WEF - Chapter 27

Chapter 27: Revive, Zombies!

Ning Dali braced herself on one hand and stubbornly crawled to her feet despite being covered in blood.

Her blackened, shriveled, zombified skin regained its elasticity, while the bloody, mangled opening in her chest, through which air whistled, healed at breakneck speed, regrowing a heart, fat tissue, and muscle.

Before she died completely, Ning Dali had used [Strongman] to keep herself well nourished.

Had she reacted even a moment slower, she would have had to resort to [Nirvana]. At this very moment, Plague might have seen two Ning Dali's.

One dead Ning Dali.

One Ning Dali resurrected on the spot.

Then she would have had to deal with her own corpse again... Luckily, she had prepared in advance and saved herself the trouble.

Ning Dali patted her chest and let out a breath of relief.

"A scholar with a Resurrection Ability?" Plague said coldly. "I have never heard of you."

"I am a rising star in the academic world." Ning Dali said. "My research focuses on resurrecting zombies. Specifically, I use the Resurrection Ability to try to resurrect zombies, study the real cause of their zombification, uncover their true identities, and grant the zombies some peace..."

"The research is still in its early stages. I'm still capturing experimental subjects." Ning Dali pointed toward the zombies not far away, who were crawling painfully across the ground on their knees.

Plague glanced in that direction and gave a perfunctory "Mm."

"Who came up with this script for you? You are more creative than those before you, but not creative enough."

Ning Dali shouted, "What script? What creativity? I don't understand what you're talking about. You can insult my combat strength, but you cannot insult my passion for and pursuit of academic research!"

Plague sneered. "Your script might fool a fool like Ying, but trying to fool me? You're nowhere close."

No academic researcher would voluntarily approach her, and no one could obtain research results near her. Before beginning any research, all the Farming Folk would memorize her face, switch on their radar, and give her a wide berth.

This person's script was novel, but it contained a major oversight.

Plague's attitude grew colder.

Ning Dali paused. At a time like this, explaining would be covering up, and covering up meant evading the facts. The best approach was to turn the tables and seize the initiative, rather than jump into the trap of trying to prove herself.

She pulled out her smart device and snapped a burst of photos right at Plague's face. "I understand now. You're trying to avoid responsibility. Avoiding responsibility is shameful. I've already taken photos of your face and uploaded them to the cloud. You can't get out of this."

Plague froze as the smart device was held inches from her face. "What?"

"I was fighting zombies here. You suddenly appeared, ripped out my heart, and stole my gun." Ning Dali stepped forward, snatched the submachine gun from Plague's hands, and cradled it in her arms like treasure. "And now you're talking about scripts, or no scripts at all. Heh. Aren't you just trying to avoid responsibility? Let me tell you, it's too late!"

Plague gave a strange, unreadable look and said, at a loss for words, "You don't know me?"

She was the mighty Plague God, who could take anyone's heart whenever she wanted. She did what she did and took responsibility for it; what responsibility on earth did she need to evade?

Ning Dali let out a cold laugh and delivered the line with impeccable professionalism: "Don't you also not know me?"

No photo of Plague could be found online, whereas Ning Dali's muscle photos had gone viral all over the internet.

It was normal for her not to know Plague. It would be abnormal for Plague not to know this newly crowned superstar.

Ning Dali glared at Plague, entirely convinced of her own righteousness.

If she were the Shadow King, she would already be reflecting on her actions. But Plague fell silent for a moment, shook her head, and said, "No."

She was actually wasting her time and breath talking to someone. That wasn't her style.

Plague glanced at the zombies she had not yet finished off, then at Ning Dali, who might have a Resurrection Ability. She raised one foot and kicked, intending to send her flying to the horizon and out of sight.

Ning Dali clung tightly to Plague's thigh and secretly used Ying's power.

Plague kicked twice as hard as she could, but she still could not kick Ning Dali loose.

"No, what on earth are you made of?"

How could there be such a troublesome person? Not only was she interrupting Plague as she cleaned up the zombies, she could not be killed. And if she could not be killed, that was bad enough, but now she could not even be kicked away?

Where had Ying found this actress?

"What exactly do you want?" Plague said impatiently, a vein twitching in her forehead. She clenched her teeth and pulled a crystal from her clothes. "I'll give you one last chance to tell the truth. If you keep making a nuisance of yourself, I'll kill you so thoroughly that you'll never dare resurrect again in this life. I mean it."

Ning Dali looked at the crystal in shock. She could never have expected that not one piece of the information Ying had provided was reliable.

In Ying's words, Plague was an invincible force of destruction.

Whether weapons or tools, anything that stayed on her person for an hour would break down automatically. Even the clothes she was wearing would develop several holes within two hours.

How could someone like that pull out a crystal?

Although the way she pulled out the crystal was hardly graceful, she had indeed produced a genuine crystal.

Ning Dali was stunned.

The Shadow King, who had been hiding in the zombies' shadows to watch the show, was stunned too.

Even Plague herself was stunned.

She had not expected that the crystal she had obtained by accident would still work after four hours!

Maybe this was a miracle.

After making her threat, Plague silently exchanged a look with Ning Dali for a few seconds. Neither of them had the heart to crush this rare miracle.

Ning Dali's lips moved as she said, "All right, let's speak plainly. I'll stop pretending, and you shouldn't waste this crystal either."

Plague took the hint, nodded, and carefully set the crystal on the ground.

"I'll confess. At first, Ying really did force me to come." Ning Dali said. "She said I had a Resurrection Ability and that only by staying beside you would I avoid being hunted. She persuaded me to come to your side."

The shadow of a zombie in the distance shifted, and a look of disdain flashed across Plague's face, as if to say, "Just as I thought, I knew it."

"But once I got here and saw the zombies, I lost interest in you." Ning Dali continued. "I found a new avenue. I really want to do research now."

Resurrecting zombies was the same as resurrecting Federation experimental subjects. If she really could bring one back successfully, there would surely be many secrets inside it to uncover.

"What will you do after the research?" Plague asked.

"Then I'll join the Farming Faction." Ning Dali said, as if every word made perfect sense. "I've looked into this. People with a Resurrection Ability really don't live long, and I won't have a good life following you either. My only way out is to join the supreme Farming Faction."

The Farming Faction occupied an extremely high position in this world.

Whether it was the Extremist Eaters or the Restraint Faction, whether it was the Shadow King or the Plague God, everyone had to bow their noble heads before the Farming Faction.

Plague looked Ning Dali up and down and finally said with approval, "Then you're rather sharp. You have far more sense than Ying."

After being called brainless twice, Ying angrily rose from the zombies' shadows.

The zombies, with bullets in their knees, were startled by the sudden appearance of the black shadow. Just as they were about to attack, black shadows from every direction bound them in place.

Ying angrily squeezed her way between Ning Dali and Plague.

"So you had that plan all along? And you think you can join the Farming Faction?"

"Look, the mastermind has appeared." Ning Dali pointed at Ying and said to Plague. "I told you Ying forced me to come here to get close to you. Sigh, this is difficult for me too."

Ying's face turned as black as a shadow. Just as she was about to explode, Plague brushed her aside like garbage.

"So your claim that you wanted to research zombies is true?" Plague stared at Ning Dali for a moment, then frowned. "Can you resurrect other targets too?"

"Of course." Ying cut in coolly. "She just resurrected Sister Yuan. Didn't you see the news?"

Plague's smart device had crashed several days ago. She rummaged through Ying's clothes and pulled out a smart device to read the news.

The internet was flooded with news, and it was indeed all about Yuan's resurrection.

"So she really does have a Resurrection Ability." Plague muttered. "She resurrected Sister Yuan. Not only does she have a Resurrection Ability, she also has Yuan."

"Well, she's nothing like those clumsy actors from before." Ying added in a sarcastic tone.

"Can I conduct my experiment now?" Ning Dali asked.

"You really are going to..." Ying began, but a cloud of black mist sealed her mouth before she could finish. The rest of her sentence vanished. She opened her mouth and found her throat swollen like a walnut, unable to make a sound.

Plague encouragingly patted Ning Dali's shoulder. "Do your experiment properly. Make sure these zombies don't get out and spread the virus. I'll have Ying watch over you."

Mute Ying: "?"

She turned into a black shadow, and several large white words appeared on her face.

[Did I agree?]

"This is for the good of all humanity. Be sensible." Plague said. Then she picked up the treasured crystal and, with a knowing air, turned and walked away.

For safety, and so as not to affect the results of Ning Dali's experiment, Plague ran three li in one go.

With an inexplicable expression, she sat down, removed the bandages wrapped around her wrist, took a sewing kit out of her pocket, and prepared to put a few patches on her clothes.

"You really let her research zombies." Ying appeared beside Plague again, as if she could not be shaken off.

Plague glanced at Ying coolly.

She wanted to ask how Ning Dali's experiment was going, but was afraid that the moment she opened her mouth, she would become a plague to someone.

She finally simply said, "Mm."

After a pause, Ying asked, "I have a question. That is, if Ning Dali really can resurrect zombies and turn them back into normal people, then after all these years, haven't you...

...killed all those innocent zombies for nothing?"

Plague stared at Ying with pitch-black eyes, the corner of her mouth twitching.

"You think I would feel guilty?"

"No one in this world has had a guilty conscience for fifteen years." Plague said without any emotion.

"Whether they became zombies or could be resurrected, it had nothing to do with me. I kill zombies to protect the people. I agreed to let Ning Dali research them for reasons of my own."

"If you think those zombies died for nothing, tell Ning Dali to resurrect them one by one. I have no objection."

Ying fell silent abruptly.

"And you really think these zombies were caused by me?" Plague laughed derisively.

"Xiao Ying, you'd be better off becoming a food blogger. Saving the world doesn't suit that brain of yours."

Meanwhile, Ning Dali brought down her knife and killed two zombies.

The two zombies lay side by side on the ground, both completely dead.

Ning Dali held her breath and activated the second skill of [Nirvana].

Only one of you can die.

One of the zombies suddenly opened its eyes, starkly black and white, and its gaze gradually came into focus.

Just then, a bad premonition flashed through Ning Dali's mind: after all the trouble of resurrecting a zombie, would the Federation snatch it away?

She immediately shouted, "Ying!"

The shadow beside them stirred lazily.

Ning Dali and the zombie on the ground instantly merged into the shadow, entering a state in which they could not be locked onto.
