LWGP - Chapter 67
Chapter 67: The Descent
Wang Jiu listened from the side, summarizing the fellow's words.
Organization Name: Divine Temple
Organization Leader: Unknown.
Organization Members: Countless and highly secretive. Many departments are unaware of the existence of others. Miao Mountain is just one of the smallest branches. Currently, the number of experts like them in this organization is definitely in the double digits, perhaps even far higher. They seem to have seized the initiative in many areas, intentionally collecting items like Garden Fields and seeds, and effectively organizing members to run dungeons. Their power is expanding at a formidable rate.
Organization Activities: Human trafficking, assassination, organ trafficking, smuggling, drug dealing—they do anything and everything evil.
Organization's Lair: Unknown. It remains unpredictable due to the secretive and fluid movements of its powerful members.
Organization's Contact Method: Secret Divine Temple symbols and text, with contact made through overseas websites.
These were the specifics; the fellow knew nothing else.
Xie Lu got the website address and wanted to investigate further, but Wang Jiu wasn't optimistic. "With so little time, what can you possibly find out?" she asked faintly.
Xie Lu replied, "We have experts who should be able to dig up some information. We can't just do nothing."
Wang Jiu frowned, looking at the Broken-Legged Man with some disdain. "So they're just small fry, with no useful information."
Damn it, still humiliating me at a time like this.
The Broken-Legged Man said, "We're already elites, especially him. Because he performed well in dungeons and obtained that bow, the organization values him highly. Otherwise, he would have been punished long ago for failing to assassinate you."
The moment he finished speaking, Wang Jiu suddenly grabbed his chin and poured half a vial of potion down his throat. The man's body twisted and convulsed twice, and then he was dead.
Xie Lu was shocked. "What are you doing?"
His shock stemmed from two points.
1. Her potion was actually effective.
2. Other people announce their intention to kill before acting; she just knocked the man out cold without a word.
Wang Jiu said calmly, "Praising the man who tried to assassinate me while indirectly belittling me. So arrogant, utterly without manners. If I didn't react, wouldn't I lose face? Besides, the interrogation was over. He had no more value."
Killing a prisoner so decisively, without dragging things out. What a terrifying little widow.
But Xie Lu wasn't easily fooled. He directly pointed out her sinister intentions. "You're kill-stealing."
He was somewhat wary of her. Before he had come to lie in wait for the two assassins tonight, he hadn't thought she was a match for them. Yet, she had quickly seized their weakness and counter-attacked. Perhaps she had even engineered that weakness. For instance, he had seen it clearly from the shadows—the ranged archer couldn't lock onto her position from a distance and had to move closer, just outside the courtyard. This gave her the opening for a short, explosive, close-range assault.
It was clearly premeditated.
She had not only anticipated their arrival but had also anticipated that he would be lying in wait nearby.
"What are you talking about? You're the one who PK'd him. Am I that shameless? I won't touch a single one of his things. I only want this."
Wang Jiu took a backpack from the loot the man had dropped and then initiated a trade with Xie Lu.
"You can always refuse, if you truly look down on a greedy, treacherous, and shameless person like me."
She was calm and composed, showing no weakness.
Xie Lu glanced at her, clicked confirm, then noted Wang Jiu's subtle expression. "What? I confirmed it. You're not happy? Were you trying to provoke me into refusing the items?"
Though Xie Lu was young, he was experienced and had undertaken countless missions. He thought to himself that this woman was deep and full of schemes; he absolutely wouldn't fall for her tricks.
Wang Jiu smiled without a word and traded all the dropped items to him, keeping none for herself.
When confirming the trade, Xie Lu didn't look closely before clicking accept. It was only when he was checking the items in his inventory that he suddenly saw Wang Jiu approach.
A faint, fresh scent of soap wafted over him.
He jumped, taking a step back until his body was pressed against the door, his handsome, fair face tinged with anger.
"What are you doing!"
"Opening the door, little brother. Unless you want to stay in here with me for a long, long time?"
Wang Jiu's hand reached around his body, grasped the doorknob, and opened the laboratory door. Her expression wasn't flirtatious at all; it was perfectly proper, her eyes calm. She slowly added another sentence.
"Do you see me as a woman now?"
His thoughts exposed, Xie Lu felt a little uncomfortable. "Sorry." He quickly slipped out, only to bump into Wang Shu, who was coming upstairs to find them.
"That was fast?" Wang Shu blurted out. Xie Lu's face immediately darkened, but he quickly realized he had misunderstood Wang Shu's words.
"Master, it's a good thing you finished the interrogation so quickly! Time's almost up, it's 11 o'clock in fifteen minutes. Hey, Sir Xie, you're leaving? Don't you want to stay? Man, what a temper."
After Xie Lu hurried off, Wang Shu complained to Wang Jiu. She remained noncommittal, simply going to the study to pack the remaining three flint boxes into two backpacks. With space to spare, she added a pair of leather boots.
So worrying. I feel like I'll never have enough clothes and shoes in the future.
Then she put all three backpacks into her character inventory, only to find she didn't have enough space.
Crap. She had just gotten a batch of supplies from the archer. Not all of a player's assets dropped upon death—some were reclaimed by the system—but what did drop was usually good. Because the archer had attacked first, the system had automatically flagged him with a red name, causing five pieces of his equipment to drop. All of it was bronze-grade.
A weapon, a piece of clothing, two bracers, and a belt.
The stats on the other bronze items were typical for their grade, but the weapon was powerful. Wang Jiu had been coveting it, and now that it was in her hands, her eyes shone even brighter.
Darknight Bow (Bronze Weapon, Level 5, comes with 100 arrows, 10 remaining)
Attributes: Strength +12, Agility +10
"He shot so many arrows and only has ten left. Did he usually shoot birds for fun?"
Wang Jiu had been happy to finally get a ranged weapon, but she was disgusted to find so few arrows left. A search of the system revealed that quivers were for sale, one hundred arrows per quiver, but they were listed for two silver coins.
So expensive.
Why didn't the guy drop any silver coins!
Having already spent all her money, Wang Jiu grumbled to herself. She equipped one of the bracers and the belt, then listed the clothing and the extra bracer at a high price.
The bracer for 20 silver coins, the clothing for 40.
Then she listed the grey-grade gear she had just unequipped.
She priced the bracer to sell quickly because she needed the money now. The clothing was priced high, intended to be sold after the full game launch.
The moment she listed it, the bracer was bought instantly.
With 20 silver coins in her account, Wang Jiu bought ten quivers from the market, for a total of 1,000 arrows.
If she'd had more money, she would have bought out the entire stock.
"Everything costs money. This bow is a real money sink. Maybe the archer was broke because of it, which is why he didn't drop any cash."
However…
Wang Jiu toyed with another item that had dropped besides the equipment.
It didn't matter that there was no money. A single Mystic Realm Fragment was more than enough to satisfy her.
After organizing her inventory, Wang Jiu successfully placed the three backpacks inside and then checked the time.
Three minutes remaining.
Wang Jiu went downstairs and saw Wang Shu hugging a pot.
"What are you doing?"
"It's the leftover dough drops. I want to see if they're still edible after the launch."
Wang Shu was still thinking about the dough drops that Wang Jiu had knocked over after he'd only eaten a few bites.
"Then bring the pot outside. Don't stay in the house."
"Why?"
"Better to be safe than sorry."
Wang Jiu led Wang Shu out of the courtyard and onto the road. They discovered they weren't the only ones outside; many families in the high-end residential area had brought their entire households out of their homes.
Surprised, Wang Shu put the pot down, squatted, and checked his phone. "Master, it looks like the government issued a notice telling everyone to stay outside if possible."
They had been too busy dealing with the two assassins to pay attention to the news.
Two minutes left.
"Master, did you set a trap for them tonight? Including deliberately using those dim, warm lights in the dining room? You're amazing!"
"Yes, and I deliberately had you sit across from me to act as my shield."
"..."
You're no fun like this, Master.
Wang Shu squatted by the roadside, guarding his pot and observing the other residents.
Generally speaking, the people in this neighborhood were either rich or noble, with net worths of at least a hundred million. Their information channels were excellent, and they all seemed to be prepared.
By now, quite a few people had died because of the game, but the situation wasn't too severe—at least, it was a far cry from a movie like Resident Evil.
Most people probably weren't that nervous. Instead, they were curious about what the full game launch would look like. Would it…
Ding.
The system suddenly sent a notification: "Launch countdown: 30 seconds. Commencing countdown. 30, 29, 28… 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Launching."
For a moment, everyone paused at the cold notification. Then… a tremor. They felt the great earth shake!
The ground shifted, concrete cracked, and soil burst forth. Plants sprouted, grew, and climbed up buildings, piercing and shattering them. One villa after another was torn apart or simply corroded, turning to dust…
All the buildings of modern civilization began to crumble, and all its artifacts began to decay.
"Ah!"
Wang Shu watched as the pot of dough drops before him rotted away, quickly turning to dust.
And then… the world changed drastically, entering a stage of destruction at a terrifying speed.
In no more than ten seconds, Wang Jiu saw her manor turn to ruins, and everyone else's was no exception. When she turned her head, she saw the towering skyscrapers of the vast city collapse one after another, dissolving into smoke. A rare few became plant-choked ruins, but most simply turned to dust and vanished.
More terrifying still, the very terrain began to transform.
The first step of urbanization had been to level the land; now, it began to revert to its original form.
Slopes, hills, fissures, rivers, lakes.
"This isn't destruction," Wang Jiu murmured. "I'm afraid it's… a revival."
She saw the entire world begin to fall into darkness.
Electricity vanished, light bulbs vanished. The only light came from the starry night sky.
But fortunately, the starry sky this night was far brighter than it had ever been over the nation's capital.
Because a new world was about to descend.
Just when they thought the launch effects had peaked, with many people already braced for the destruction of civilization and the loss of everything…
The system popped up a prompt: "The descent process will now begin. Player ID 564344744, which region would you like to descend into?"
What the hell?
Did it think this was a parachute drop in a battle royale?
Before Wang Jiu could react, a huge map popped up before her eyes.
It was a three-dimensional global map in touchscreen mode. She could rotate the entire globe with a swipe of her finger, pinching to zoom in and out. The entire planet had been divided into nine major regions, with no regard for national borders; it had been carved up like a simple sphere.
Wang Jiu glanced at it, then looked away from the screen to say a single word to the equally shocked Wang Shu: "Luoyang."
Wang Shu: "???"
Before he could react, Wang Jiu had already returned to the map, swiped to zoom in, and quickly selected a location.
Luoyang.
"Selection complete. Commencing teleportation. Please maintain an elegant posture for your descent. We wish you a pleasant game. Goodbye."
"3, 2, 1."
Vwoom. Wang Jiu vanished.
Wang Shu was dumbfounded. He dropped to his knees and wailed as if at a funeral. "Fuck! Master, I got an 18 on my geography test! Where is it? I can't find it! Aaaah!"
His phone was gone, so he couldn't use Baidu. He was about to tear his hair out!
Suddenly, he heard a pig oinking mockingly. "First time I've heard a human squeal more like a pig being slaughtered than I do."
Stunned, Wang Shu looked up to see a sow in a small suit of pink leather armor trotting past, having just mocked him.
But as conspicuous as the sow was, her owner was even more so.
A goddess?
Wang Shu froze for a second, then quickly grabbed the sow's trotter, as if holding it hostage. "Miss, do you know where Luoyang is? Please, you have to tell me!"
The sow: "..."
"Luoyang?"
The woman's eyes shimmered, a flicker of interest in their depths.
"So, I hadn't decided where to go yet…"
She opened her own interface and selected Luoyang.
The sow watched her, then also selected Luoyang. It glanced back at Wang Shu and said with contempt, "Illiterate!"
The woman and the sow vanished.
Wang Shu: "???"
You just left?
Luckily, his eyesight was sharp, and he had seen where the sow had just tapped!
Wang Shu immediately selected the same location.
He couldn't let his master, that golden ticket, get away!
