First Battlefield Commander! - Chapter 77
Chapter 77: Modeling
The battlefield's horn officially sounded.
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger directly pulled up the control panel and jumped out of the mech cockpit. The Red Team commander—Liu Hao hesitated for a moment, then also descended from his mech with the commander's panel.
After all, there couldn't possibly be any danger on their side, and sitting outside would be more convenient.
As Liu Hao climbed down using the tether, he saw Hundred Meter Flying Dagger sitting cross-legged on the sandy ground, fingers flying as he began modeling.
He directly placed the commander and vice commander markers at the innermost part of the map.
Liu Hao glanced at it and asked, "Shouldn't we wait until the map is fully revealed before doing this?"
They had already prepared their team arrangements, and now scouts were advancing from various directions to uncover the map.
The remaining teams were also lining up in an orderly manner, preparing for battle.
"Don't you think gray gives people a bad feeling? There's a special sense of security when the map is revealed." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger raised his head, tapped his temple and smiled. "This is also a kind of psychological suggestion."
Liu Hao thought it made sense but seemed unreliable: "But if the guess is wrong, such markings will become limitations to our thinking."
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger tilted his head: "Am I someone so inflexible? Changing data is just a matter of moving one finger."
Liu Hao: "..."
When encountering such a big shot, what else can you do besides kneel? Nothing!
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said: "They're definitely inside. Xiao Rui dislikes actual combat the most. And data analysts can't possibly go to the frontlines to fight either."
Hearing how familiar he sounded, Liu Hao remembered that the opposing vice commander was Zhou Shirui. Squatting beside him to look at the map, he said: "I was talking about their Piaoqi Great General. Her actual combat skills are very strong—she might go to the frontlines."
"She's a newly transferred student, right? This is also her first time on Sanyao. Although she participated in the league before, it was an ancient battlefield where she was just a small soldier. On Sanyao, most of her time was spent in arena matches. Which means this kind of mech battlefield is her first time participating." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said, "I don't think she's arrogant enough to directly abandon her duties as commander to go fight on an unfamiliar battlefield. She'll definitely need time to adapt at the start. And while adapting, would she hog one of the twelve high-spec mechs? That would be a complete waste of combat power."
If not piloting a high-level mech, it's easy to encounter danger on the battlefield. What the commander needs most is to ensure their own safety.
"Uh..." Liu Hao said, "You know her quite well too?"
"Not at all, just did some analysis before. But I didn't expect Lian Sheng to be Piaoqi Great General." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said, "Very few achieve victory through on-the-spot performance on the battlefield. Most victories go to the side that's better prepared."
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger forcefully tapped his finger down and laughed: "Come on, let's see whose home field this is."
While Hundred Meter Flying Dagger was chatting and laughing with Liu Hao, his fingers never stopped moving, rapidly tapping away. All the code had practically become muscle memory—no hesitation or thought needed. Even with his eyes closed, he would know where his fingers should land.
He was merely sketching out the images in his mind based on his intuition.
Liu Hao looked down and saw that starting from Lian Sheng's team's position, the gray map began filling out piece by piece.
The scouts ahead were still slowly uncovering the map, while the map Hundred Meter Flying Dagger had supplemented himself was already nearly half complete.
Liu Hao gulped and said nervously: "Um, Brother Dao, this isn't a jigsaw puzzle game."
"I know, I know. Don't worry, I'm very familiar with Sanyao's maps. Doesn't revealing all this look much better? It gives you direction when assigning locations too." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said, "Hurry up and command. We're about to engage at the frontlines soon."
Liu Hao looked carefully at the map and said weakly: "Sanyao has thousands of just the large maps alone."
The map he had reconstructed was already extremely detailed, including terrain, road width, and direction. This was a complete map, not some vague image.
Could this really be done in such a short time? How massive was the data stored in his brain?
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger laughed: "No choice. Who told me I'm a shut-in now? Got nothing better to do when idle."
Liu Hao wanted to kneel: "Big shot, don't say it like that! Big shot, you're scaring me!"
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger laughed heartily.
Within a few minutes of their scouts reaching the midway point, the entire map had been uncovered.
Looking at the map horizontally, Liu Hao's team was on the far left, while Lian Sheng's team was on the far right. From left to right, the terrain was: desert, mountain walls, plains, river.
Yet as the scouts advanced, covering the simulated map he had constructed earlier, there were hardly any changes.
Aside from the color differences used to mark the modeled areas and some additional details, there were almost no major issues.
The Red Team soldiers advanced while looking at the map, their morale high and exclamations endless. They kept glancing over, still finding it hard to believe.
Just as Hundred Meter Flying Dagger had said, after the map was uncovered, every step felt solid. This was an immense boost to the soldiers.
The skill gap was simply too vast! When had they ever seen a vice commander like this? How far would they have to go to reach this level?
A data analyst's modeling and analysis speed directly affected the commander's decision-making speed.
The analysts in their military academy were already considered quite good if they could keep up with the battle's progress. The battlefield was ever-changing—they had to adjust formations based on real-time feedback from soldiers, along with various unexpected events and enemy force analysis... The data that emerged during actual combat was far too much. In real battles, commanders had to make judgments and improvements themselves.
To reach Hundred Meter Flying Dagger's speed couldn't be explained by mere experience and familiarity. They were insiders themselves and knew that even in the military, this was undoubtedly top-tier skill.
Without talent, it was impossible to reach this level.
The scouts at the frontlines howled: "Brother Dao! Brother Dao, don't do this! You're killing our scout enthusiasm!"
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger asked: "What enthusiasm?"
The scouts said: "We want that whoosh-whoosh! The kind of enthusiasm where the map unfolds before us!"
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger understood: "Oh, got it! Your whoosh-whoosh enthusiasm!"
He tapped a few more times on the control panel, and the scouts' view of the map turned black again, while everyone else still had the full map.
The scouts were satisfied.
Another squad leader said: "Why does this feel like you're covering your ears to steal the bell?"
Liu Hao shouted to the team: "Comrades! If we lose this, there's no excuse! Show some spirit and take down the other side in one go!"
Ten minutes after the start, the Red Team obtained the full map ahead of time.
The stadium was boiling with excitement. Many had come specifically for Hundred Meter Flying Dagger and Piaoqi Great General's reputations, exclaiming that it was worth it.
"Holy shit! What kind of hand speed is that?! Did I just see afterimages?"
"Hacking! My Brother Dao is a hack!"
"Brother Dao, marry me!"
"Since ancient times, masters emerge from among the people. This skill is godly!"
"I don't think Brother Dao is really from among the people."
"I always thought that because of my admiration, I had added a filter to my image of Brother Dao. Today I learned I still underestimated him. I'm sorry, Brother Dao!"
"We're apparently not even in the same dimension as data analysts! Holy shit, I wouldn't dare exaggerate this much even in my dreams!"
"So a skilled data analyst can directly lower the game's difficulty by several levels. So this is why I always fail at battlefield command?"
"Classmate, have some shame. As a Class B command student, I refuse to take this blame!"
When passing through the mountain wall area, the Red Team adjusted their formation and slowed their pace.
Upon entering the plains, Liu Hao prepared to have them regroup and engage in battle there.
"No no, wait a moment." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger stopped him and pointed ahead: "See this collapsed area at the edge of the plains?"
Liu Hao: "..."
Liu Hao wiped his face: "Big shot, whatever you say is right."
This part of the map hadn't even been uncovered yet—it was just his own modeled version.
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said: "If this area is blown open, there's an underground passage."
Liu Hao was shocked: "Really?"
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said: "Ancient paths refer to abandoned trade routes that were once developed. But in this map, have you seen any signs of development?"
Liu Hao ventured: "...Isn't the key point that they're abandoned?"
"Of course not!" Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said, "Based on my analysis, this area was originally the lower reaches of a river. The entire region was submerged, so they built underground passages. But later, as the terrain rose and the water flow decreased, this area surfaced, and the passages were abandoned."
Liu Hao was dumbfounded: "Isn't this just a system map?"
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger said: "System map parameters also have prototypes. Sanyao's production is exquisite, with rigorous location selection. For almost every large battlefield, you can find its prototype. It just connects different maps together to form a complete large map."
Hundred Meter Flying Dagger drew a circle with his finger: "What I know is that from this section to this section, there's a remnant underground passage."
Liu Hao looked at him: "So..."
"So..." Hundred Meter Flying Dagger withdrew his hand, raised his head and smiled: "You're the commander, Liu Hao."
Liu Hao snapped out of it, realizing he had unconsciously been led by his thinking, and laughed awkwardly.
His strength was dazzlingly powerful, making people instinctively trust and rely on him.
This was the legendary Hundred Meter Flying Dagger.
The audience erupted in screams:
"So cool. Oh my god, this guy is so cool!"
"Brother Dao, teach me modeling!"
"After playing Sanyao for so many years, how did I not know there's an underground passage here?"
"This kind of passage can't be broken through by force. You can't even find it without locating the entrance."
"Does anyone know how old Brother Dao is?"
The focus and topics in the stadium were all gathered on the Red Team's side. The administrators then switched perspectives to Lian Sheng's team.
At this moment, they were advancing according to their earlier arrangements.
Their start was somewhat awkward because right outside was a winding river. The water occupied at least half the road's width. Detouring to regroup wasted some time, and to prevent overcrowding later, their formation had to be stretched long.
So by the time the Red Team had crossed half the distance, they had just exited the first river section.
Zhou Shirui was already quite outstanding. He first reconstructed the most crucial mountain wall section of the map, then worked hard to control their team's positions and order.
Compared to Hundred Meter Flying Dagger, he was much slower. But Lian Sheng's team couldn't see the opposing map, so they were already pleasantly surprised by their current progress.
For a second-year student, his future was undoubtedly bright.
The atmosphere on both sides was relaxed.
Lian Sheng barked a reminder: "Don't let your guard down. The other side might know more about map utilization than we do! I think you should understand Hundred Meter Flying Dagger better than me!"
She sat on the grass by the river, listening to the sound of water flowing gently past her ears. Occasionally, a gust of wind would blow and mess up her headscarf.
Lian Sheng stood up and removed everything she could from her body, feeling much lighter.
"Ahead is the plains. Comrades, regroup before advancing. Although there aren't obvious cover points, we might encounter intense frontal clashes, so stay alert at all times. Elite squads, take positions on both flanks. Vanguard mechs, hold the center." Lian Sheng said, "Based on our marching speed, the other side has likely already reached the plains. Scouts, stay sharp!"
Ye Buqing led a small scouting squad ahead, while the rest followed cautiously behind.
Soon, Ye Buqing reported back: "They're stationed at the front of the mountain wall area! Numbers still unclear. A small squad has spotted us and is giving chase."
Zhou Shirui asked: "Where exactly?"
Ye Buqing marked the location for them: "A row of mechs—looks like quite a few—blocking the path to the mountain wall."
Lian Sheng rubbed her chin: "What are they doing blocking there? That position is neither good for advancing nor retreating."
The map ahead hadn't been uncovered yet—only a mountain wall was visible.
Zhou Shirui pulled the map back and closed his eyes to recall.
He wasn't extremely familiar with this map, but he remembered there wasn't anything noteworthy about it.
Lian Sheng rested her chin on one hand, watching the map warily. Though the situation wasn't clear yet, she felt the other side might have a trick up their sleeve. She prepared to slow the team's pace to probe their intentions.
"Holy shit! Explosion!" A squad member suddenly shouted, "Watch out, it's an ambush!"
Lian Sheng and Zhou Shirui were both shocked. Their eyes darted upward to see the team's numbers plummeting.
