First Battlefield Commander! - Chapter 248
Chapter 248: Extra 17: Blind Date
In the spring of the second year, during their vacation, Lian Sheng's team voluntarily signed up for post-war reconstruction volunteer work, bringing Cornell along back to Kafa.
The reconstruction work in Kafa had already largely entered its regular phase, with professionals guiding various industries. The volunteers' task was essentially to experience life.
The organizers handed them a large bag of different flower seeds and brought them to a newly cultivated flower field, letting them have free rein.
Zhao Zhuoluo dug a hole with a shovel, and Lian Sheng tossed in a seed. Zhao Zhuoluo dug another hole, and Lian Sheng tossed in another seed.
Zhao Zhuoluo asked, "Can't you put in a few more?"
Lian Sheng said, "Why? You only made one hole."
Zhao Zhuoluo: "What if it doesn't sprout? What if the seed is dead?"
"What if there's not enough nutrients? What if several seeds are alive?"
Zhao Zhuoluo said, "They usually grab a handful. Otherwise, we'd never finish planting by next year."
Lian Sheng: "This is just an experience activity anyway. How could we not finish such a small amount of seeds? One machine could handle the entire flower bed."
The mud-covered Fang Jianchen shouted from afar: "Flowers planted by machines have no soul! No soul at all!"
Lian Sheng: "..."
Lian Sheng: "..."
Screw his soul.
Ji Ban somehow found a small excavator and drove it around, churning up the entire field into a mess.
Harry fought him for control, neither willing to yield.
Soon, the soil was thoroughly ravaged by them.
The only ones seriously digging holes and planting seeds were the two of them, completely unable to keep up with the others' speed at causing trouble.
By noon, Lian Sheng gave up too. The group lay on the ground, enjoying the breeze and sun.
It had to be said that while Kafa's weather could be terrible, when it was good, it was truly wonderful. The pleasantly cool temperature, the occasional gentle breeze, the clear sky, and excellent air quality.
Lying around like this easily made one sleepy.
Fang Jianchen reached into his pocket, grabbed a handful of seeds, and tossed them into the air with a flourish. Those lying below were all hit.
Everyone spat out the flower seeds and angrily said, "Are you an idiot?"
Fang Jianchen curiously asked, "Would flowers planted like this grow in human shapes?"
Cheng Ze: "I think you're just an idiot in human skin!"
Fang Jianchen lunged at him: "Screw you!"
In the evening, their superior came to inspect. Everyone lined up, waiting for his speech.
He arrived in high spirits but left looking ashen-faced. Who would have thought an experience activity could turn out like this? Had these people's brains been addled by too much fighting? How could they have such destructive power?
Lian Sheng looked at the sky and said, "I had nothing to do with it."
She knew how to farm but wasn't as familiar with planting flowers. Even if she didn't know how to plant flowers, she certainly wouldn't have made such a mess.
The leader barked at her: "Don't say anything! The facts speak for themselves! Look at the mess you've made!"
Lu Mingyuan tugged at her, begging her to stay quiet.
The leader was deeply disappointed, berating them harshly and ordering them to stand on the hopeful field's edge, gazing into the distance, engraving their sins deeply into their minds.
The leader solemnly declared: "You're undermining the harmonious relations between our nations! Destroying our profound friendship!"
Everyone: "..."
Leader: "Do you understand your mistakes?!"
Everyone meekly replied: "We do."
"As punishment, tomorrow you'll undergo an education in love and promote related activities, striving to fill the world with love." The leader coughed. "The new generation military singles mixer is about to begin. Besides elite members from the military, there are many socially outstanding youths who've signed up voluntarily, their information verified. There are handsome men and beautiful women. Students and working professionals alike. You can all go and join the fun."
"..." Everyone, "..."
Ten pairs of eyes stared at him intently.
"I feel my reflection on my mistakes isn't deep enough. Although I only passively damaged the harmonious relations between nations, as the team leader, I failed to stop my teammates from making mistakes and should take responsibility for their actions." Lian Sheng said, "I've decided to stay here and restore this flower field."
The leader pointed into the distance: "Then keep looking! Look until you understand your mistakes!"
So everyone continued standing on the hopeful field, gazing into the distance.
The night was cold and dewy, the sky filled with twinkling stars, the ground beneath them vibrant with fertile soil, and behind them sat a superior leader on a chair, supervising.
It was an exceptionally fulfilling night.
After the war ended, the higher-ups became very concerned about the young soldiers' marital status. Especially Hundred Meter Flying Dagger.
Young wasn't exactly young anymore. There were plenty of single soldiers in the military nearing thirty. At thirty, dating for a few years, getting married, and having a child would likely make them elderly fathers. Given how few women they usually met, if they didn't put in effort, they might end up like Hundred Meter Flying Dagger.
Thus, Hundred Meter Flying Dagger, now successfully transformed into Hundred Meter Middle Dagger, became the scapegoat for all single soldiers under him and even those not under him.
"See, it's because he doesn't set a good example that this kind of atmosphere pervades the military."
Lian Sheng and the others chose to continue serving, and the Expeditionary Force was a place with an overwhelmingly masculine vibe. Missions were already heavy, sending them flying all over the world. Plus, with the war just ended, heroism was rampant in the troops.
What romance? What holding hands? Who needs that? Isn't it better to play with mechs and compete?
Older folks always loved playing matchmaker. Seeing them like this pained their hearts.
It was hard to arrange things for the boys, but Lian Sheng was always popular. Such a pretty girl, right? If just one couple could show some affection, surely others would follow suit, right?
So Lian Sheng had already received several similar requests.
The next morning, pressured by the intimidating gaze behind them, they still went to the mixer.
Cornell and Ji Ban stayed at the hotel, as they were utterly unwilling. The rest dressed formally. Lian Sheng, accustomed to military uniforms and pants, stuck to that style. A driver came to pick them up and take them to the venue.
The matchmaking team found them a headache—weren't they just asking for trouble? But they couldn't make things difficult now, so they turned a blind eye.
Besides them, many other soldiers attended, some sent from other regions. This was mainly to accommodate the single dogs within the organization.
This led to a problem. The soldiers were invited to mingle, but these bastards all crowded around Lian Sheng and the others, chatting, seeking advice, and arranging matches, forcing the ordinary attendees to form their own group.
They seemed particularly pleased with the mixer, all talking animatedly. The large banquet hall's corner was dominated by their presence.
At one point, Lian Sheng went to the restroom. When she came out, no one was around for once. A man walked over with a drink, smiling as he greeted her.
Before Lian Sheng could respond, a row of men emerged behind her.
All tall and imposing, chests out, chins up, eyes sharp. They scrutinized the man and snorted, "What, looking for our Lian?"
The man promptly bowed: "I'll be going. My apologies."
The leader came to inspect, saw this scene, and grabbed something to whack them with.
Troublemakers! All damn troublemakers!
The soldiers covered their backsides, fleeing inelegantly: "We didn't do anything! We just wanted to remind him that our Expeditionary Force's face has backup! He should be smarter in the future!"
Leader: "Does Lian need you as backup? Huh? Her own shield could withstand a nuclear blast!"
Lian Sheng watched the commotion, casually picking up a drink—most of the offerings were non-alcoholic, likely to prevent these unaccustomed drinkers from causing trouble—and leaned against a table. Soon, she noticed Zhao Zhuoluo standing opposite her, blocking her view.
Lian Sheng raised an eyebrow: "What?"
Zhao Zhuoluo said, "If you don't want to mingle, you can find an excuse. I don't like it either."
Lian Sheng thought, "Go on, kid," and nodded thoughtfully: "Hmm... go on."
"No one's as suitable or as outstanding as me." Zhao Zhuoluo flicked the medal on his shoulder. "And no one cares about you as much as I do."
Lian Sheng tilted her cup to her lips, hiding the lower half of her face, and gave him a meaningful smile.
