LWGP - Chapter 66
Chapter 66: Counter-Kill
The Archer nodded. "There really are a lot of experts here in the capital. I ran into Xie Jiang and Xie Lu today, otherwise I would have already taken down the target."
Thinking of the failed mission, much of his joy from clearing the dungeon faded.
"It's fine. That woman isn't the top priority anyway. The higher-ups just said it would be best to eliminate her. After all, her weakness is obvious—she's smart and capable, but she has no power base. Now, because of that old woman Lin Zi, she's also on bad terms with the government. Lacking any backing, it's hard for her to accomplish anything on her own. The most troublesome ones right now are people like Xie Jiang and Xie Lu. I didn't expect the government to act so quickly, even though their intel is a step behind ours. Also, the organization requires us to hand over items like Garden Fields and seeds for a lot of contribution points. I've run five dungeons and haven't gotten my hands on any yet. But just now, I saw some idiot list one on the system for 10 silver coins. It was too expensive. I was just considering whether to buy it when someone else snatched it up. Dammit!"
People like them only had ten or twenty silver coins on hand, and that was the combined wealth from pooling the manpower of the capital's circle to run several dungeons. Naturally, they were reluctant to spend it recklessly. As for equipment, they barely had enough for themselves, so how could they bear to sell it? The organization wouldn't allow it either.
The Archer pondered for a moment, then said, "Back then, something went wrong at Miao Mountain, and the plan failed. If this Wang Jiu hadn't exposed herself, we still wouldn't know the truth of what happened. If the game hadn't progressed so quickly and the higher-ups didn't have other priorities, they would have sent us to capture her alive long ago, instead of just killing her now… Forget it. There should be other chances in the future."
What kind of chances?
On the deserted streets, their car moved without obstruction. The two had, of course, received the system notification, but they weren't worried. They had an hour.
Now, they were approaching a certain place.
Slap. Wang Jiu placed her backpack on the sofa and gave Wang Shu a box of Flint Sticks, telling him to pack it.
Wang Shu was actually very smart and understood immediately without needing an explanation from Wang Jiu. He had been struggling with what to pack anyway. His backpack was still empty, and after stuffing the box of flint inside, his dilemma was solved. There was only room left for clothes.
"Master is still the smartest. This is definitely good stuff. It's a shame I can only fit one box. I'm tempted to take out my clothes… What do you think about me not bringing any clothes?"
Wang Jiu didn't answer, asking instead, "Do you think backpacks can be stolen? If you steal one, can you use it?"
This was an extremely dangerous and wicked idea.
The System provided a reminder: "No. Every backpack is bound to its owner. Even if you steal one, you cannot use it."
Fine.
Wang Jiu pressed her brow, walked to the dining room, casually dimmed the lights, and sat down to eat the slightly cooled dough drop soup.
She had to admit, Fatty's cooking wasn't bad.
Hearing Wang Jiu say the dough drop soup was a bit cold, Wang Shu stopped fussing. He moved quickly, finished packing his bag, and sat down to eat.
"Master, if this backpack has a seven-day usage period, does that mean the things we bring inside also have a time limit?"
"Does a time limit even matter? Do you think your clothes will last long after you've been in a fight?"
Holy shit! That was true!
The thought of potentially ending up butt-naked made Wang Shu lose his appetite for the dough drop soup.
"If I'd known, I would have packed my leather clothes…"
Wang Shu muttered to himself as he ate. Wang Jiu, on the other hand, suddenly frowned slightly after eating half her meal. She twirled the spoon in her hand and asked the System a question.
Wang Jiu: "If it follows the normal rules of loot drops from killing a player in combat, does it count as spoils of war? If it's spoils of war, the binding can be changed, right?"
System: "That is possible."
Wang Jiu smiled, then suddenly flipped the table. The moment the table went up, a bowl of dough drop soup flew toward Wang Shu's large face.
"Ah!"
As Wang Shu cried out in alarm, Wang Jiu had already thrown the table directly at the French window.
Bang!! A loud crash.
The instant the table collided with the glass, a streak of light pierced through both the glass and the tabletop, heading straight for the spot between Wang Jiu's eyebrows.
But by then, Wang Jiu had already sidestepped, letting it embed itself in the wall. She raised a hand to catch the tablecloth sliding off the tabletop, yanked it free, and with a push of her foot, shot out through the large hole in the French window. Leaping up, she flung the tablecloth out.
Whoosh!
The wide tablecloth unfurled, creating the illusion that someone was behind it. Illuminated by the yard's night light, the Archer outside was momentarily unable to pinpoint Wang Jiu's location. But then, his hearing suddenly picked up an anomaly. There!
From outside the yard, he aimed his bow at the large persimmon tree, but he was a step too slow. Wang Jiu, in the tree, suddenly threw something.
A hidden weapon? He had no choice but to dodge backward.
Clink!
The object hit the ground and shattered easily.
It was just a ceramic spoon.
The Archer realized his mistake and immediately re-aimed, only to find that Wang Jiu was no longer in the tree. She had already landed and was charging toward him, her Tang knife drawn.
Luckily, she didn't have the Charge skill, or he would have been taken out in that one close-quarters move.
A bow had the advantage of ranged attacks, but it also had a fatal weakness—it needed to be drawn and nocked. This slight time delay, especially after Wang Jiu deliberately threw the ceramic spoon to make him interrupt his shot, meant he had to spend time aiming and shooting all over again.
And in that time… Wang Jiu had closed the distance!
The Tang knife was ferocious, slashing toward him in an instant. Firing an arrow at this range would be foolish. The Archer had to retreat, trying to create distance, but Wang Jiu's strength had improved so much it completely exceeded his estimations.
Even though his attributes were slightly higher than hers… he was an archer who had let a melee agility expert get into close range. This was the greatest crisis.
And up close, Wang Jiu unleashed the terrifying advantage of her 50 Stamina—explosive power!
She had discovered during her tests in the gym that Stamina, this third attribute that people often overlooked, actually had more subtle and powerful intrinsic benefits than the first two.
Recovery, resilience, and explosive power!
It was like how a strong, healthy person's bursts of power and frequency were clearly far greater than a weakling's.
Giving the Archer no time, she closed in and slashed instantly. The Archer didn't dare turn his back on her, so he could only turn around and pull out a shield with his other hand to block.
A grey-grade shield.
Bang!! The shield cracked.
The Archer's arm throbbed with intense pain, making a cracking sound. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, but he used the momentum to retreat.
Wang Jiu noticed. His Stamina was, as expected, lower than hers.
He had probably stacked his attribute points in Strength and Agility, which was the focus for an archer.
But if he was caught in close combat, this became his greatest weakness.
However, a strange green light began to suffuse the Archer's body.
A skill!
What skill? A Heal!
Because for an archer, injuring one arm was no different from being crippled, he had to heal.
This person actually had a healing skill, but…
This healing skill didn't seem to be instant-cast; it probably required a channeling time.
The Archer thought to himself that if he just had five seconds, only five seconds, he could recover!
But… she was coming!
Damn it, after one burst of speed, this woman could actually burst again. Her speed was terrifying. In the blink of an eye, she was on him once more.
Fuck, what a useless skill! Five seconds? In five fucking seconds, it would be all over!
He really couldn't create any distance!
The Archer had no choice but to interrupt his healing skill. Forcing himself to endure the excruciating pain in his arm, he gritted his teeth, raised his bow to aim, and shouted, "Do it!"
He cursed inwardly. His partner should have made a move the moment he was engaged in close combat, but he hadn't. Was it poor judgment? No, he was definitely waiting for this woman to kill him so he could reap the rewards!
He was just coveting his bow!
Once he got out of this, he would make that bastard wish he were dead!
No more dodging. Victory and defeat, life and death, it all came down to this one move.
Vwmm!!
The moment the arrow was loosed, blood spurted from the Archer's injured arm. Wang Jiu was only three meters away from him. And behind her, from behind a large tree by the road, a figure emerged, launching a surprise attack from Wang Jiu's back…
It was a fleeting dance of light and shadow.
The Archer watched as the arrow he had fired flew past Wang Jiu's head… grazing her cheek.
His pupils trembled in shock. He raised his bow to block.
But the blade was a feint. It swiftly avoided the fatal spots he was blocking—his heart and head—and instead, with a smooth twist of her wrist, delivered a sharp, fluid slash to his waist!
The terrifying effect of her Weapon Mastery became more astonishing as she grew stronger.
In agony, as the Archer felt his upper body fall and his line of sight lower, his partner who had ambushed Wang Jiu from behind also let out a bloodcurdling scream.
It was a sword strike from a sudden charge out of the darkness. Once upon a time, a single charge and strike from him had taken out nearly 5% of a berserk Blade Minion BOSS's health.
That was already terrifying damage.
And now, with a surprise assassination attack, he had heavily wounded his opponent with a single strike. It wasn't a kill, because he needed to keep him alive. He had only severed one of the man's legs.
The light from the roadside lamp was somewhat warm. Xie Lu stepped out of the shadows, severed the man's hamstrings, bound his limbs, and collected some items from him before looking over at Wang Jiu.
Wang Jiu, on the other hand, had directly slit her opponent's throat. After doing so, she had already searched his entire body, found three listening devices and a tracker, and thrown them on the ground to be crushed underfoot.
Her methods were appallingly practiced.
"You're not keeping him alive to interrogate him about who's behind them?"
"It's useless to ask. We're not strong enough right now, and we can't just go knocking on their door to kill them. Getting the spoils of war is what's important. I suggest you interrogate him now, then finish him off before midnight."
As she spoke, Wang Jiu collected all the spoils of war from the Archer.
Xie Lu was exasperated. "After you said all that, do you really think he'll give up any clues?"
"Of course he will. I have a lot of potions at my place. Want to use them? They'll probably be useless after midnight. We shouldn't let them go to waste."
Xie Lu felt that her tone seemed to carry a hint of glee within its regret, a touch of perversion within its glee, and a dose of seriousness within its perversion.
But he agreed.
"You have blood on your face," he mentioned after agreeing.
"Oh, thanks." Wang Jiu casually wiped it off and was done with it. She didn't care if the wound would scab over, nor did she mind that the wiped blood became a red smear against her cold, pale skin, looking a bit strange.
Xie Lu: "..."
Was this even a woman?
There was probably a boorish slob living inside her body.
The man with the broken leg was dragged into the laboratory. Before he could even bear the pain, he saw Wang Jiu bring out dozens of potions as if they were prized family heirlooms, even recommending several types to Xie Lu.
"These are all fast-acting and highly effective. Please, trust my professional expertise. Pour a vial of this for him, and his blood will start to boil. Then his skin will break out, turn blue, and his internal organs will be invaded by toxins. He'll feel cold, then hot, followed by nausea, and finally, he'll actually vomit up pieces of his burnt liver… It's a process. You can make him suffer for as long as you want. Macro-control, micro-management, sustainable development. Want to try a vial?"
She sounded like she was selling milk tea.
The broken-legged man: "???"
What the fuck? Was this the mission target mentioned in the intel, the one who was supposedly "unable to accomplish anything significant"?
Xie Lu was no stickler for rules. When dealing with an antisocial individual from such a malevolent background, he had no objection to Wang Jiu's ruthlessness. He took the potion and was about to pour it into the man's mouth.
The iron will of a soldier. Be as warm as spring to your own people, and as ruthless as the autumn wind sweeping away fallen leaves to your enemies.
"I'll talk! I'll tell you everything!"
Having run into two ruthless individuals, the man was terrified. The words just tumbled out of his mouth, and he revealed all the intel.
