LWGP - Chapter 31

Chapter 31: Black Widow

Chen Hu and his companion were dumbfounded. They subconsciously recalled the empty master bedroom from last night's assassination attempt. The two exchanged glances, but Yang Yu was much quicker. He immediately sensed something was wrong, his gaze drifting upstairs.

The sound came from upstairs.

This wasn't good.

His nerves tensed. He was about to leave and rush to the second floor to see what was going on.

Just then, in a patch of weeds less than three meters away, the carelessly tossed Mystic Realm Fragment activated.

A crimson light spread across the ground, forming a blood-red array. Then, in less than a breath, enormous eight-legged spears, four to five meters long, pierced out and slammed into the earth. Beneath its fat, massive abdomen was a bright red, hourglass-shaped pattern a meter in diameter. Its entire carapace was smooth and black.

Over five meters long, it instantly made the once-spacious clearing feel cramped.

A classic poisonous spider—a Black Widow.

Except its size was off the charts. It looked exactly like a mutant spider monster from a sci-fi movie or a Black Widow spider demon from a fantasy drama.

From her hiding spot on the second floor, Wang Jiu, who was monitoring the ground floor clearing via her phone, couldn't help but let out a little "whoops" in the system.

You came all this way, so sincere, just to die. And I'm here, remote-controlling a spider demon across dimensions, overflowing with badassery.

Are you satisfied with this little meeting?

My dear Young Master Yang.

System: "A level-five Bronze-grade mini-BOSS, the Black Widow. Your luck in this area is quite good."

The implication was that the monster she'd summoned was too formidable for her to defeat herself, but it was more than capable of taking care of Yang Yu and his men.

Wang Jiu, however, wasn't too concerned. She just watched the screen as the three of them were scared out of their wits by the monster's sudden appearance, not even having time to scream. Lin Guang had just taken out the rookie's essential Rookie's Dagger when… puchi!! A spider leg easily pierced through his chest. Immediately after, its long mouthparts stabbed down from above his head.

In the few short breaths it took for him to die, what did he think of?

The empty master bedroom with its fluttering curtains?

Was it the past, after he was caught raping a student and served a few years in prison, only to get out and, when he raped and murdered again, knew to pick unsupervised homeless women from the lowest rungs of society, destroying the evidence and disposing of the body?

The good old days of getting rich through theft, robbery, and kidnapping with no initial investment?

The realization that latching onto a powerful patron had its benefits, leading them to join the Yang family to receive their protection and do their bidding?

Or was it sitting in the car with his brother after a battle, marveling at the good times to come, how they were about to make it big?

Gurgle… His head shriveled up. Plop. His two eyeballs were sucked dry along with it.

The skin-covered skull revealed empty, bloody eye sockets.

A breeze blew in through the factory's open doors and windows. It carried the stench of seafood and blood, passing through the two eye sockets and out through the top of the empty skull…

Despite having spent years in the criminal underworld and witnessing plenty of murder scenes, Chen Hu was so terrified his legs went weak. But driven by the instinct to survive, he, like Yang Yu, tried to flee. The spider's speed, however, was terrifying. Propelled by its eight spear-like legs, it shot forward five meters in an instant, right behind them.

Yang Yu was decisive. He immediately grabbed Chen Hu, who was in front of him, and threw him backward.

"No! Yang Yu, you'll die a horrible death!" Chen Hu screamed. After landing, he tried to get up, but a long spider leg pierced through his thigh with a clang. He tried to crawl away but was dragged back.

Screams, screams, and more screams.

Then, silence.

Followed by the sounds of slurping and chewing.

Yang Yu's scalp tingled with fear, but he was ruthless. Gritting his teeth, he was about to bolt from the factory. He pulled out his phone to make an emergency call, but before he could unlock the screen, something suddenly wrapped around his leg.

He looked down.

Snow-white spider silk.

Yang Yu was horrified as his entire body was hoisted upside down.

At that moment, there was a slight stir on the second floor, the sound of steady, unhurried footsteps. But it was drowned out by the violent commotion on the first floor. Yang Yu, desperate to survive, didn't notice at all.

It was Wang Jiu. She had stood up. In the darkness, she slowly opened the lid of the seafood cooler below her, took out a large and heavy object, and slung it effortlessly over her shoulder. She walked out step by step, pulling a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from her pocket as she went.

Slender, pale fingers pulled an even more slender ladies' cigarette from the pack. Click. The lighter sparked to life. The blue inner flame and orange-red outer flame lit the cigarette. It burned with a soft hiss, and a wisp of smoke twisted, pale gray in the darkness.

She walked to the edge of the shadows, where the light spilling from a hole in the roof cut through the gloom, and stopped. She brought the cigarette, held between her fingers, to her lips.

From this angle, she could see the situation below. She was waiting.

Downstairs, Yang Yu had already drawn a long blade and slashed through the spider silk binding his leg. He landed just as the Black Widow's leg stabbed at him. Pushing off with his foot, he leaped backward, taking cover behind a pillar.

He was ruthless, after all. Not completely useless.

Bang! Another spider leg thrust at him. He dodged. The leg pierced the pillar, going straight through!

Debris flew everywhere.

A good chance! Yang Yu immediately swung his long blade in an upward diagonal slash.

Seeing this, Wang Jiu raised an eyebrow, somewhat unimpressed.

Clang!!

The long blade struck the spider leg, producing a sharp, metallic ring. Then, the leg swept out… bang! Yang Yu was sent flying, crashing into another pillar more than five meters away.

Pfft!

Yang Yu spat out blood, his eyes filled with terror!

It was too terrifying!

Yang Yu must have also asked his system about the Black Widow's level. When the system told him, he turned and bolted for the exit.

Even five of him couldn't beat it!

But would the Black Widow let him escape?

Clang, clang, clang! The terrifying spider legs stabbed into the concrete floor, making the sound of metal piercing stone. Then, in the blink of an eye, it shot another stream of spider silk at him.

Swish!

Yang Yu didn't dare turn his back to it. He narrowly dodged, rolled, and swung his blade. Clang, clang, clang!

He parried three attacks from the spider legs, but each time he was sent flying. Again and again, he spat blood; again and again, he struggled to his feet; again and again, he tried to escape, only to be dragged back. But his stamina seemed particularly high, allowing him to keep struggling despite the high-intensity attacks and the huge gap in power.

On the second floor, Wang Jiu watched with a cold gaze, assessing Yang Yu's approximate attributes.

Strength around 7, Agility around 6, Stamina at least 5, maybe even 6.

These attributes were actually terrifying, far exceeding the average for current Registered Players. They were even much higher than the 3s and 4s of expert players.

"Considering the timeline, he went through the tutorial instance yesterday, same as me, and then became a Registered Player. Even if the Yang family was prepared and helped him through another wilderness dungeon, given his intelligence and temperament, he wouldn't have uncovered many side quests or saved many people. His rating would be limited, so he wouldn't have gotten many attribute points. Besides, if such a wilderness dungeon really existed, and that formidable scar-faced man was there, the cunning old fox Yang Dong would have prioritized supplying the scar-faced man to win him over and not alienate him. That's the proper way to build a faction in the early stages. Yang Dong is an old fox in the business world; he would definitely make that choice. And Yang Yu, with his selfish and malicious nature, is jealous of the scar-faced man and can't stand him. So, it's highly likely he got a powerful, all-attribute Bronze-grade item from the tutorial instance, one better than my Azure Serpent Emblem. Otherwise, with his aggressive personality, he wouldn't have distributed his attribute points so evenly, especially not into Stamina…"

It wasn't that Wang Jiu looked down on Yang Yu; it was that his aptitude simply didn't match such attributes. Otherwise, what would that make elites like Qi Dong and his soldiers?

But thieves were an exception. Yang Yu didn't walk the righteous path.

After some thought, Wang Jiu came to a conclusion. She even thought of a specific item—the necklace Zhang Dongcheng had mentioned.

The necklace the Old Lady had found through her guide, only to be murdered and have it stolen by Yang Yu.

Thinking of this, Wang Jiu blew a smoke ring, her eyes unreadable. Below, Yang Yu still had stamina, but that didn't mean he could keep getting up to fight.

Because he was injured. He kept getting injured, his wounds worsening, bleeding more and more. He even had a few broken bones.

His speed began to slow, and his mind grew hazy—side effects of excessive blood loss.

He was afraid, but he came up with a plan—he would jump to the second floor!

There must be someone up there! That bitch Wang Jiu!

Fighting for a sliver of hope, Yang Yu mustered all his remaining strength and leaped, trying to reach the suspended walkway on the second floor.

But as he reached mid-air, Wang Jiu, in the darkness, pulled a game-issued brick from her inventory and gripped it in her hand.

Swish! From the second floor, a brick flew down with terrifying speed.

Now, wearing the Azure Serpent Emblem which gave +3 to all attributes, Wang Jiu's stats were as follows.

HP: 5

Strength: 11

Agility: 9

Stamina: 5

Agility meant attack speed, and Strength meant attack power.

Just imagine how vicious a brick thrown with 11 Strength and 9 Agility would be.

Yang Yu, still in mid-air, didn't even see that it was a brick before… bang!! The young master's face took the hit head-on. Two bloody teeth flew from his mouth along with a spray of blood. His ascending body faltered and fell downward, and then… puchi! A sharp spider leg shot up from below, piercing him right through the middle of his body.

A perfect intersection point—right between his legs.

The playboy Yang Yu, who had known countless women, let out a bloodcurdling scream. Pinned by the spider leg, he was dragged to the ground. Thud. He tried to crawl away, but his body was pulled back. Then, his eyes saw the enormous head of the Black Widow, dripping with saliva, drawing near.

Its mouthparts and sharp, mutated fangs were inches away.

"Save me, save me, I was wrong!"

"I didn't mean to do it!"

"Save me! I'm begging you, save me!"

"I…"

The person he was extending his hand to, begging for mercy, stood in the shadows, smoking, and ignored him.

As quiet as if she were dead.

Yang Yu despaired, but his eyes were filled with hatred. He struggled to crawl away, like a vengeful ghost seeking revenge on the person behind the scenes. But alas… flesh splattered, and a scream was torn from his throat.

This scene was perhaps just like what others had recently suffered.

Including the Old Lady.

And yet, even at this point, she hadn't lifted a single finger to take his life.

Oh, at most she threw a brick, but that was only to stop him from rushing up to attack a weak woman like her.

Just self-defense.

She really was such a good, law-abiding person.

Mainly because the Old Lady had taught her well.

On the second floor, Wang Jiu, musing to herself, glanced at the cameras placed at various angles. She put the phone connected to the video software into her inner pocket, then stubbed out the cigarette she had smoked a third of. With a flick of her finger, she sent it flying to the side.

She stepped out of the shadows and into the light, walking to the corner where the second-floor balcony railing met the wall. She unslung the weapon from her back—a sniper rifle.

A sniper rifle taken from a seafood cooler.
