, who had been feeling slightly complicated, continued speaking nonchalantly.
“Ro-a ssi. It might be something that I made, but now it’s your song. People will remember it as your song as well. What I’m trying to say is that what matters is how you feel about the song. I don't know what kind of composer you will meet and work with in the future, but if you feel like there’s something wrong, you have to tell them and fix it, no matter how difficult it is. Otherwise, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
“…Yes, thank you.”
Oh my. Even if she’s an actor who is rich in emotions, how is she going to survive in this cruel world if she cries over something like this? Do-gyeom, who had nonchalantly put a tissue in front of Ro-a, asked about an invisible object.
“You took the bracelet off.”
“Yes, since you said it’s bad.”
“Did you believe me right away?”
“I didn’t think that you would lie to me when we just met.”
Do-gyeom smiled faintly while listening to Ro-a, who responded firmly despite her tears. She’s earnest. She must be that way, or she wouldn’t be working with a picky person like PD Kang.
“Where did you put it?”
“In the storage room of my house in the countryside. It felt weird to keep it in my studio apartment…. And I can’t sell it or throw it away either.”
“You did well. I’ll take a closer look at it when I have the chance. But, no matter what you do with it, it’s better not to keep it for too long.”
Although not all old things have ghosts attached to them, there are certain items that attract ghosts. The bracelet that Ro-a had been wearing was one of those items. It probably belonged to someone who treasured and cherished it for a long time. Ironically, both people and ghosts want things with good energy. Unfortunately, in those cases, destroying the item is often the only solution.
“Yes.”
“I know it would be upsetting and a shame, but….”
“My mom will understand. If it’s something that is really hurting me.”
“Okay. We can talk about that later. Now, sing it with the changed lyrics. Let’s go to the recording booth.”
Do-gyeom, who had been listening to Ro-a’s song through his headphones, took them off and turned on the speaker. Then, the clear and refreshing voice filled the studio. She practiced a lot. She must have thought very hard about where to breathe. If she sings with a little more confidence…, this is a jackpot!
The warm sunlight is shining on the green forest. Do-gyeom's smile widened as the song reached its climax.
“…Then I’ll go to Ilsan. Since there are a lot of things to keep an eye out for there, it’ll be more effective if I go instead of you or Hae-su. I’m busy on Monday and Tuesday, so I’ll go on Wednesday. Hae-su, you go to Cheongju when you’re free. It's not that far from the training camp, is it?”
“Yeah, it’s not that far. About 40 minutes by car…. But hyung, next Wednesday is a full moon, right? Won’t it be dangerous if you go alone?”
“I’ll go with him.”
Ji-won, who had not said a word ever since they stepped inside Muyeongdang, finally opened his mouth. Being at the house of someone who had rejected him was harder on his mental state than he had thought, but his complicated feelings couldn't affect his work. Unless he quit being a guide, he didn't want to give off the impression that he was irresponsible. It was a matter of pride.
“Wouldn't it be better for you to rest a bit longer? It’s a rule that guides who were injured at the scene don’t go to another scene until they are fully recovered.”
“A rule is just a rule. It’s not like I injured my drawing hand, so I’m fine as long as I don’t overdo it. I was told to rest for four weeks, how am I supposed to wait that long? Yeon Hae-su can’t move around freely either, can you handle everything alone for a month?”
“Well…, that would be difficult.”
“I’m just going with you just in case, so come pick me up at the scheduled time. I’m sure you’re not shameless enough to ask me to take the bus, right?”
“Is there anyone who asks the person that they invited to take a bus?”
When Hae-su’s eyes widened as if he had heard something unbelievable, Ji-won, who had been moving his lips in disbelief, turned his head to the side. Right, let’s not argue with him. It’s better for my mental health. It’s not the first time he has said something shocking.
“And I’ll go to Sokcho after I’m done with Ilsan.”
“Are you sure? It would be tiring just driving back and forth.”
“I have to go there anyway. There’s no point in you guys going. If he runs away to the sea, he’ll be out of your range right away, and the waves will be too loud for the song to work. And I can't ask the CEO to go to such a small scene. I have a vacation home in Sokcho, so I can rest whenever I need to.”
Hae-su, who had been looking at Ji-won with a worried expression, clasped his hands together in excitement as soon as he heard the mention of a vacation home.
“A vacation home! Wow, that’s cool. This is my first time seeing someone with a vacation home! Is it near the beach? Can you see the sea from the house? I want to go too, hyung.”
“You can follow me if you’re willing to give up your national team spot.”
“Then how about we all go together in September after the world championships? The East Sea is great in the fall! It's romantic. I’ll be back on the 16th, so I can go right away after two days of adjusting to the time difference. Then we’re going to Sokcho on September 18th!”
“Who said that?!”
Ji-won, who had been trying to ignore him, yelled and slammed the desk. If Hae-su started making specific plans, it might become reality before they knew it, so he had to cut him off right away.
“Do you think my house is your playground or something? You want me to give you a hard time? And why should I go see the sea with you anyway?”
“Tsk, you don’t have anyone to go see the sea with anyway.”
Oh no, Hae-su. You’re rubbing salt in Ji-won’s wounds. I can’t save you if he hits you. You might be an athlete, but you can’t overcome the difference in weight class. And I heard that Ji-won hyung used to box in high school. You’re really going to die if you keep fooling around. Just as Do-gyeom, who had a very awkward expression, had been watching their argument and figuring out when to step in, the door of the guesthouse was opened without a sound, and Hee-ju, who had her usual gentle smile, came in.
“Please have dinner now that the meeting is over. The CEO will also be here soon.”
“Is the CEO at home?”
“Yes, she just got home.”
Do-gyeom felt envious and slightly annoyed at Hae-su who was smiling brightly without knowing anything. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at Ji-won’s face. I don’t even like oxtail stew that much…. Although he desperately wanted to go home and make some ramen, Do-gyeom, who couldn’t control the situation, had no choice but to leave the guesthouse with heavy steps.
Just like Do-gyeom had worried, the dinner was very awkward and uncomfortable. Of course, it wasn’t obvious on the surface. Ga-on was not a person with many expressions, and Ji-won was the best at controlling his expression out of everyone that Do-gyeom knew. So even Hee-ju, who was Ga-on’s right-hand woman, not to mention Hae-su who thought that eating was the only way to read the room, did not feel anything off.
However, Do-gyeom, who knew what was going on, noticed some awkward moments that the two couldn’t hide. It was like that even though he was trying his best not to look at them. He was so busy reading the room that he couldn’t even tell whether the oxtail stew was sweet or salty.
“Please eat a lot, Director Cha. I heard that you went through a lot this time.”
“You’re too kind. I’ll enjoy it.”
“This is the first time the CEO has come back from a long business trip looking so healthy. She usually comes back looking like a ghost…. I heard that Director Cha took special care of her. And the CEO wouldn’t stop praising you….”
“Madam Kwon. If you called me here to help me recover, then at least let me eat.”
The gazes of the two met briefly in the air. It was only for three seconds, but so much was being exchanged that it was dizzying to watch.
What, I thought that he got rejected cleanly after confessing properly this time. There’s definitely something between the two, but? Ji-won hyung definitely needs more time to sort out his feelings, but the CEO's eyes are also not normal. And I didn't know that the CEO could look at someone like that. I thought that she just saw us all as rocks. If things go like this….
“Oh my, I was talking too much. Now please enjoy your meal. I packed some side dishes for you, so please take them with you.”
“…Thank you.”
“I heard that you live alone. Please come here anytime if you need….”
“Madam Kwon.”
“Yes, CEO. I’ll be quiet now.”
When Hee-ju, who had responded politely, went to the kitchen, a heavy silence filled the table. Do-gyeom didn’t have the ability to break the awkward silence, but fortunately, Hae-su, who wasn't affected by the atmosphere, started chattering, so he could finally breathe a little. There’s a saying that even poop can be useful.
“Ah, I really think Madam Kwon is the best cook in the world. Don’t tell anyone, but she’s even better than my mom. Ji-won hyung, don’t you agree? It's so good, right? Doesn’t it melt in your mouth?”
“…Yeah.”
Hae-su’s face fell at Ji-won’s indifferent response. Do-gyeom, who had been worried that Hae-su might offend Ji-won, desperately tried to distract him. It was a truly touching effort.
“Yeon Hae-su, be honest. You asked Madam Kwon to make this not because you wanted Ji-won hyung to recover, but because you wanted to eat it, right?”
“W, what are you talking about! I don’t even like oxtail stew that much!”
“At least wipe the sauce off of your mouth before you talk.”
“Why are you being so mean to me today? You’re not supposed to bother even a cow when it’s eating.”
“It’s not a cow, it’s a dog.”
“I know! I was… joking! Don’t you even know that?!”
When Ga-on, who had been watching Do-gyeom and Hae-su bicker, chuckled, Ji-won, who had been eating quietly, looked up instinctively. And then, he quickly glanced at Ga-on’s smiling face and smiled faintly, and it was such a happy expression that it was almost embarrassing to watch.
Hyung… is it okay if he gives up like this? He’s smiling like that at a woman? Of course, she is a formidable opponent, but…. Do-gyeom kept agonizing over it while drinking the sujeonggwa that had been served as dessert. If he put this cup down, then it would be time for them to leave. He wanted to stay a little longer but he couldn’t think of any excuse.
The helping hand came at a critical moment.
“Director Cha, what should I do? I forgot that I picked perilla leaves this afternoon. It’ll be ready if I just blanch and season it, can you wait for about twenty minutes?”
“It’s okay. You’ve already given me so much…”
“I just want to give you a little something extra. I heard that you took such good care of the CEO…. Ah! Then why don’t you take a walk with the CEO in the back garden? The hydrangeas are very pretty these days. That’s why the CEO has been taking walks every morning and evening, even though she never did before….”
“Madam Kwon.”
The gazes of the two met briefly again.
“CEO, you’ll be bored if you walk alone. I’m so glad that you started to exercise. Thanks to that, your blood pressure went up a lot as well….”
“Haa, okay, okay, so go and season those perilla leaves now.”
Although they had bought twenty more minutes by a stroke of luck, there was no point in the four of them walking around together. Just as Do-gyeom had been wondering how to drag Hae-su away, Hae-su’s phone, which had been buzzing throughout dinner, rang loudly.
“Ah, why. I can’t go right now. I’m at an important event. And if I go there you guys will make me drink. I’m in training, so I can’t drink…. What? Se-eun is there too? Okay. I’ll go there now. I’ll be there… within thirty minutes. I said I’m going now!”
Hae-su, who had ended the call hurriedly, grabbed Do-gyeom’s arm and whined. Do-gyeom, who hated physical contact, frowned and tried to shake him off, but Hae-su was too desperate.
“Hyung! Please take me to Shinchon, huh?”
“You said they’ll make you drink there. You’re an athlete with a big match coming up…. Ah…! But it’s important to socialize with your friends at your age. Okay, I’ll take you there. Let’s go.”
“Thank you, hyung. CEO! Ji-won hyung! I have to go somewhere suddenly! I’ll come back with a gold medal. Hyung, take care of yourself!”
Hae-su, who was overjoyed, disappeared like the wind as if a storm had swept through the house. And after the storm passed, only silence remained. Although the unexpected situation flustered them both, Ji-won was the one who was quicker to react.
“The hydrangeas are very pretty, just like Madam Kwon said.”
“Ah…, right.”
Unlike the large garden that was decorated with various wildflowers, the back garden that was built on a gentle slope had only hydrangeas planted along a simple stone path. The thick branches of the hydrangeas showed that they had not been planted recently. It meant that it was a flower that the homeowner, who was indifferent about everything, particularly cherished.
“It’s good to see that you started to exercise.”
“It's not that grand…. I just took a walk. It’s true that I sleep much better now.”
“I’m glad to hear that. That's enough for now. You can increase the intensity gradually once you get used to it.”
“Okay.”
Since they were both being cautious, they ran out of topics quickly. It hadn’t been long since they could talk for hours without running out of things to say, but every word felt unnatural as they tried to find safe topics.
“This is the guesthouse that I stay in.”
The short walk, which had been awkward and uncomfortable but strangely enough hadn’t felt like it would end too soon, finally ended when they reached a small and neat guesthouse.
Unhyujae. A place where clouds rest…. Ji-won, who had been looking around the cozy guesthouse, looked at the small pond with clouds reflected in it. It is a beautiful sight…. But I don’t care if the clouds rest or not, I wish the homeowner would rest.
“It’s very nice.”
“Is it?”
“It would look even better when the moon is up.”
“Yes, it’s said that it’s truly a sight to behold during a full moon, but unfortunately, I’ve barely ever been at home during a full moon.”
“…That’s understandable.”
Well, it’s hard to enjoy the moon leisurely when you’re dealing with ghosts. Anyway, it’s nice here. It’s quiet and suits your aura. Ji-won, who had been carefully looking around Ga-on’s quarters one last time, stepped back and bowed his head politely. He thought that it would be nice to sit on the porch and look at the pond with clouds reflected in it, but he couldn’t push his luck since he had promised not to make her uncomfortable.
“Then I’ll be going now. It’s been about twenty minutes, like Madam Kwon had said…. Please get some rest.”
“…Okay.”
Although Ga-on's response seemed slightly regretful, she didn't make eye contact. If Ga-on had shown even a hint of disappointment, he would have probably lied down on the porch without any shame.
The hydrangea path, which had seemed like it was only about fifteen steps when they were walking towards the guesthouse, was surprisingly quite long when he was walking back. Only then did he notice that cute lanterns shaped like Korean paper lanterns were lining the path. He hadn’t even realized that they were lit. He only clearly remembered Ga-on’s side profile as she had been walking beside him.
I’m definitely blinded by love. Just as Ji-won, who had been laughing softly, realized that something was approaching him, he stopped walking. It couldn’t be a human since he hadn’t heard any footsteps, but it wasn’t a ghost either since there was no gloomy energy. Just as he was tensing all the muscles in his body, he heard a voice.
“What’s this, a little brat?”
Brat? Is he talking about me? Ji-won, who had been slightly offended and turned around, furrowed his brows slightly as he saw a large wolf with white fur. A wolf… that talks…. It doesn’t seem to have any malicious intent. Right, you do seem to have lived longer than me. Still, you should be polite when you’re meeting someone for the first time, whether you’re a human or an animal.
“Oh, you’re not even surprised.”
“I’m quite bold.”
“Well, a man who has his eyes on the Jungcheonju should at least be that bold.”
Sorang smirked as he saw Ji-won’s eyes sharpen at the mention of Ga-on. He’s quite spirited, but his eyes are too arrogant for a kid who hasn't even lived for 500 years.
The oxtail stew that Hee-ju had prepared for the guests was one of Sorang’s favorite foods. As he was enjoying the bland oxtail stew that was made to suit his taste in the kitchen, he smelled a familiar yet strange scent through the strong aroma of meat. It was the scent that Ga-on had whenever she came back from her walks recently.
She was fine when she was at the guesthouse, why now all of a sudden…? As Sorang had been piecing together the events with a puzzled expression, his eyes widened suddenly. There was only one variable. Wait a minute…. Is the cause of this in the dining room right now?
- Madam Kwon, who are the guests?
- The high-ranking guides came for a meeting. You’ve met Director Seo Do-gyeom and Hae-su, right? There’s a kind young man named Director Cha Ji-won who takes good care of the CEO these days, and I heard that he got hurt during his business trip, so I invited him to give him something nutritious. It’s such a shame that he lives alone after losing his parents at a young age.
- He’s a man?”
- Of course. He’s a very decent and handsome young man. He makes me feel proud just by looking at him.
Sorang, who had been wandering near the main building after his meal, saw a strange man taking a walk with Ga-on and clicked his tongue with a dumbfounded expression. He had thought that the scent was similar to the smell that comes from a man and woman who are attracted to each other, but he hadn’t imagined that Ga-on’s scent had changed because of that.
Even Ju Ga-on is still a woman. Sorang was greatly shocked by this realization. The two, who had started walking side by side, were not looking at each other, but they were clearly expressing their attraction through their physical reactions. Their breathing, voice, pulse, body temperature…. There was no doubt about it.
Especially the man, he was being very obvious. His gaze, as he was looking down at Ga-on from time to time, was so sweet that it made even those who were watching blush.
- It would look even better when the moon is up.
Wow! Saying that he wants to see the moon together is a classic pick-up line, anywhere and anytime. Of course, there was no way that Ga-on would understand that subtle seduction. Sorang was so frustrated when he heard her nonchalantly replying that she’s busy catching ghosts during a full moon.
Being a human is really inconvenient sometimes. Even though they’re throwing off those vibes so obviously that anyone can tell, they don't know unless you express it with words or expressions.
- Ga-on, do you like that man?
Ga-on, who had been quietly looking up at the sky, shook her head without hesitation at Sorang’s sudden question.
- I shouldn’t.
It seemed like she didn’t know that her response was almost an affirmation. Of course, it was understandable. Ga-on had lived hundreds of times longer as the Jungcheonju compared to her time as a human, and those who were swayed by their emotions couldn't keep that position. Just like practice makes perfect, you need experience and practice to express your true feelings. However, Ga-on didn’t have any opportunity to build up such things.
Still, there’s not much time left. Wouldn't it be nice if she could try something like dating just once in her life? And it would be even better if her partner was someone like him, someone so handsome.
“I didn’t know that CEO Ju was this interested in men.”
“Thank you for the compliment, but I think that’s very disrespectful to the CEO.”
Wouldn’t it have been better if she chose someone with at least some manners? That kid is so rude. He’s not even humble at all. Guys who are too full of themselves tend to neglect their partners. Well, looking at his gaze, he seems like he would give her his heart right now….
“We are close enough to tolerate such disrespect.”
“Close…”
“Why? Are you annoyed?”
Ji-won laughed softly at Sorang’s provocation. Although he had been caught off guard and attacked by someone who had shown up suddenly, Ji-won was not the type to lose easily.
“I might not have much free time but I don’t fight with animals.”
“Hey, brat. You think humans are any different? You reek of a male trying to seduce a female.”
“Reek? Ah, canines have a sensitive sense of smell.”
Rude bastard. Still calling me an animal? Sorang's smooth forehead crumpled in an instant. It was the first time that Sorang, who had been living for almost a thousand years as the right-hand man of the Jungcheonju, had met such a strong opponent.
11, 15, 26, 31, 39, 42. So-hwa, who had been looking at the numbers on her phone, sighed deeply while crumpling the piece of paper with completely different numbers written on it. And then, she threw her phone on the side table.
A message from a familiar number had been blinking at the top of her screen, but she didn't open it since she already knew what it was about. It was probably another notice from the accounting department, asking her to pay the overdue hospital bills. Although she knew that the hospital wasn’t a charity, she felt slightly annoyed at the message that would come every single day, even if it was just a day late.
- Ah, I feel so bad for Min-seo’s mom. Working and taking care of the kid on her own. What kind of work do you do that has such irregular hours? It seems like you mostly go out at night.
She was tired of those nosy people, who disguised their vulgar curiosity as good intentions. Why don’t they just ask her straight up if she works at a bar? Although she often felt like she should just give them the answer they wanted, she couldn’t neglect the relationship with the other caretakers who were sharing the same room. They were the only ones who looked after Min-seo whenever she had to leave.
- I just work whenever there’s something available, and I mostly work at construction sites at night. They pay well. And I can’t leave her side during the day.
- Ah, I see. How can you do such hard work with that small body of yours? The poor mom is having such a hard time. Come here and have a piece of fruit. You need to eat to gain strength.
She could endure anything as long as her child’s condition got better. She could chase terrifying evil spirits, and she could put on a fake smile in front of people that she hated.
But on days like today, when her child suddenly had difficulty breathing and had to be moved to the intensive care unit, she felt the urge to end everything with her child.
She was waiting in front of the intensive care unit without even seeing her child’s face, and she couldn’t even bring herself to cry.
What should we do, Min-seo? Should we just die together? The reality that she couldn’t afford to move her to a better hospital, the reality that she wanted to give up on her child, made her feel especially hurt and frustrated today.
“Help me. Someone please…. Please save my child. I’ll do anything…”
“Anything?”
So-hwa, who had been praying desperately to every supernatural being that she could think of, was startled by the sudden voice and opened her eyes wide. Just a moment ago, the hospital lobby had been completely empty. The front doors had been locked, and the caretakers would not pass by here even when they went to the convenience store.
So-hwa, who had been slowly raising her head with a chilling feeling, widened her eyes when she saw a young woman in strange clothing. A tall woman with a sturdy build was standing in front of her with an indifferent expression, wearing black martial arts attire and holding a rattan whip in one hand.
What is it? Are they filming a historical drama or something? Is there a drama set nearby? She does look like an actor. But…. How did she even get in here? So-hwa, who had been staring at the woman, felt a sense of discomfort and instinctively looked down at the floor. It was one of the ways So-hwa, who wasn’t very sensitive to spiritual energy, distinguished a living person from a ghost, and just like she had expected, the woman had no shadow.
Right. She’s… not a human. But, she’s also not a ghost that I can deal with either. She started to feel a strong energy that even a high-ranking guide might have a hard time sending to Jungcheon. A chilling coldness quickly went down her spine.
“Who… are you?”
“Me? The chief of the Left Police Bureau.1”
The chief of the Left Police Bureau? So-hwa, who had been puzzled at the unfamiliar title, was shocked and prostrated herself on the floor. The chief of the Left Police Bureau was a powerful figure who was the right-hand man of the King of the Underworld, and was second in command in the underworld. As the head of the Left Police Bureau, which mainly went around the mortal realm catching escaped criminals from the netherworld, it was said that no one could withstand the excruciating pain of her whip without losing consciousness. She started to tremble and break out in a cold sweat.
“W, why are you… here?”
“I came to catch an escaped criminal and was led here by the tears of a pitiful soul.”
The chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had been speaking with a pitiful voice as if she was truly sympathetic, knelt on one knee and lifted So-hwa’s chin slightly. So-hwa’s eyes widened at the words of the chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had been trembling without even making eye contact.
“There is a child who hasn't even lived properly.”
“…!”
“She doesn't have a short lifespan though….”
“Really? Can my Min-seo live?”
“It is an age where lifespans can be extended with medicine, so that would be possible if she receives the right treatment.”
The chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had been looking around the shabby hospital, sighed deeply with a pitiful expression. It was a comment that accurately targeted So-hwa’s hopes of her child getting better if she met a skilled doctor.
“What will you do, pitiful mother? It seems like what you need right now is money. If you lend a hand to the King of the Underworld’s secret plan, I will give you wealth that you can never touch by chasing ghosts for your entire life.”
“What… do I have to do?”
The chief of the Left Police Bureau smiled softly while watching So-hwa approach her as if she was possessed. Her voice also became softer.
“All you have to do is break off one of these branches every full moon and put it somewhere where the energy is strong. Be careful not to be seen by humans.”
When the chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had taken out a long branch, handed it to So-hwa, So-hwa, who had taken it without thinking, bit her lip. Although it seemed like a simple task, it felt ominous to place something from the netherworld in the mortal realm, and she was also anxious since she had no idea what the reason for this was.
“What… are you planning to do…?”
“You don’t need to know the King of the Underworld’s agenda. You just have to do your small part and receive your great reward. If you don’t want to do it, then I’ll find someone else.”
“I’ll do it! I will.”
So-hwa grabbed the hem of her clothes desperately as the chief of the Left Police Bureau stood up without hesitation. The chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had smiled widely, set the crumpled piece of paper on fire. The blazing fire disappeared in the blink of an eye, and the piece of paper, which didn’t even have a speck of soot on it, fell in front of So-hwa.
“With this, the contract is complete. You’ve received not money from me, but your child’s life. If you do not keep your promise, I will take back what I have given to you immediately.”
The chief of the Left Police Bureau, who had finished her coldhearted words, disappeared like smoke. So-hwa couldn’t tell whether it was a dream or reality, but the weight of the branch in her hand proved that what just happened was real.
So-hwa’s hands started trembling as she opened the piece of paper just in case. Although the paper was exactly the same as before, down to every wrinkle, the numbers that were written on it had changed completely.
11…, 15…, 26…, 31…, 39…, and 42! So-hwa covered her mouth to keep herself from screaming. She felt like her child had been saved already, and she was covered in goosebumps. It was the first time that she felt such joy in her life.
“A lotus flower on a lotus leaf cushion, drifting away to the Pure Land, if you’re too hungry to go, enjoy this last meal, if you’re too thirsty to go, enjoy this last drink….”
Ji-won, who had been sitting on the bench in the park with his arms crossed, was watching the deceased, who were covering their ears with pained expressions, being dragged to Jungcheon. There were a lot of particularly aggressive ghosts today, so Do-gyeom had been repeating the thirteen-minute song six times already. Although Ji-won had come here determined to do nothing, he still had to draw twelve portraits.
He sighed as he looked up at the bright full moon. Those ghosts who had been making a fuss will now go to Jungcheon and cause trouble there. And the owner of the Cloud Rest House will be out again today.
“Are you done, hyung?”
“Yeah, it seems like this area is mostly taken care of. I don’t feel anything else.”
“Give me some water.”
Do-gyeom, who had sat down on the bench, finished the 500ml bottle of water that Ji-won handed to him in one gulp. And then, he groaned and tilted his head back.
“You worked hard.”
“You too, hyung.”
“…Yeah.”
Do-gyeom, who had been catching his breath for a while, slowly got up. His entire body was stiff as if he had been beaten up since he had been singing for a very long time. Do-gyeom, who had been stretching his neck from side to side while groaning softly, quietly clicked his tongue while looking at Ji-won who was staring at the moon. He didn't have to ask what he was thinking.
“Want to go to Jungcheon?”
“No. I’ve decided not to bother her.”
“So you’re giving up?”
“I’m thinking about it. If my feelings are a burden to her, I think it would be better if I didn’t see her. I don’t want to see her with a sorry expression every time our eyes meet.”
Do-gyeom, who had been feeling slightly somber at Ji-won’s nonchalant words, bowed his head. There’s nothing in this world that goes as planned. What a pitiful life he leads. It’s a waste of his handsome face.
“Do you think you can give up?”
“I can give up if I put my mind to it. Although I don’t think I can stop liking her.”
Ji-won, who had been responding calmly, narrowed his eyes as he saw a familiar silhouette walking quickly in the distance. He felt like she was avoiding him, and strangely enough, her back kept catching his eye.
“Do-gyeom, isn't that Teacher Im?”
“Who?”
“Guide Im So-hwa. The one who is taking care of her daughter who is in a vegetative state….”
“Ah, now that you mention it, it does seem similar…. But, why would she come here at this time?”
Ji-won, who had been staring at the woman’s back as she was disappearing, quickly lost interest after seeing her shoes. She wouldn’t have the money to buy shoes like that when she was struggling to pay the hospital bills.
“I must have been mistaken. Let’s go home. I’m tired.”
Ga-on, who had been in Jungcheon for a full day, was finally able to leave after noon. Although there were still places on the other side of the world where the full moon was up, the frenzy would usually subside after midnight. This full moon was particularly chaotic, but she felt relieved that the monthly event was over.
The security chief, who had been watching Ga-on massage her shoulders with an exhausted expression, asked with a worried voice.
“CEO, you have an appointment with the vice president at 3 PM, should I reschedule it?”
Ah…. That’s right. I couldn’t go home directly because of that. Ga-on, who had been slowly exhaling, shook her head.
According to recent investigations, the amount that the executive director, who was in charge of the entire business department, had embezzled was far beyond their imagination. It was time for her to make a decision.
“No. The vice president is also a busy person, so let’s meet up now.”
“But you were in Jungcheon for too long today…. Shouldn’t you at least get some sleep…?”
“I have to sleep at night. I’m going to go out and have a cup of coffee, so Assistant Manager Kwon, just do your work.”
Hyun-ho’s eyes widened at Ga-on’s unexpected words. A… cup of coffee? Ga-on rarely drank coffee because of Hee-ju, who would make a fuss as if she had been given poison whenever someone offered Ga-on coffee. But there’s no way he could stop her from drinking what she wanted.
“Then please wait in your office, CEO. We have a coffee machine in the secretary office. I’ll make you a cup of warm coffee right away.
Ga-on, who had been frowning at Hyun-ho's suggestion, pressed her temples without saying a word. Usually, she would just agree to avoid any further conversation, but she was feeling slightly irritable today, probably because she was exhausted from lack of sleep. Hyun-ho completely trusted Hee-ju’s beliefs regarding Ga-on's health and he thought that Ga-on would die if she ate or drank anything cold, but Ga-on desperately wanted a cup of iced coffee right now.
“Assistant Manager Kwon.”
“Yes, CEO.”
“My body is stiff, so I’m going to take a walk and get some fresh air. I’m going to walk, have a cup of coffee, and then come back to the office by 2:40 PM, so Assistant Manager Kwon, do your work.”
Hyun-ho, who was greatly shocked, stood there stiffly for a while before bowing his head. It was the first time in over thirty years that he had heard the same order twice in a row. There’s nothing more he could say.
“Yes. I’m sorry, CEO.”
“…”
Even after the elevator doors had closed, Hyun-ho couldn’t leave. Although Hyun-ho was usually not the type to lose his smile, it wasn’t coming back easily.
It was clear that he had upset Ga-on, but he couldn’t understand why. Ga-on was not the type to vent her frustration at her employees when she was not feeling well, and she was also not the type to make unreasonable demands.
What did I even do wrong? I acted the same as I usually do. Hyun-ho, who was bewildered by this unprecedented situation, just stood there blankly until the elevator doors opened again.
Ga-on, who had come outside, started walking. Although the air wasn’t that fresh since they were in the middle of Seoul, she still felt better since she was out in the open. Now, all she needed was a cup of iced coffee. However, Ga-on, who had rarely ever left her usual routine, was faced with a challenge right away.
First, there were too many signs that said “COFFEE”. There were seven cafés that she could see right away. Ga-on, who had been wondering which one she should enter, chose the one that looked the least crowded. Wait, do I even have any money? She broke out in a cold sweat as she felt flustered, but fortunately, she remembered that Hee-ju always put a credit card in her inner pocket just in case.
“One iced Americano, please.”
“What kind of beans would you like?”
It was the second challenge that Ga-on, who had been relieved that she had managed to order calmly, had encountered. When Ga-on didn’t answer right away, the employee, who had been smiling kindly, pointed at the information board next to the cash register.
“We have four different kinds of beans. Please take your time to read the descriptions and make your decision.”
Ga-on turned her head and saw a long list of unfamiliar words that looked like alien language. Since there was nothing else she could do, she started reading them carefully.
Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. Rich floral aroma, abundant fruity flavor, deep acidity of red wine…. It doesn’t seem like it would suit my taste. Hawaiian Kona. Sweet fruity flavor and refreshing acidity? How is abundant fruity flavor different from sweet fruity flavor? As she was deep in thought, she heard the sound of a bell and a refreshing woody scent that she was familiar with stimulated her senses.
Her body froze as her gaze was fixed on the information board. Ga-on, who had been blinking, slowly turned her head when she felt someone stand next to her. The owner of the familiar scent was, as expected, Ji-won. She felt strange. She didn't know if she was happy or uncomfortable.
“Director Cha…”
“Were you choosing the beans?”
“Yes.”
Ji-won, who had been staring at Ga-on’s flustered gaze, glanced at the information board and ordered without hesitation.
“One iced Colombia Supremo with half a shot, please. And one hot Ethiopia Yirgacheffe with an extra shot.”
“Yes. Your order has been placed. Please wait a moment.”
A little while later, the two came out with their coffees. When Ga-on sighed softly after taking a sip, Ji-won raised his eyebrows.
“Doesn’t it suit your taste?”
“It’s good.”
“Then why did you sigh?”
“It’s just pathetic that I can’t even choose a cup of coffee for myself.”
Ji-won, who had been walking next to her, frowned slightly and stood in front of Ga-on, making eye contact with her. And then, he spoke with a trustworthy voice.
“You’re someone who deals with much bigger issues, CEO. You can just leave these kinds of things to other people. Everyone has different things that they can do and things that they have to do. Don't worry yourself with such trivial matters. You’re already carrying so much on your shoulders.”
Ga-on’s eyes wavered slightly. Although it was something that she had heard many times, she felt strangely reassured when she heard those words coming from Ji-won. Ga-on quickly turned her head away since she felt like all sorts of things might come out of her mouth if she kept looking into Ji-won’s eyes.
“But… how did you get here?”
“I went to the headquarters to look over a document, and the security chief told me that you had come out to buy coffee, almost in tears.”
- She didn’t seem to be in a good mood today…. And she went out alone…. I don’t even know if she took her card with her. I just let her go since I thought that she would be upset if I followed her….
- I’ll go check on her.
He was worried about the security chief, who had always had a smile on his face but was looking distraught, but more than that, he was concerned about Ga-on. He had been trying to avoid her as he was still thinking about giving up, but he couldn’t help but follow her as he imagined Ga-on struggling in front of the cash register.
“I thought that you would be uncomfortable in crowded places, so I looked for cafés that were not brand name coffee shops but that were expensive. That was the second one.”
“…!”
Ji-won, whose heart had been struck heavily by something without even a chance to prepare himself, escorted Ga-on back to the headquarters and left after saying goodbye curtly. Her eyes, which had been fixed on his back, couldn’t be taken off easily.
- I won’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable.
It’s not Director Cha but me who is making you uncomfortable. Ga-on, who had finally managed to take her gaze off after a long time, sighed several times. But she still felt frustrated.
“Why aren’t you sleeping?”
Ga-on, who had been looking at the slightly distorted moon while sitting on the porch, smiled faintly as she saw a familiar face.
“Sorang…”
“What’s bothering you?”
“Bothering me? No. It’s not bothering me, just thinking.”
“Thinking about what?”
“I was just thinking that I can’t do anything on my own. That I have lived for a thousand years in vain.”
Sorang, who had been listening carefully to her complaints that she only ever told him, laughed softly as if she was worried about something trivial.
“And here I thought that you were thinking about that guy with the sharp gaze.”
“Sharp gaze?”
Ga-on’s eyes widened. Sorang was in disbelief at the expression that showed that she didn’t have a clue.
“He came to have dinner last weekend. He took a walk with you as well.”
“Director Cha? Director Cha’s gaze is not sharp. He’s a kind and gentle person. I have never even seen him frown.”
Sorang’s lips twitched. Kind and gentle are not the words that you should use to describe someone like that. Right, it’s always the ones who have never dated that fall for a player like him. It's like a universal truth.
“Anyway, that guy definitely likes you. And you like him as well, right? Why don’t you go out with him if you like each other?”
“I don't know how to do that.”
“Why not? You have feelings as well.”
Ga-on, who had been speechless for a moment at Sorang’s question, shook her head.
“I can’t do that. I’m someone who has to be fair to everyone.”
“You just have to be fair to the dead since you’re the Jungcheonju. Why are you applying that standard to humans? Is there a rule that the Jungcheonju can’t date men?”
“…”
Sorang, who had been looking at Ga-on with a sorry expression, asked with a serious voice.
“So, how do you feel? What do you want to do with that man?”
The deceased who had been waiting their turn, intimidated by the magnificent Law Palace, started whispering as they witnessed a surprising sight. There was a child amongst the newly arrived deceased. Although those over ten had to be judged in Jungcheon, it was rare for a minor to commit a sin worthy of being sent to the netherworld. However, the small child who had just entered the Law Palace, surrounded by other deceased, seemed to be about six or seven years old.
No, how did a little kid like that come here? Aren’t the ones under ten supposed to be reincarnated right away? Moo-yeong, who had been receiving the gazes of the other deceased ever since he was in Jungcheon, tried not to be intimidated as he calmly thought about the last words that had been spoken to him in the mortal realm.
- When you go to the underworld, you’ll see scary-looking men in black clothes. You have to beg for their forgiveness no matter what. Tell them that you didn’t know, that you won’t do it again, that you’re sorry. Okay?
Although he felt slightly resentful of the person who had sent him to such a scary place, clever Moo-yeong knew that he had given him that advice with good intentions. Finally, it was his turn.
“Tae Moo-yeong, one count of murder…”
Murder? That little kid? As the child's charges were listed, the quiet Law Palace started to buzz. It was such a big commotion that even the judges, who were usually so solemn, were flustered.
“Silence! What’s with all this commotion?!”
When the grumpy old man with white hair raised his voice, the Law Palace became quiet again. And Moo-yeong, who had been waiting for his opportunity, realized that this was his last chance. He clasped his hands together to look as polite as possible.
“I’m really sorry. I was just scared of being sent away from my mom, so I wanted to stay there. I was so lonely for several years since no one could see or hear me, so I was just playing a prank when I finally met someone who could see me…. I didn’t intend to kill him. Really.”
“Enough. The criminal should keep their mouth shut…”
“But, I’m really sorry. I’ll be a good person when I’m reborn. Please forgive me just this once. Please, I beg you.”
Tears welled up in his eyes as he was speaking. The judge, who looked like he wouldn't even bleed if he was stabbed, had a slightly pitiful expression when he heard Moo-yeong’s story. Moo-yeong’s heart, whose breath he had been holding because of nervousness, started to feel slightly at ease. He was still scared, but he felt that things might go in his favor.
“Tae Moo-yeong, for the one count of murder and sixteen counts of assault…”
The judge, who had been about to give his sentence, hesitated and was deep in thought. In the netherworld, they usually gave a ten-year sentence for each crime unless there were special circumstances. Of course, the type of hell varied depending on the crime. Some had to do light work, and some had to be torn apart every single day. Those who committed serious crimes, such as murder, had to be punished with excruciating pain.
However, was it right to make a seven-year-old child serve a 170-year sentence? Even the judge, who had always worked by the book, couldn’t bring himself to do that.
“You are sentenced to 17 years. You will spend your sentence cleaning the Law Palace, and this is an unprecedentedly lenient punishment considering that the deceased was only a child when he passed away.”
“Thank you, thank you.”
“Also, this is a special measure since you are clearly reflecting on your actions, so if you commit another crime and come back to the netherworld after being reincarnated, you will be sentenced to double the sentence.”
“Yes, I understand.”
Just as Moo-yeong, who had been terrified by all the rumors about hell, had been feeling relieved, he felt a chilling wind and a woman with cold features, who was dressed in black from head to toe, walked by. It seemed like she was a very high-ranking official since all the judges were bowing their heads to her.
Huh? It's the lady who told me that I could do whatever I wanted! Moo-yeong, who had recognized the woman’s face, quickly bowed his head. It was a very quick and wise move for a child who had overcome a life-threatening crisis.
1. The term "좌포청장" (Jwapocheongjang) refers to the head of the Jwapocheong, or the Left Police Bureau, during Korea's Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). It is not a part of Korean mythology, and the author likely included it here to add to the world building.↩
