LWGP - Chapter 20
Chapter 20: The Bumps
Wang Jiu wasn't sure if this counted as a discovery. For instance, after she fired, right before the bullets reached the Mini-Boss's body, the bumps on its skin would squirm slightly, and its hide would darken a shade.
To be clear, with her original eyesight, she would never have been able to spot these microscopic changes. But after adding points to Agility, her five senses had been enhanced to a certain degree, including her vision.
She calculated that her current Agility was 4, but her eyesight was at least three times better than before.
Discovery was followed by suspicion. This suspicion stemmed from her judgment that a level-two grey monster shouldn't have reached the point of having absolutely bulletproof skin. Even the bronze-grade Mutated Python was only at that level. Regardless of the python's level, there should be a significant class difference between bronze and grey. Back then, she had used a clever trick, and the fact that the cars in the abandoned basement were usable was a convenient environmental factor that helped her turn the tables and kill it.
But if this level-two grey monster had also reached that level, it would be too much of an exaggeration.
So she figured this bulletproof ability wasn't absolute. There had to be an activation condition, or in other words—it had a weak point.
With this suspicion, she now began to guess that these bumps were the key to controlling its skin transformation.
If an advantage is nullified, it becomes a weakness.
She started shooting at the bumps. The first shot missed; it was her first time handling an assault rifle, and she wasn't used to it.
The second and third shots hit, but there was no reaction.
Was her judgment wrong?
Wang Jiu frowned but didn't rush. With her Agility attribute, she was faster than this monster anyway. Staying here wasn't particularly dangerous, so she could just treat it as cooperating with these soldiers.
But if she could take down this monster...
Wang Jiu narrowed her eyes and aimed at it again.
Bang!!
The bullet struck a bump again. The bump dented slightly, then ejected the bullet.
But this time, something changed—the monster was looking at her, its gaze somewhat fierce.
Hmm... why is it looking at me?
I'm not the only one shooting you. They've fired more bullets than I have.
Wang Jiu's thoughts flickered for a moment. She stood her ground, silently meeting its gaze. The other special forces soldiers noticed as well. Seeing her bloodstained clothes and appearance, they guessed she was a passenger, but one who had picked up their comrade's gun.
"Ma'am, please leave immediately, it's dangerous!"
They shouted, only to see the person raise the gun again and fire at the monster!
She hit a bump again.
Ma'am, you've got some serious nerve!
Although the special forces soldiers had known from the start that this person was unusual, they were still shocked—of course, they hadn't noticed that she was consistently shooting the bumps, but rather that she dared to open fire and seemed to be a skilled hand.
Was she retired military, or from the criminal police system?
"Roar!" The Mini-Boss was enraged. It abandoned the annoying special forces soldiers and charged straight toward her.
Wang Jiu finally confirmed one thing. The monster wasn't paying attention to her because she was shooting it, but because she kept hitting its bumps. It sensed a threat!
Oh ho, that proves my guess was correct.
"Ma'am, it's dangerous, please get away!"
Seeing the large monster run toward Wang Jiu, they hurriedly gave chase, firing their guns to try and distract it. Most importantly, the minibus was over there too.
But they soon discovered two things.
One bad, one good.
The bad thing was that the minibus seemed to have a problem. The driver was shouting that some car part had failed and it wouldn't start. The passengers on board were terrified. Seeing the monster closing in, they all scrambled out of the vehicle.
The good thing was that the woman had moved to the side, and the monster actually followed her, chasing after her. And her speed... was that fast?! With a light leap, she could jump onto a small truck on the side!
The squad leader of the special forces team's eyes lit up, as if he recognized something. But they also heard Wang Jiu, who had jumped up, call out a reminder to them: "The bumps on its body control the activation of its bulletproof skin, but I'm not sure which one is the real control point."
Bumps?
They were somewhat astonished, but it was as if they'd been enlightened. Looking at the densely packed bumps on the monster's body, they began to speculate, though they were still half-convinced.
"Try shooting the bumps, observe if there are any changes. If there are, find the key point!"
The captain, Qi Dong, gave the order decisively. Only then did everyone start trying their best to aim for the bumps on the monster's body. Fortunately, while the bumps weren't large, they weren't minuscule either, so they could still aim for them. But that passenger seemed to be in great danger!
The monster had already charged to the front of the small truck. At that instant, Wang Jiu fired a bullet, hitting a bump on its head. It still bounced off, but it must have been very painful, because it became enraged and swung its axe at Wang Jiu.
Bang!
The body of the small truck was actually cleaved halfway through by its axe, almost cut in two. But Wang Jiu had already jumped down from the roof. After landing, she turned and gave it a whistle.
The Mini-Boss: "!!!"
Although they were different species, it got the human's provocation!
Roaring, the Mini-Boss chased after her, swinging its axe. Wang Jiu was too fast. Her 4 points in Agility gave her a running speed of over 100 km/h, far exceeding the current human record of 49 km/h. This was second only to creatures specialized in running, like cheetahs.
The Mini-Boss was heavy. Although its short bursts of power were strong, after Wang Jiu created a gap at the very beginning and started leading it on a chase, it huffed and puffed but couldn't catch up at all. What disgusted it the most was that she didn't just run for her life. She would run for a bit, create distance, shoot the bumps on its body with bullets, and then dodge again, leaping up and down, far more agile than a monkey.
You're getting closer, you're getting closer, but you can't hit me, you just can't hit me!
Her positioning wasn't flashy or exaggerated, but it was sharp and skilled, steady and solid.
Mysteriously handsome.
Wang Peng and the others, who had fled and hidden in the distance, were stunned. One of Xiao Li's friends murmured with emotion, "This is like a battle royale or a real-life CS match. Is she perfectly kiting the boss?"
The only question was who would be the one to end up in a loot box!
The Mini-Boss felt sick, truly sick to its stomach! It was incredibly irritable and began to randomly smash and chop at its surroundings—cars, boxes, whatever was there, it wrecked them all.
Hmm, a small head, so its intelligence isn't outstanding?
But the main reason was probably that this female passenger had thoroughly disgusted it.
Qi Dong and the others saw this too, but they didn't just stand by and watch the show. With Wang Jiu drawing its attention, they could focus on shooting, and they managed to hit many bumps.
There were indeed changes, but they hadn't hit the crucial one. Wang Jiu silently identified these locations and committed them to memory.
There were at least two hundred bumps on its body, and they couldn't guarantee they hit a different one each time. When would this end?
"If we can't find it, we'll just have to wait for command to send in the armored artillery team!"
This was the worst-case scenario, because the fastest they could get there was still half an hour away. They could dispatch a combat helicopter or a bomber first, but that would be too big of a scene. Most importantly, there were too many people on site right now. Regular bullets were useless, so they had to use high-yield thermal weapons, but the blast radius was difficult to control, and they feared injuring people.
But they couldn't just let it stay here either! It had probably realized that the female passenger was impossible to hit and had started to notice the passengers who couldn't run fast, consciously moving in their direction!
"We just evacuated the passengers from the plane that landed on the other side of the airport. Two other civilian airliners have already arrived. The tower just notified them to circle in the sky and wait, but if this goes on for too long and other planes can't land either, the situation will become very serious."
"For some reason, many of the airport's minibuses have broken down and can't be started. We can't dispatch any vehicles to pick up the passengers from CU8266 for now!"
"Command has already sent a combat helicopter. You must continue to contain it! That's an order!"
Qi Dong had just reported the situation and received his orders, but he hadn't given up on finding the key bump. Suddenly, he had an idea.
"This monster keeps staring at that woman. Is it because she was the first to consistently shoot its bumps? This means it's also sensitive. Perhaps we can judge which key bump it's trying to hide based on its physical reactions..."
Just as he was thinking this, he suddenly saw Wang Jiu, who had been dodging all this time, suddenly run toward the CU8266 aircraft.
CU8266 was already a wreck. When she ran over, could she be heading for that vortex?
The Mini-Boss's intelligence was low, but it remembered Wang Jiu, and its hatred for her was extremely high. Seeing her approach the dungeon vortex, it immediately gave up attacking the surrounding special forces and vehicles, and also stopped chasing the passengers, charging straight over.
Wang Jiu was seen running quickly up the boarding stairs and even jumping onto the roof of the plane. At a total height of twelve meters, she stood high above. Watching the Mini-Boss get closer and closer, she fired three or four shots. There were bumps on its abdomen, chest, and thigh. The Mini-Boss deflected all these bullets, roaring and swinging its axe as it ran to the front of the plane. At this height, it couldn't hit her even if it swung its axe.
So, it looked toward the boarding stairs, but it hadn't started running over yet.
Wang Jiu opened fire!
Bang!
This time, the bullet hit its left shoulder.
And this time... the Mini-Boss's body language changed. It reflexively retreated, pulling its left shoulder back and away.
It was nervous, intentionally dodging!
This small movement made Qi Dong's eyes light up, as if he suddenly realized that in all their previous shooting, because they were all on the ground, their firing height and angle could never reach its shoulder. But that female passenger had been on the small truck and other high places. During her kiting, some bullets might have come close to its shoulder, causing it to have some subconscious small movements—and she had noticed.
That's what led to her now using the twelve-meter height of CU8266 to shoot its shoulder directly.
Its reaction undoubtedly verified that the key bump was on its shoulder.
Although they realized this, they didn't have the height advantage. It was too high!
They couldn't get on the plane's roof either; they didn't have that kind of agility.
Not unless the combat helicopter arrived.
Qi Dong was helpless. He could only place his hopes on Wang Jiu. If she could disable that key bump, then the guns in their hands would be useful.
At that moment, Wang Jiu's firing frequency was very fast. There were eight bumps on the monster's left shoulder. She shot them one by one. It was just bad luck that she hit six without getting the right one.
A one-in-two chance?
From one-in-eight to one-in-two, she couldn't be that unlucky, could she!
A rookie firing randomly might have blindly hit the key bump!
Wang Jiu's expression tensed slightly. She had counted her bullets. There weren't many left in the magazine, only three rounds remaining!
That should be enough.
A bullet shot out. This time, bang!!
