LWGP - Chapter 15

Chapter 15: Goblin

She could tell the other party was a player, but only because she guessed his incident was also related to the Tutorial Instance. She had also noticed that his leg injury had already recovered; the discomfort in his movements was a facade. His eagerness to be discharged from the hospital was further proof. Moreover, he had been secretly observing her, likely afraid that she, being a doctor, would see through his secret.

His worry was justified—she had indeed seen through him.

The System's answer was also affirmative.

This young master was indeed a new player, and a registered one at that.

There was no inherent way for players to see through each other, unless...

System: "Unless one party is three levels higher than the other."

Wang Jiu translated the System's words, understanding it to mean—you're all a bunch of level 1 newbies right now, so don't even think about seeing through each other's trench coats or bikinis.

The flight from Lin City to the capital was a little over two hours, which was quite fast. For some, it would pass in a bit of conversation or a short nap.

Normally, Wang Jiu was full of energy, but after a recent string of high-intensity, high-frequency surgeries and today's accident, she should have been exhausted. However, because she had added a point to Stamina, she felt nothing of the sort. In fact, she felt like she could perform another ten surgeries.

Is this the effect of +1 Stamina?

Very nice.

She had also tested the effects of Agility. A few quick steps felt light and nimble, but she knew its true upper limit would depend on her performance in a real situation.

Checking the time, there was still an hour to go. A thought suddenly occurred to Wang Jiu.

"By the way, you mentioned a wilderness invasion mode before. If one actively descends, will I get a notification?"

This probably didn't count as key information.

"Within a certain range, yes."

"How large a range?"

"At your current level, your detection range is probably about the size of this plane."

Wang Jiu's heart inexplicably skipped a beat. She had jinxed others so many times that she was afraid of karma catching up to her.

"You're quite the comedian," Wang Jiu said grimly.

System: "I can be even more of a comedian."

System: "Ding-dong, announcement: Player ID 564344744, you are now being notified that a wilderness dungeon is about to descend upon your current location. Please prepare, please prepare!"

Running parallel to the System's notification were the flight attendants pushing the dinner cart down the aisle. They had just reached her row, their gentle, clear voices accompanying them.

"Hello, sir. Milk or orange juice? Coffee? Certainly."

You could choose your drink on a plane, but you couldn't choose this dungeon.

Wang Jiu was stunned for three seconds before she calmly said to the System, "I'm on a plane. This is the sky. If we fly past it, it'll be fine, right?"

If she were on the ground, even being thrown into a zombie-infested building from Resident Evil would be better than this!

If the plane crashed, everyone would die, 100%!

System: "Under normal circumstances, wilderness dungeons can descend randomly or be premeditated. If it's premeditated, the dungeon itself has locked onto your plane. It can be carried along with the plane as it flies."

Carried along, carried... along?

What an insane way for a dungeon to start.

Wang Jiu cursed internally, but Xiao Li, sitting beside her, cursed out loud in reality, "Fuck!"

He had probably received the notification from his system as well, perhaps even being informed of the anti-humanitarian "carried along" operation.

One of his cronies, Wang Peng, was taken aback. "Ah Li, who are you cursing at? We're on a plane, with a pretty doctor next to you and flight attendants right here. What more could you want? Let's be a little more civilized... Fuck, what are you doing!"

Wang Peng yelped, because Xiao Li had suddenly shot to his feet.

The flight attendant was also startled and asked him what was wrong, but Xiao Li was too agitated to explain. He could only raise a finger and shout, "Look over there!"

His movement was large, and Wang Jiu saw it too. Their seats were in the middle section. Following his gaze forward, she saw a small black vortex appear above the aisle in the front cabin area. The vortex was expanding at a rapid rate, quickly growing to the height of half a person.

"What's this?"

"What the hell, am I seeing things?"

"Is that a 3D holographic projector?"

"Am I the only one seeing this? Honey, do you see it?"

The passengers seated at the front grew restless, but it was merely surprise, not yet reaching the level of terror. That was, until they saw a greasy green claw extend from the vortex.

And in that claw was a large... spiked club?

Without a word, Xiao Li took off running.

Wang Peng, who had also stood up, exclaimed, "Holy shit!"

It was unclear whether he was shocked by his friend's suddenly agile legs or by the green-skinned creature that had emerged.

It was an upright creature with arms and legs, but its proportions were strange, not conforming to human anatomy. Most importantly—its ears.

Long and pointed.

"A Goblin?" Someone recognized the fantasy creature. If this was a projection, it was far too realistic. It had already jumped out of the vortex and brought its spiked club down on a security officer who had rushed over.

In an instant, blood and flesh splattered across the faces of the passengers in the first two rows.

Stunned silence was followed by piercing screams.

The passengers in the front were terrified. The flight attendants serving meals, after their initial shock, did not retreat. Driven by their professional duty, they tried to move forward.

"Don't come over here!" The Chief Purser shouted at them to stay back and calm the passengers. She, however, swiftly took off her high heels and viciously struck the back of the monster's head with the sharp, thin heel as it was bludgeoning the security officer.

The passengers' screams had masked the Chief Purser's approach, and the Goblin hadn't noticed. It took a direct hit to the head, and sticky green liquid immediately oozed from the wound. Its head drooped, but the Chief Purser could feel that her heel hadn't delivered a fatal blow; it had only broken the scalp and struck its hard skull.

With a trembling wrist, she pulled the heel free, about to strike a second time. But the injured Goblin whipped its head around. Its greasy green eyes, fierce and cruel, locked onto her. It raised its spiked club, ready to smash it down on the Chief Purser!

Thump! Xiao Li, having arrived, kicked it squarely. At one-meter-eighty, he was a big guy, while the Goblin was only the size of a seven or eight-year-old child. The kick sent it sprawling to the floor. Xiao Li seized the opportunity, straddling its back and using his weight to pin it down. He reached for its spiked club, but before he could get it, the Chief Purser yelled, "Be careful!"

A second Goblin had emerged from the vortex. Seeing its companion in danger, it charged directly at Xiao Li's back.

As it rushed down the aisle toward Xiao Li, a large, unopened bottle of orange juice came flying from behind it.

The force... Thud!!

It smashed into the back of its head with a dull thud. The Goblin collapsed to the ground, a depression in the back of its skull, and didn't move.

The juice bottle fell to the floor and cracked open.

By now, Xiao Li had wrenched the spiked club away. The System fed him its attribute data.

Spiked Club (Grey Grade, one of the weapons used by Level 1 Grey Monster Goblins) Attribute: Strength +1

He was delighted and tried to equip it, only to find the System prohibited it. It was designated as a Goblin-exclusive weapon. Other races could use it, but they couldn't equip it and thus couldn't gain the Strength attribute.

This! Well, it's better than nothing!

Annoyed, Xiao Li had no choice but to pick up the spiked club and look back.

He wasn't stupid. He knew the drink must have been thrown from the direction of the meal cart. With that kind of strength, a flight attendant?

It couldn't have been Wang Peng and the others!

The entire plane was in chaos; he couldn't tell who it was at all.

"There's more, there's more!!"

Someone screamed.

A third Goblin charged out of the vortex.

Xiao Li had no time for questions. He swiftly smashed the spiked club down on the head of the Goblin beneath him, killing it. The System notified him that he had killed a wilderness dungeon invading Goblin and noted that it was a Level 1 Grey Monster.

This was no time to check kill stats. He stood up to intercept the Goblin charging toward the passengers, but he suddenly realized someone was faster than him. Frighteningly fast.

Wang Peng and the others had been in a state of shock—from Xiao Li revealing his perfectly fine legs and speed, to the Goblin brutalizing the security officer, to Xiao Li getting the Goblin under control, and then the second Goblin...

It's over, my 'cheating' brother is about to get killed!

Just as they were panicking, Wang Jiu got up, moved past him, and grabbed a large bottle of beverage.

The flight attendants were busy organizing passengers anyway, paying no mind to the meal cart.

Holy shit, miss, you can still calmly 'steal' a drink at a time like this?

Just as Wang Peng was about to speak, he saw her throw the bottle.

Thud!

After the second Goblin fell, the flight attendant turned to see a figure flash past her.

"Hey, don't go over there, it's dangerous!"

She couldn't stop her. The speed was too fast; she only saw a shadow. Then she saw Wang Jiu raise a hand, a greyish-white dagger appearing in it. With a downward diagonal slash, the Goblin's neck was half-severed, and it collapsed to the ground with a thud.

Judging by the feel, Wang Jiu determined the Goblin's skin armor index was around three or four—much tougher than a human's, but not exceptionally high, provided one had a weapon.

Good, their individual lethality was limited. The real danger was that this was a high-altitude plane full of people.

And the monster spawning speed was increasing! Because the vortex had also expanded!

"Dr. Wang?!" Xiao Li was now certain the person before him was also a player, but he hadn't expected it to be Wang Jiu.

"You take that side, I'll take this one. Watch the cockpit door."

Xiao Li was certainly not one to take orders from just anyone. He frowned slightly and didn't respond directly, but he realized she didn't need his response. She had been speaking to the Chief Purser.

She even handed a spiked club over, which the Chief Purser quickly accepted.

Xiao Li: "???"

The Chief Purser was well-trained. With the spiked club in hand, she felt a surge of confidence. With Xiao Li on one side and Wang Jiu on the other, they had effectively sealed the two "doors" of the dungeon entrance.

Understanding Wang Jiu's intent, she immediately picked up the nearby intercom. Her calm voice broadcast throughout the cabin, instructing all flight attendants to manage the passengers in the rear. Passengers from the first three rows were to move back and sit on others' laps to maintain stability...

They couldn't all move to one end, as the plane might become unbalanced. She was arranging them based on Wang Jiu's position.

The first three rows were just right. It would clear out space for the fight without endangering the passengers.

However, just as the arrangements were made, the vortex, which had been spawning one Goblin at a time, suddenly spat out two, with a third one emerging right behind them.

The passengers, who had just been moving under the flight attendants' direction, were terrified. A large man screamed and began shoving others, scrambling toward the back.

He was tall and strong, and many were no match for him. His push sent a group of people tumbling, and an elderly couple fell to the floor, crying out weakly in pain.

"Get out of the way, get out of the way!" The man was like a bulldozer, plowing his way back and violently shoving aside a woman holding a three or four-year-old child.

"Ah!" The woman cried out, caught off guard. She lost her balance and stumbled toward the side seats. Her only thought was to hold her child tight, protecting his head and chest, while she herself...

A hand suddenly gripped her arm. Someone pulled her up and pushed her into the arms of a flight attendant who had rushed over.

Her heart still pounding, the woman looked back and saw the young woman who had saved her casually kick out. The large man who had pushed her was sent flying into a nearby seat. Just as the man was about to curse in anger, a Goblin leaped into the spot where he had just been standing.

This Goblin had charged through the left-side seats of the first three rows, as if trying to break through Wang Jiu's defensive line.

And it was indeed about to break through.
