Chapter 65: The Supreme Sage Hopelessly Obsessed with Beauty (24)
In truth, Lord Nai Yin rarely used light-element magic as a finishing blow.
Light, after all, was an element that represented life and brightness.
Although Nai Yin could transform even the gentlest, most healing Great Light Spell into an apocalyptic assault of countless pillars of light, the fundamental nature of the element remained unchanged. In combat, light magic was naturally less effective than dark magic.
However, displaying one's beauty and power before a lover was an instinct common to nearly all living creatures.
And what grand forbidden spell could be more splendid and magnificent than one of the light element?
Upon the pure white ice field, pillars of condensed light crashed down. Upon striking their target, they dissolved into shimmering flecks of gold dust that scattered in every direction, a beauty as ethereal as a dream.
Nai Yin maintained an enigmatic, noble, and coolly elegant posture as she cast the spell, but her deep black eyes discreetly glanced toward Yue Du, as if hoping to see an expression of admiration and adoration on her lover's face.
Instead, she caught sight of Yue Du’s action—her adorable little bird of paradise was covering her eyes tightly with one hand.
Nai Yin’s figure, along with her expression, froze in place. Standing there in the snow, dressed in a flimsy gown, she looked almost bleak.
Her idea, of course, had been a good one. The Nai Yin version of the Great Light Spell possessed both beauty and lethality. At first glance, it was indeed the perfect choice to display her strength.
…The only prerequisite was that her audience could actually see it.
As the caster, Nai Yin didn't feel anything was amiss, but in reality, the sheer brightness of the pillars of light filling the sky was enough to instantly blind any ordinary person who looked directly at the scene.
Even though her body, a product of the System Store, was sufficiently resilient, Yue Du's eyes still ached out of instinct.
The countless motes of light that appeared after the pillars dispersed were a different kind of bright. Paired with the already dazzling, eye-straining whiteness of the snow, Yue Du truly felt as if she were about to go blind on the spot!
Her thin eyelids couldn't block that level of brightness; she had to raise a hand to shield them!
“…”
Yue Du waited a moment, letting go of her hand only when she guessed the light had subsided.
She looked up right into her host's pitiful, wronged gaze.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think…” she said in a low voice.
“It’s fine. I saw it through my system’s senses. It was beautiful.”
Yue Du’s gaze swept over the half-dead Snow Bear King on the ground. She paused, then added, “And very powerful.”
Nai Yin broke into a small smile.
This was the first time Yue Du had seen Nai Yin truly use magic.
Nai Yin was a Dharma Saint; she could instant-cast ordinary spells as naturally as breathing.
But this time, she had finally uttered a beautiful incantation, wielding her staff to cast a forbidden spell.
The power of the foremost Dharma Saint was displayed before Yue Du without reservation. While she felt an instinctive awe, a strange sense of pride welled up inside her.
This is my woman.
Yue Du thought.
She took off the fur cloak that Nai Yin had wrapped around her earlier, draped it over her lover's shoulders like a shawl, and casually tidied Nai Yin's wavy, long hair.
The slender fingers that had just been holding the black-and-gold entwined staff now rested lightly on Yue Du's wrist.
The atmosphere was tranquil and serene.
Just then, a nearby snowdrift stirred.
The great bear tenaciously raised its head and roared, its tone fierce but its voice weak, “Humans, you—”
Yue Du: “…”
She suspected this bear had no intelligence whatsoever, and no emotional intelligence either.
To have become the hegemon of the ice field, it must have been a formidable fighter—though clearly no match for Nai Yin.
Without even looking, Nai Yin waved her staff.
She couldn't be bothered with aesthetics this time. Ropes of jet-black element, shimmering with an odd metallic luster, shot out from the tip of her staff, binding the struggling Snow Bear King securely.
The elemental ropes coiled around it several times, their ends burying themselves deep beneath the ice. This spell wasn't a forbidden one; under normal circumstances, the Snow Bear King could have broken free with some effort.
But now, it didn't even have that much strength left.
Nai Yin retracted her staff and said coldly, “You should be glad. Today is a wonderful day, and I don’t want to mar it with blood and death.”
“Otherwise, you would have most certainly become a rug in my castle—a summer fur rug, you know.”
Yue Du did a quick mental translation. It basically meant, “It is not proper to shed blood on an auspicious day,” the kind of line you'd often hear in period dramas.
In the past, the only male celebrity she managed had often played princes and kings in various period dramas, and he had said that line so many times he was tired of it.
But why did Nai Yin’s version sound so captivating?
Yue Du thought about it and suddenly realized that there wasn't a single thing Nai Yin said—aside from when she was trying to be infuriating—that wasn't captivating.
The newly-official couple circled the Snow Bear King's enormous body and continued their stroll across the ice field.
As they leisurely passed by, Nai Yin shot the great bear a sidelong glance, a cruel smile flickering in the depths of her eyes.
Of course, she wouldn't personally kill the bear and make this perfect day imperfect.
But Nai Yin Galor was a woman of her word.
She had said last time that if it came looking for trouble again, she would kill it, right?
—That being the case, why did it have to fearlessly seek her out and interrupt her wonderful time with her lover?
With a smile still on her lips, Nai Yin looked away.
She wouldn't lift a finger.
However, there were plenty of others here who coveted the hegemon's throne. Whether the magical beasts of other races on the ice field would pass up this golden opportunity, she had no idea.
Yue Du had never been in a relationship before, nor had she ever made a point of learning about them.
However, the nature of her previous job meant it was impossible for her to be completely clueless about romance: which starlet had found someone she liked, which A-list heartthrob was dating in secret, which pop queen had decided to get married on the sly—all these things had to be factored in.
All things considered, relationship problems were unavoidable.
For this very reason, during the first few days, Yue Du felt as if her relationship wasn't real.
It wasn't that anything was bad, but rather that everything was too good, possessing a comfort and security she couldn't quite describe.
They were less like a couple in the honeymoon phase, and more like an old married couple…
The dynamic of their relationship seemed no different from before their confession, except for the addition of physical contact—gentle, affectionate embraces and snuggling.
All the things couples do in a new relationship—like eating together, shopping, traveling together—seemed to be things they had already made a habit of over the past two years.
However, Yue Du didn't have the feeling a certain starlet had once described to her, of “sitting across from them and feeling like your heart is about to leap out of your chest.”
It all felt so… normal.
As she was thinking this, Lord Nai Yin, sitting across from her, was resting her chin in her hand and gazing at her with a broad smile. On her gorgeous face, the delighted smile seemed ready to spill over.
“Zoning out during a meal isn’t good,” Nai Yin said with a smiling wink. “However, zoning out while looking at me is a different story.”
Yue Du: “…”
Yue Du picked up a small dessert with a silver fork and brought it to Nai Yin's lips.
Nai Yin had been happily fed these past few days, and now, just as before, she bit into the dessert without hesitation, her rosy lips pursing against the silver fork, whether intentionally or not.
As she drew back from the fork, the bright red tip of her tongue could be glimpsed.
Yue Du looked down at the silver fork and thought calmly:
Well, I might not feel like my heart is about to leap out of my chest, but my ears certainly feel like they're about to catch fire.
She took back her earlier thought. After all, many aspects of their relationship did align with the honeymoon phase.
Their first kiss happened naturally. At that time, Yue Du was letting Nai Yin drink her blood.
Ever since the two of them became official, Nai Yin had openly begun experimenting with all sorts of things—such as trying new “dining” locations.
Vampires weren't limited to biting just the neck; wrists, fingertips, ankles, and even other more private places were all fair game.
However, Yue Du wasn't quite ready to be bitten in certain places just yet. Nai Yin didn't press the issue, contenting herself with lingering over her wrists and fingertips several times.
This time, it was the wrist.
They were very close, almost in a full embrace, with Yue Du's other hand resting on Nai Yin's shoulder.
So when the silver-haired beauty in her vampire form looked up, licking the corner of her lips, the corners of her eyes tinged with red, and gazed at her with that ineffable look brimming with love and desire, Yue Du had to admit she was utterly bewitched.
Without overthinking it, she closed her eyes and leaned in.
She missed her mark at first, her relatively pale lips landing on her host's chin. The other woman didn't seem to register it at first and didn't respond.
Yue Du recalled the kissing scenes she had witnessed on countless film sets and put the theory into somewhat clumsy practice. She tilted her head slightly, shifted upward to find the softer target, and then gave it a tentative press of her lips.
Nai Yin's grip on her forearm suddenly tightened. Yue Du mumbled, “That hurts a little…”
The pressure eased instantly. Nai Yin seemed to let out a soft, low chuckle before retaliating.
It was a kiss tinged with the taste of Yue Du's own blood. Yue Du couldn't quite understand the appeal of blood's flavor, but she was in no state to ponder it now.
Soon, the taste of blood faded as they kissed.
