Returning - Chapter 115
Chapter 115: Danger
After work, Zhao Yu drove straight to the hospital. Sure enough, she saw Xue Zhan's car following her and staying behind her the whole way.
She pretended not to notice, kept driving, and once at the hospital parking lot, she remained in her car, waiting for Xue Zhan to come in.
Xue Zhan apparently wasn't trying to be sneaky either; he had followed closely the whole way, and now he even had the driver park right next to her.
Zhao Yu got out of the car, first glaring at him aggressively, then biting her lip with a bitter smile as she pulled up a photo on her phone and handed it to him. "I tested with a pregnancy test stick several times. Not pregnant. Director Xue can rest assured."
Seeing him get out too, Zhao Yu grew even angrier. "I already said I'm not pregnant. I'm just here to see a friend. Do you have to follow me all the way to the hospital? Do you need to watch me get examined yourself to be satisfied? You think I'd secretly give birth then go to your Xue family demanding money and recognition? Fine, come up with me now, I'll let you see for yourself..."
"Why see a psychologist?"
Zhao Yu froze, her face full of panic.
He asked again, "Why see a psychologist?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Zhao Yu turned to get back into her car, but he grabbed her wrist. "I already saw it before you emptied the trash can."
Zhao Yu gritted her teeth and flashed a grin. "What business is that of Director Xue's?"
Xue Zhan didn't answer, pulling her by the wrist toward the elevator.
"Let go!" Zhao Yu struggled fiercely, yanking her hand free and shoving him away entirely.
His right arm was still bandaged and immobilized; such a violent motion seemed to have pulled at the wound, causing him to hiss sharply in pain.
Zhao Yu blanked for a moment, then quickly stepped forward to carefully take his arm. "Are you okay? I... I didn't mean to, I..."
Seeing large tears fall onto the bandage, he couldn't help but raise his left hand to wipe them away. "I'll go with you."
Zhao Yu was already extremely emotional; hearing those words made her break down completely. "What exactly do you want? Even if I'm seeing a psychologist, what business is it of yours? I have no privacy left in front of you. You already know my most unbearable, most embarrassing past. What else do you want to know? Do you have to dissect this last bit and lay it all out before you to be satisfied? I never intended to cling to you or to Xue Zi'ang. I was already planning to resign..."
Xue Zhan pulled her into his arms. "I have no privacy left in front of you either. You also know my most unbearable, most embarrassing past."
Zhao Yu bit her lip, trembling and sobbing, saying nothing.
Xue Zhan patted her shoulder. "I was just worried and wanted to come see."
Zhao Yu still didn't speak, just leaned against him suppressing her sobs with all her might, but in the end she couldn't hold back. She buried herself in his arms and wailed loudly, as if releasing all the emotions she'd been suppressing all these days.
She had already booked an appointment with the psychologist earlier, and naturally still had to go after crying. Xue Zhan did accompany her, but only waited in the waiting area and didn't go in with her.
She didn't dare go to the psychologist Ji Sui had recommended before. The current one she'd only seen twice. Although she trusted the doctor's professional ethics to not casually disclose her privacy, to be on the safe side, she once again put on a full act before the doctor with genuine feelings.
When she came out, she found Xue Zhan wasn't outside, but he'd left a message on WeChat saying he'd gone to have his wound treated.
When Zhao Yu found him, she learned that because of her push, Xue Zhan's wound had indeed partially reopened.
Only then did she see how terrifying his wound was: a long cut stitched with over a dozen stitches. The nurse said it was somewhat inflamed, and if he didn't take good care of it, the stitching might be in vain.
Seeing her guilty and heartbroken expression, Xue Zhan instead smiled. "It doesn't hurt."
Zhao Yu's eyes reddened, holding back tears that threatened to spill. She turned her head away, not daring to look at his arm, and not wanting him to see her like this.
Seeing her so awkward, Xue Zhan's smile grew even wider. He reached out his left hand and slowly held hers.
After leaving the hospital, fearing her emotional instability would make driving dangerous, Xue Zhan asked her to go with him.
She asked, "How did you get hurt this badly?"
Xue Zhan chuckled. "Getting hurt this badly was still him showing mercy."
Zhao Yu was silent for a long while before saying, "It's not your fault."
"I can also tell you that it wasn't your fault, that you didn't do it intentionally. But can you stop blaming yourself for what happened four years ago?"
Zhao Yu fell silent again.
But having Xue Zhan beside her, able to talk about these things, was enough to comfort her. At least she could be certain she was somewhat special in his heart.
Xue Zhan's phone rang. She continued staring quietly out the window, also secretly listening carefully to the call, but it was too noisy on the other end and the voices weren't clear.
Hearing him say "I'll be there right away" and then instruct the driver in a deep voice to head to some club, Zhao Yu asked, "What's wrong?"
"Xue Zi'ang got drunk and got into a conflict with someone."
He only said it briefly, but Zhao Yu could tell he was very worried about Xue Zi'ang.
When they arrived, the driver went to park, while Zhao Yu followed Xue Zhan inside through the main entrance, heading straight to the private room where Xue Zi'ang was.
The argument inside had already been stopped by the manager and staff, but both groups were people not to be trifled with, and with alcohol fueling their tempers, neither was willing to back down, leaving the staff helpless.
Zhao Yu had met some of Xue Zi'ang's friends on Christmas Eve. She remembered one named Nian Feng, but now Nian Feng's handsome face was already bruised. Of course, the group on the other side was even more injured.
Seeing Xue Zi'ang unscathed, Xue Zhan finally relaxed. He turned to the manager calmly. "What happened?"
Before the manager could answer, Nian Feng jumped in. "Uncle, it's not our fault. That bastard started it, insulting Xue Zi'ang... saying he had a father who gave birth to him but no father to raise him."
Nian Feng said that last part very quietly, but both Xue Zhan and Zhao Yu still heard it.
Xue Zhan clenched his fist, his gaze falling on Xue Zi'ang again. But Xue Zi'ang didn't look at him, only staring directly at Zhao Yu.
Meeting Xue Zi'ang's eyes, seeing his reddened eyes, Zhao Yu felt something in her heart get struck hard, and guilt welled up inside her. But in the end, she just looked away nonchalantly.
Xue Zhan glanced at Nian Feng and the others and said calmly, "Come on, go back with me."
Xue Zi'ang didn't move. As Xue Zhan turned, he was blocked by the other group. The one in charge, with a black eye, glared angrily at Xue Zhan. "What? Beat up my brother and now just walk away?"
Xue Zhan didn't even give him a glance. He just smiled at the manager nearby. "You only notified me to pick someone up? Didn't notify the Sun family? Perfect, I haven't seen President Sun in a while. We can catch up."
Seeing him take out his phone to make a call, the young man immediately panicked. "You dare call my uncle?"
Xue Zhan tilted his head, smiling innocently.
The man gritted his teeth, waved his hand, and led his people out with curses.
Xue Zi'ang was still sitting motionless. Nian Feng and the others couldn't pull him away no matter what. Xue Zhan said helplessly, "You all go back first. I'll talk to him."
The youngsters all regarded Xue Zhan as an elder and dared not disobey. They immediately grabbed their things and left. Zhao Yu also silently left the private room with the group.
Nian Feng and the others said a quick goodbye to her and left. The manager, seeing she was waiting for someone, led her to the lounge on this floor and had her rest on the sofa.
After waiting for about ten minutes and still not seeing them come out, Zhao Yu was about to get up to go to the restroom when a male voice suddenly came from behind her. "Isn't that... my new sister-in-law? What are you doing here alone? Is my brother here too?"
Zhao Yu turned around and saw a face somewhat similar to Xu Chengyan's. She remembered this was Xu Chengyan's cousin, named Xu Chenghe.
