The First Pope - Chapter 106
Chapter 106
Before the God Race claimed the Slade Sea Region as their territory, this place had been struck by a tsunami after the destruction of the Ocean God's temple. Although the tsunami eventually receded, it left devastation in its wake, and few dared to venture near the region's borders.
It wasn't until Cynthia led the God Race to drive out the Vampires and claim the area as their own that the environment of the Slade Sea Region began to improve bit by bit. Over time, it even became suitable for human habitation.
The transformation of the Slade Sea Region was undeniably swift, but destroying these changes was also an incredibly easy thing to do.
Under the corrosion of the Power of Darkness, the vibrant trees gradually withered. Rows of simple yet sturdy houses were reduced to ruins. Even the fruit trees, carefully tended to feed more people, were not spared under the shroud of dark power. Seeing all this, Susan's eyes turned crimson, her heart bleeding.
"This is too much! I will kill them," Susan said viciously, her hands gripping the railing and her teeth biting her lip.
Before meeting Cynthia, Hatz City had been her everything. She had faced the threat of her city's destruction back then, but she had never felt such heartache and fury as she did now.
Hatz City was her means of survival, but this place was her hope—and not just hers alone.
Darcy, who was resting against the railing with her eyes closed, heard the slight tremble in Susan's voice and patted her on the shoulder. Her own voice was extremely hoarse from chanting spells for so long. "If we can get through this, I will not let the Sethite clan get off easy."
The gentle smile she usually wore had long since vanished. Her long silver hair was casually tied back, and her golden eyes, now open, were filled with an icy coldness.
Susan glanced at Darcy, frowning. "Don't talk. Get some rest."
As she spoke, she turned her head, trying to find Chloe's figure among the God Race members. Her tone was laced with worry. "Chloe went to deal with the Sethite wizards after only a short rest. Will she be alright?"
Darcy also turned, her gaze sweeping the area, but she couldn't find Chloe anywhere. This made her brow slowly furrow.
"I just saw her holding a piece of parchment with a spell written on it. Do you have any Light Magic spells that need to be learned on the spot?" Susan asked.
Darcy froze. The days and nights of battle had clouded her thoughts. She searched her mind but couldn't recall any new spells that required learning on the fly.
They had practiced the spells Cynthia taught them countless times and could chant them without looking at the incantations. Except for... Darcy suddenly thought of something, and her expression changed. She tightened her grip on her staff and turned to descend the lighthouse.
There was only one spell she could think of that would need to be learned on the spot in a situation like this. But that spell was strange and bizarre; they had discussed it before and all agreed not to teach it to their people.
Although Cynthia had given them the incantation, it was only for research purposes. She didn't actually approve of them using it.
Susan was startled by Darcy's sudden change in expression. Seeing her turn to leave the lighthouse without a word, Susan frowned and followed behind her.
They were only halfway down when the gloomy sky above suddenly brightened. A blinding golden light made it almost impossible to open one's eyes. Susan instinctively raised a hand to shield her face and exclaimed, "Is Cynthia back?"
Darcy stopped dead in her tracks. She looked up at the spot where the golden light had erupted, her face grim. "It's Chloe..."
Susan froze. She lowered her arm, enduring the stinging pain to look at the golden light, wanting to ask something. But after seeing Darcy's expression, she held her tongue, her heart growing heavier by the second.
When Cynthia returned to the God Race via the Teleportation Array, the battle here was not yet over. Darkness and light were locked in a confrontation that looked like it had been a stalemate for a long time.
Chelsea and the witches had also returned with Cynthia. The moment they stepped out of the Teleportation Array, they felt the pressure of the darkness. Their relationship with the God Race was clearly better than the Elves', and many of the witches' faces were already etched with anxiety.
Chelsea hurriedly led the witches away to support the front lines. Cynthia glanced up at the standoff between light and darkness, then turned to Joanna beside her and said softly, "It seems the enemy is difficult to handle. However, I'm sure this is nothing for the Wolf Race. The vice clan leader should be careful. If you lose, it won't be easy to explain to Clan Leader Helen."
Joanna met Cynthia's gaze for a moment, then smiled and nodded. "They're just some Sethite wizards who know a few dark spells. The Wolf Race has never taken them seriously. How could we possibly lose?"
She gave a look to the elder and other Wolf Race warriors behind her. The wolf-people charged out, an invisible domain unfurling and shattering the darkness.
"You just fought a major battle with the Vampires, so stay back and rest. I'll take care of these few Sethite wizards," Joanna thoughtfully advised Cynthia, then turned and followed the other wolf-people, her figure quickly disappearing from sight.
Cynthia watched Joanna's retreating back, her golden eyes narrowing slightly, a playful smile touching the corners of her lips.
Days and nights of sleeplessly using Light Magic had left some of the God Race unable to fight. They huddled in a corner of the city wall, leaning against each other and resting with their eyes closed. Though their heads were splitting, they tried their best to relax, wanting only to recover some of their spiritual energy as quickly as possible.
There were quite a few God Race members crowded in the corner, and the spot was cold and damp—hardly a good place to rest. One of them, who had just retreated from the front lines, was leaning against the icy wall, dozing off, when she suddenly felt a hand on her forehead. It was warm and gentle, and a pure Power of Light enveloped her, slowly clearing her chaotic thoughts.
She opened her eyes in a daze. When she saw the face of the person whose hand it was, she cried out in pleasant surprise, "Cynthia."
Her voice startled those nearby. The God Race members opened their eyes one by one, and all were filled with delight upon seeing Cynthia.
"Let the knights help you back to rest. When you wake up, it will all be over." Cynthia reached out and stroked one of the God Race's hair, her deliberately slow voice sounding exceptionally gentle.
Whether it was because Cynthia's power was so deeply ingrained in their minds, or because her calm and steady demeanor was so reassuring, upon hearing her words, the God Race's taut nerves finally began to relax. The fear that had lingered in their hearts slowly dissipated.
The knights guarding nearby heard Cynthia's command and ran over to help the exhausted warriors. Cynthia bent down, picked up a staff someone had dropped on the ground, and then ascended the city wall alone.
With the addition of the Wolf Race and the witches, the Sethite wizards' advantage instantly turned into a disadvantage. The Wolf Race had a certain resistance to the Power of Darkness. As long as they could withstand the attacks and get close to the Sethite wizards, it often only took a few swipes of their claws to take a wizard's life.
After all, aside from their Power of Darkness, the bodies of the Sethite wizards were as fragile as humans'. If the God Race were injured, they could use Healing Spells on themselves, but the Sethite wizards could only wait for their wounds to heal slowly.
Dealing with such an enemy was too easy for the Wolf Race. Except for those witches whose Power of Darkness was too strong for them to approach while under attack, they casually slaughtered heaps of the less powerful ones.
Without the dark spells from these witches, the pressure on the God Race immediately lessened. Darcy, who was leading the fight at the very front, saw the reinforcing wolf-people, and her grave expression softened slightly. She turned, her gaze quickly scanning the area before finally settling on the city wall.
Above the city wall, a powerful surge of Light was gathering. Behind the dazzling golden light, a slender figure could be faintly seen. Darcy stared intently in that direction for a while before pulling her gaze back. She tightened her grip on her staff and said to the God Race member beside her in a low voice, "Pass down the order to capture a few of them alive."
She looked up toward the Sethite wizards, her tone cold. "Preferably an elder."
They would remember this grudge against the Sethite wizards. And she would definitely find the person who helped them destroy the Teleportation Array before the attack.
As long as they could capture an elder, using the God Race's natural talents to extract information would be the easiest thing in the world.
The situation had shifted from a great advantage, to an advantage, to a disadvantage in the blink of an eye. The Grand Elder stood at the rear, watching the sudden appearance of the wolf-people, his face as dark as water. The bone staff in his hand had shattered at some point, and the hand gripping it was stripped of flesh, leaving only white bone. Blood soaked his sleeve, dripping down, seemingly unable to be stopped.
Joanna floated in the air, a look of surprise on her face as she saw the Grand Elder's wretched state. She knew his strength; even she had to be cautious when facing his dark spells.
Someone from the God Race actually managed to injure him? Joanna sized up the Grand Elder, curious about the person who had wounded him so badly.
Having his right hand crippled left the Grand Elder simmering with resentment. He wished he could kill every last member of the God Race, so even when he saw the Wolf Race and the witches appear, he stubbornly refused to retreat.
But Joanna's appearance startled him, extinguishing the flames of rage in his heart.
He knew that Joanna had followed Talia to besiege the Elf Race. He had always believed in the Vampires' strength and had never considered the possibility of their defeat.
But now Joanna was here... and appearing in this capacity. The Grand Elder's heart sank. He raised a hand to support his ruined arm and roared at the people beside him, "Retreat."
Sunny, who was in the middle of chanting a spell, paused. She wiped the sweat from her face and asked in confusion, "We're just letting them go like this?"
The Grand Elder couldn't be bothered to explain. He simply gestured to the other elders with his eyes, signaling them to quickly lead the retreat.
Their position was toward the back, making a retreat relatively easy. But many of the witches were further ahead, and it would take time for the order to reach them.
Although Sunny didn't know why the Grand Elder had suddenly ordered a retreat, she still put down her bone staff, intending to go to the front to relay the command. But something faster than her arrived first: a golden light that suddenly spread from behind the God Race's lines.
The domineering Power of Light tore through the darkness. A cage-like barrier descended right in front of Sunny, nearly trapping her within it. The immense pressure forced her to retreat involuntarily.
The Grand Elder watched the barrier of light fall, his face dark and grim. Sunny didn't dare approach it and couldn't help but turn to look at the Grand Elder for help.
The Grand Elder was silent for a moment, then gritted his teeth and said, "Retreat."
Sunny hesitated. "But what about them..." Many of their people were still trapped inside the light barrier.
The Grand Elder averted his gaze coldly. "Go."
He would make the God Race pay double for the clansmen sacrificed this time.
