Evolution - Chapter 75

Chapter 75

Lu Youwen composed himself, a look of bewilderment on his face. “What decapitation strike?”

What nonsense was he talking about? A decapitation strike? That name sounded so damn awful. He wasn’t doing that!

The person opposite him fell silent for a moment, turning to exchange a look with his companions. Unfortunately, the protective masks they wore were too effective, making it difficult to communicate with winks and nods.

He turned back, cleared his throat, and asked tentatively, “Well, then, we want to try a decapitation strike. Will you join us?”

The two rows of ‘gangsters’ nodded in unison, looking at Lu Youwen with anticipation.

As long as they could stir up some trouble and have fun, who cared who was leading and who was following!

Lu Youwen paused. Was there really a difference? He understood what they were saying and what they were doing. One way or another, they were sticking to him, is that it?

The invulnerability period was precious, and Lu Youwen didn’t want to waste too much time here. Besides, having more people wasn’t a bad thing. “So what’s your plan?”

“We’ll listen to you!” the other person replied bluntly.

Lu Youwen was momentarily speechless at his words.

Although only a few words had been exchanged, the delay, coupled with the large number of people, made Lu Youwen reconsider. After a moment’s thought, he had to abandon his plan to immediately rush to the point near the central area.

When their massive group arrived at the point near the entrance, they terrified the hundred or so people who had entered earlier and gathered there.

If this new crowd hadn’t come from the agreed-upon direction, they would have thought the Chief Student candidates had cleverly figured out their plan and were coming to surround them.

“Password!”

Lu Youwen’s face darkened. “Are you happy?”

Muffled laughter could be heard from the people scattered around.

Someone drew out their response in a teasing tone, “I am very happy!”

The nearly two hundred people on their side also lowered their heads, their shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter.

Lu Youwen shot them a sideways glance. “Isn’t it fun to cause trouble?”

“It is! Super fun!” the group hurriedly replied.

“Then what’s so funny?!”

“We’re laughing because we’re happy!”

“Hahaha!”

After they linked up, one of the people who had arrived earlier came over. “Is that about everyone? We’re just waiting to go out with a bang, then head down for dinner, a shower, and some sleep!”

Although they weren’t the first group to enter, they had arrived early and had already been there for five or six hours. Of course, they weren’t waiting for a commander, but for an enemy.

The Chief Student candidates had entered this area late.

So all they could do was eliminate the lively points-fodder while waiting for the enemy to appear.

Lu Youwen grunted in agreement. “About right. They’ve been in the field for nearly two hours, so their team should just be getting started. A team that’s just starting out might or might not be short on people, but they’ll definitely be short on ammunition.”

Those lone wanderers weren’t just charming points; they were also mobile armories.

So?

“Let’s lure them over and set a trap!”

First, a reconnaissance team was dispatched, moving toward the direction of dense gunfire that sounded like an organized attack rather than scattered shots.

The target they were looking for was an organized, coordinated, large team of over a hundred people who were aggressively sweeping for points.

Such a target was quite easy to find.

Just over an hour later, a member of the scout team returned and described their target’s position and route of advance in detail.

With the enemy’s location confirmed, it was time:

“We need to send out a decoy team now.”

With a “swoosh,” everyone eagerly raised their hands, indicating “I can do it.”

Lu Youwen was stunned. Had the ‘cannon fodder’ profession become so popular?

In the end, thirty or forty people were chosen. They were responsible for luring the enemy into the ambush circle.

Evidently, this number was perfectly controlled. The opposing force had nearly two hundred people and was actively and greedily sweeping up points, not even letting go of scattered groups of one, two, or three. How could they possibly ignore a group of thirty or forty?

To them, a small team of thirty or forty was a tempting piece of fatty meat—plump, juicy, and easy to swallow in one bite.

Was it difficult for over two hundred people to take on a group of thirty or forty? A five-to-one ratio was excellent, an absolute advantage. Their own side wouldn’t suffer significant losses; it was very safe.

So, they naturally moved to encircle them. The thirty or forty people then scattered in a panic, with only five or six remaining behind to put up a stubborn resistance, covering their brothers’ escape.

Five or six people were, of course, no match for one or two hundred. They were quickly “killed” and lay on the ground playing dead.

“Damn, what kind of people are these?! Not a single bullet left!”

The martyred brothers chuckled. They had each brought only five bullets. Who would be willing to supply the enemy with ammunition, right?!

It seemed the enemy was indeed short on ammo. Finding not a single bullet on the fallen brothers, they grew frustrated and pursued even more relentlessly, hoping to take out the group before they wasted all their bullets!

The second group to be martyred was slightly larger, but still—NO! BULLETS!

And so, the team, desperate for both points and ammunition, chased this chaotic but unbroken group, pursuing them all the way until they gradually entered the ambush zone.

As the leader of the main point-scoring force, the target of Lu Youwen’s group was naturally at the front of her team. She was quick to react. The enemy’s repeated flights, though seemingly scattered, always managed to regroup, with some even staying behind to cover the retreat each time…

Her intuition told her something was wrong, and she ordered a halt to the pursuit.

At that moment, only a third of her team had entered the ambush circle.

Hearing her command, the people at the front hesitated for only a moment before stopping.

Lu Youwen sighed softly. It seemed his luck wasn’t great; he’d run into a suspicious and cautious opponent.

Since the other side was already suspicious, there was only one option: “Kill!”

“Charge!”

“Don’t let them get away!”

“Kill one to break even, kill two to make a profit!”

Cries of battle erupted from all directions!

Accompanied by a downpour of bullets!

From the sound of it, there had to be three or four hundred people.

The hunter instantly became the hunted.

The team that had been relying on their numbers to annihilate a small squad now found themselves the weaker party.

“Hold the line, hold the line! Rear guard becomes the front line! Cover the retreat!” This commander had some skill. Even though she knew they had likely fallen into a trap, her expression grim, she quickly stabilized her team and began to counterattack, fighting as they retreated, retreating as they fought.

Lu Youwen led his people in hot pursuit, sticking to them like glue.

His group was getting fired up. Leaving a small contingent behind to loot bodies for ammunition, the majority charged forward, howling and shouting as they gave chase:

“Brothers, let’s go wild! A fight’s a fight, so let’s hit her while she’s down and finish her off!”

“Don’t run! Stay and fight!”

“Passing brothers and sisters, come join the fun! What’s the use of points? Bullets are meant to be squandered!”

They taunted their opponents relentlessly as they chased them down.

And believe it or not, some people actually thought they had a point. Wasn’t a good, hearty fight before heading down the mountain for dinner better than skulking around, hiding from place to place, and starving?

Seeing the massive, lively battle here, some people, without a second thought, actually contributed their ammunition to the cause, raising their guns and firing wildly.

But this was truly a double-edged sword.

These newcomers couldn’t be bothered to distinguish friend from foe. In a massive brawl, everyone was an enemy. Who cared who you shot? Just close your eyes and fire!

Gradually, everyone in the area was drawn in, laughing as they unhesitatingly raised their guns and joined the chaotic fray.

Lu Youwen was both exasperated and amused. What was clearly a battle between two sides had bizarrely devolved into a free-for-all.

“They’ve all run off, let’s go too!” someone next to him shouted.

Immediately, someone else shouted back even louder, “Go where? No one’s leaving! You’re all staying right here!”

Wasn’t it better for everyone to go down together? If they left now, they’d have to search all over the mountains for people again, hiding and sneaking around.

After seeing the opponent lead her people out of the battle, Lu Youwen also withdrew his forces. They didn’t go far, however, just quietly observed from the periphery. Once the gunfire in the massive brawl began to die down and the number of people dwindled, he left a dozen or so people to stand guard—to shoot anyone who approached—and led the remaining twenty-odd people back to clean up the battlefield.

First, they cleared out another wave of people, turning the signal lights of the few stragglers left from the brawl from green to red. Then, they began looting the bodies.

“Hurry up, they’ll definitely be back for a rematch soon!”

This chaotic battle had left at least seven or eight hundred “corpses.” Even if each person only had two or three bullets left, it was an irresistible temptation for the opposing team!

With two or three thousand rounds of ammunition, even if the enemy only had thirty or forty people left, they could still make a whole new world of trouble!

What was the scarcest resource in a massive brawl? It wasn’t people, it was ammunition and supplies!

Depleting their carried ammunition and cutting off their supply lines was more effective than anything else.

As they were cleaning up the battlefield, not yet finished, the people who had stayed behind earlier to collect ammo also arrived.

Lu Youwen did a headcount and found they still had over sixty people. But now, they possessed more than three thousand rounds of ammunition.

He couldn’t help but grin. He distributed the bullets, giving each person thirty rounds and entrusting the rest to a few others for safekeeping. “Let’s go. We’ll move a bit further ahead and send all the newcomers whose invulnerability period has ended right back where they came from!”

While Lu Youwen was letting himself go, preparing to implement a scorched-earth strategy against the candidates in his area, Ji Changqing and Gu Changge, who had already stirred up major trouble earlier, were having a happy reunion at the statistics office at the foot of the mountain.

They had lasted ten hours on the mountain, each taking out a target and leading their brothers around to collect heads and rack up points.

After a while, they got bored. Their mission to cause chaos was complete, and the points weren’t of much use to them. It was better to head down the mountain early for a wash and a good night’s sleep.

So, as the sun began to set, they had proactively volunteered to be front-line suicide squad members, charging recklessly a few times until they successfully got themselves sent down the mountain.

The two met where they were turning in their firearms and protective gear. They exchanged a smile, not asking what had happened to the other, and handed in their equipment together before heading to the cafeteria.

Gu Changge said, rather sheepishly, “Changqing, uh, I ran into He Qingzhi up there… and gave him half my ammunition.”

Ji Changqing’s eyes darkened, and she let out a faint, “Oh.”

The deed was already done. Telling her now was rather pointless.

Did he expect her to give him a thumbs-up?

The fact that she hadn’t kicked him was already a sign of her restraint, okay?!

She didn’t dislike He Qingzhi, but she didn’t have any good feelings about him either. She just found him a bit extreme and subconsciously wanted to avoid any interaction with him, let alone deal with him.

During the entrance exam, although He Qingzhi had been captured and hadn’t earned many points in the latter half, he had performed exceptionally well in the beginning. Combined with his extremely high scores on the written exams, his overall rank was still in the top twenty.

During the new student training, he had pushed himself especially hard, gradually raising his overall rank into the top fifteen.

It was just that before the battle, when everyone was deciding on the plan to stir up trouble, Gu Changge had hesitantly suggested that they not include He Qingzhi on their kill list.

Through some explanation from the others, she learned that He Qingzhi’s family was quite peculiar within the Alliance, notorious for valuing Alphas and looking down on Omegas. Of course, they weren’t so obvious about it on the surface, but the difference in upbringing was clear. Alphas were painstakingly groomed for careers in the military and government, while Omegas were raised to be socialites. As for Betas, they were raised casually.

The He family had been reluctant to let He Qingzhi apply to a military academy in the first place. It was unclear how he had convinced them, but he had ended up enrolling at the Fourth Military. After the incident during the entrance exam, the He family’s plan was to bring him back and have him attend a different university.

But He Qingzhi was even more resolute.

At the time, the Fourth Military’s original plan for all the captured students, regardless of their ABO status, was to allow those who were admitted to defer their enrollment for a year, during which the university would arrange for psychological counseling.

He Qingzhi, however, insisted he was fine and that receiving counseling at the school would be better, so he went ahead and completed his enrollment procedures directly.

Once he had enrolled and become a new student at the Fourth Military, there was nothing the He family could do, no matter what ideas they had.

Gu Changge’s reasoning was that if He Qingzhi could become this year’s Chief Student, his family’s attitude toward him might change, and his relationship with them wouldn’t be so strained.

He hadn’t been bold enough to ask everyone to directly help He Qingzhi, only to remove him from the kill list.

Everyone had naturally agreed.

Although, removing him from the kill list was, in effect, a roundabout way of helping him secure the position of Chief Student.

And now, Gu Changge had gone and given him half his ammunition on the field.

Ji Changqing sighed internally. Their original plan to just stir up chaos had, thanks to Gu Changge’s slick move, now turned into them taking He Qingzhi’s side.

This… was truly aggravating.
