First Battlefield Commander! - Chapter 100
Chapter 100: Chapter 100
The several supervising officers handed the energy guns scavenged from fallen comrades to Fang Jianchen and Ji Fangxiao. After all, energy guns weren't convenient for continuous firing—alternating between them could significantly boost combat effectiveness. They then hung the remaining guns on themselves.
The group, burdened with heavy firearms, moved to the middle-front section of the formation.
"Forward! No retreat allowed!" the supervisors shouted from the rear. "Everyone find your positions! There are plenty of cover points along this stretch—behind corners, behind metal notice boards, even behind trash cans if necessary! Get into position quickly!"
The rookie soldiers panicked as they scrambled to crouch behind corners. They were utterly unaccustomed to this and had no idea how to choose suitable positions.
"There, there, and over there," Fang Jianchen pointed out several spots. "Can you get up to higher floors? Higher floors would be best. Hey, don't all cram together like that—what are you doing? Making pancakes?"
Lian Sheng commanded, "Ninth Company! Ninth Company, move to the right flank and try to flank them from both sides!"
Before long, the two forces converged, and the soldiers engaged in direct gunfire on the streets.
Fang Jianchen had three guns, while Ji Fangxiao had two.
In the current situation, snipers clearly dominated the battlefield. But could a sniper single-handedly turn the tide? Against a large-scale clash with generally high-quality troops, it wasn't likely. But with a small squad of five hundred and no ammunition restrictions, Fang Jianchen proved with his skills that it was indeed possible.
At the start of the battle, Fang Jianchen chose to hide behind a trash can at an intersection, cautiously observing the situation. Based on the bullet impacts and traces around him, he deduced the enemy's direction. Then, through the gaps above, he carefully confirmed their exact hiding spots.
Just from looking, he could tell many of them were novices. Even if not complete beginners, they were far from professionals.
Though energy guns were relatively easy to handle with low operational difficulty, the skill level of the shooters was still clearly evident. Their aiming and firing speed was too slow, making them easy targets. Even if they initially chose good positions, after firing a shot, they didn't think to relocate. After a few repetitions, they might as well have been standing out in the open.
Fang Jianchen shook his head and sighed: How fair of Sanyao to make both sides equally terrible.
Looking at the scene before him, he was moved beyond words. What kind of considerate cannon fodder would willingly line themselves up for his shots?
After mentally mapping out all the positions, Fang Jianchen took a deep breath and officially began his campaign.
He slightly tensed his back leg to raise his line of sight. The gun spun between his hands, sweeping over the top of the trash can. With minor adjustments left and right, a white beam shot out—a distant soldier who had been aiming collapsed, eliminated.
He ducked slightly, grabbed another gun with his left hand, then leaned back slightly to peek out again, firing from a different angle.
The person on the left hadn't even appeared yet. The muzzle swiftly shifted right, locking onto a black spherical object—another shot, another fallen comrade.
There wasn't the slightest hesitation or pause. After firing, his gaze immediately dropped to switch guns, already confident he had hit his target.
This crisp, decisive, and utterly composed demeanor stood in stark contrast to the flustered and disoriented comrades around him, making him appear all the more impressive.
Fang Jianchen heard an involuntary exclamation from the soldier beside him: "Holy shit? Are you cheating? Share some of that with me?"
His mood instantly improved, and he smirked at the enemy—though unfortunately, his face was hidden.
Fang Jianchen had always been a fast shooter, something he took great pride in. His dynamic vision was exceptional, and his hand-eye coordination was superb. With just a glance, as long as the target was in a shootable state, the bullet would already be on its way.
The enemy side suspiciously glanced in his direction a few times but couldn't pinpoint him. Even if they had, there was little they could do—none of them had his firing speed.
Fang Jianchen cycled through his three guns, clearing out an entire flank of the enemy.
Feeling the recoil in his palms, Fang Jianchen remarked, "Honestly, I think old-school guns are more thrilling. The 'bang bang bang' sound just gets the blood pumping. I demand some background music!"
Cheng Ze, who was busy pushing forward with the team to set up signal converters, replied, "Deputy Commander, have the guy next to you sing you a song. He's the only one with free time right now."
The soldier beside Zhou Shirui, dressed as the commander: "..."
He hugged his arms and turned away with a huff. Did these people have no sense of seriousness in a competition?!
Meanwhile, in the next block over, Ji Fangxiao was negotiating with the soldier across from him: "If you act as bait, I can guarantee your safety."
The soldier resolutely shook his head.
Ji Fangxiao turned to another soldier and repeated, "Just cross the street from right to left. A few seconds, and it's a win-win."
That soldier also shook his head without hesitation.
Ji Fangxiao shook his head in turn. Without any leadership authority, he was truly lonely as snow.
Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted movement, raised his gun, and fired. The player count on the map dropped by one.
"Ooh~" the soldier to his left said. "You can hit them just fine on your own. Why do you need bait?"
Ji Fangxiao explained, "If I focus on one direction, it takes at least three minutes for the enemy to peek out once. But if someone stirs things up, they might peek out three times in one minute."
He didn't have Fang Jianchen's rapid-fire ability. In a heated gunfight like this, recklessly scouting for enemies was dangerous.
The soldier to his left weakly said, "Give them... a little mercy."
As they spoke, the soldier to his right was shot while attempting to fire and collapsed from the impact.
"You'd have died with more dignity as bait," Ji Fangxiao said, disappointed. He glanced around, seized the moment, dashed over, and grabbed the fallen soldier's weapon, holding it up. "This is your greatest achievement this match."
The soldier who witnessed it all: "..."
How cruel. How utterly cruel reality was.
After setting up a signal converter, Lian Sheng carefully moved forward. Checking the player count comparison on the map, she laughed. "Who said our team was a mess? We're holding our own just fine."
Fang Jianchen gloated, "Heh, as if they could compare to my marksmanship."
Lian Team (4822) vs. Xia Team (4811)
Lian Sheng's team had even lost a few to friendly fire at the start, yet now, after clashing, they still had slightly more players than Xia's team.
But in such a short time, both sides had lost nearly two hundred players—clearly, the fighting was intense.
The Xia Team's company commander was leading the charge at the front. After fighting for a while, he realized their formation had unknowingly thinned, with a noticeable gap on the right flank where soldiers were scrambling to fill in. Frowning, he said, "Does the enemy have sharpshooters that good? Or did they assemble an entire firing squad?"
"Don't blame the enemy for being skilled—blame our teammates for being idiots," the man beside him said. "Teammates are randomly assigned, meaning the skill gap between enemy and ally soldiers isn't that big."
They had brought a single company of five hundred, while the enemy had a full battalion of a thousand.
The company commander decisively ordered, "Fall back! Retreat west! Right flank, regroup—don't push forward anymore! Retreat immediately!"
Fang Jianchen, cradling his three beloved guns, said, "They're retreating."
Lian Sheng: "Pursue! All units, advance!"
The soldiers raised their guns and gave chase. After chasing them across two streets, the enemy gradually scattered before vanishing entirely.
Fang Jianchen added, "They're gone."
Lian Sheng: "Let them go. Doesn't matter. Regroup and prepare to set up more signal converters. Sixth and Ninth Companies, split up again and continue forward as before. First and Seventh Companies on the flanks—your job is to guard the signal towers. Patrol the central area extensively! There might be stragglers in our territory!"
The commentator, Stroke of Brilliance, exclaimed, "Lian Sheng's team's individual combat skills are incredible. They're practically on par with professional veterans!"
Liliana: "Different specialties. Their precision in stationary shooting is indeed impressive."
"Is this where the reversal begins?" Stroke of Brilliance said gravely. "But Lian's team still lacks formation, and this victory relied partly on numerical advantage. The main forces haven't clashed yet—Lian's biggest weakness remains unaddressed."
Liliana said, "Only flaws that are exposed with no room for adjustment can be called weaknesses. Long-planned strategies that can be adapted are at most minor annoyances."
Stroke of Brilliance: "You seem quite confident in them."
Liliana: "Hah. I'm just sufficiently disappointed in the other side."
The comments erupted.
"Here it is—Liliana's signature sarcasm!"
"Is she firmly siding with Lian Sheng now? She keeps hyping them up."
"Someone who sees the truth has arrived. *adjusts glasses* Don't forget, while Lian Sheng is the protagonist here, this is essentially a challenge against a studio. And whose studio is it? Hundred Meter Flying Dagger's!"
"Wait, now that you mention it, wasn't Hundred Meter Flying Dagger formerly of the Sixth Army?"
"No... wonder..."
"Damn it! Can't this guy go five minutes without mocking someone?"
"Hundred Meter Flying Dagger is being unusually low-key today. The Blade Master isn't even deputy commander? What a waste!"
"He's letting their excellent deputy commander—his younger brother—shine today. -.-"
"This just proves Liliana is biased and playing favorites. Keep making excuses for her."
"I can't stand these brainless fans! If she were biased, could she transmit that bias into the game? Are you kidding me?"
"They're using spies—such a dirty tactic—and still fighting like garbage. Who's to blame? Their own inability to shape their crap into something presentable? Give me a break!"
"Liliana is just stating facts. The fans' complaints are questionable at best."
"Xia Yanfeng must be begging on her knees for them to shut up. I used to be a casual fan, but now I'm practically a professional hater! I don't even know what I've endured these past thirty minutes!"
Noon, 12:00.
Sun Yan and Lin Lie finished lunch and walked to the front desk, where a crowd had gathered around a table displaying a holographic video.
They were so engrossed that they didn't notice the two women's arrival.
Sun Yan asked, "What are you watching?"
The man sitting in the chair visibly startled, instinctively reaching to turn it off. Perhaps due to nerves, he fumbled several times before succeeding. He then hurriedly stood and saluted.
The others scattered, saluting awkwardly.
The man stood at attention and cautiously replied, "Reporting, Colonels! It's a match between Xia Yanfeng and students from Alliance University. Xia Yanfeng... do you know her?"
Sun Yan said, "I've heard of her. A celebrity, right?"
"Yes," the man said. "Liliana is commentating. It's trending online, so... during our break, we took a quick look."
Sun Yan frowned. "Colonel Liliana? She's commentating a Sanyao match?"
She glanced at the screen, catching a fleeting glimpse of a figure, and said, "Oh, isn't that my son? Who's the commander?"
The man said, "Piaoqi Great General—real name Lian Sheng."
Sun Yan looked at Lin Lie. "Isn't that your daughter?"
The others gasped, then tactfully stepped aside to give them a better view.
Sun Yan said excitedly, "Xiao Liu, get some chairs. Let's all watch. Make it bigger."
The others glanced at Lin Lie's expressionless face and felt a chill.
"Hurry up," Sun Yan urged. "Everyone's on holiday except us researchers. A little break won't hurt. It's just a match—why sneak around?"
After repelling Xia Team's first assault, the two soldiers from Sixth and Ninth Companies responsible for carrying signal converters, under escort, returned to the hidden points to set them up. The main force continued advancing.
Lian Sheng said, "Fang Jianchen, stay behind. We'll lie in wait together."
Fang Jianchen waved his arms. "Now you recognize my worth!"
He slipped away from the group amid the chaos and hid behind a corner wall, waiting for the main force to disperse.
Fang Jianchen checked the sky, then the street, then pulled up the map.
His marker had been altered on the map, showing him following the main force forward. But after running here, he had no idea where he was.
Ultimately, the so-called map was just a model created by data analysts. It wasn't guaranteed to be perfectly accurate—just a reference for commanders to analyze the situation.
Lian Sheng urged, "Are you here yet? Where are you? If you leave the main force, report your position regularly, please."
Fang Jianchen said, "I might be... lost."
The others: "..."
Lian Sheng sighed. "You are truly a child beloved by the heavens."
"Of course," Fang Jianchen said, hugging his gun. "But the cardinal directions have no love for me."
Lian Sheng continued, "Otherwise, with your IQ, I can't fathom how you've survived this long."
"..." Fang Jianchen snapped, "Screw you!"
Zhou Shirui: "Describe landmarks or store names around you."
Fang Jianchen looked up. "Little Sweetheart Pet Shop."
Zhou Shirui immediately said, "Then you're at 136.285. Turn left and go straight for two hundred meters. When you see a bank, turn right. You'll find Lian Sheng."
Xia Team's raiding squad, after being counterattacked by two companies, retreated. To avoid annihilation, they split up—some fleeing toward their base, others hiding within Lian's territory.
One soldier crouched behind a glass window not far from a signal converter, checking the troop distribution on his map. He asked over comms, "We're in position here. Is the forward team ready?"
The company commander ahead replied, "Third and Fifth Companies are in position, ready to attack at any moment."
The commander added, "I'll scout their defenses again. They have lookouts on high ground, and the signal converter I just set up might be at risk. Prepare for contingencies."
The voice on comms said, "Understood."
The commander took a deep breath and addressed his soldiers: "On the battlefield, nothing is more important than intelligence. Clearly, the enemy knows nothing about us, while we know them inside out. So, forget about that earlier gunfight!"
Raising his weapon, the commander declared, "Lady Luck is on our side. Ready? Move out!"
