First Battlefield Commander! - Chapter 50
Chapter 50: Soldier
No one expected Lian Sheng to be selected—except perhaps herself. Maybe she was the opposite of normal people, utterly unable to imagine herself as a mere spectator.
Watching others perform would probably drive her mad.
Ever since she returned, her roommates had been looking at her differently.
"Did you secretly study command behind our backs?"
Lian Sheng shrugged. "I'd also have to secretly sign up for competitions behind your backs."
"Wow, you're going to compete!" the petite and cute one among her roommates exclaimed. "Do you want us to cheer for you?"
Lian Sheng replied, "You're welcome."
The league matches were open to the public. There were live streams online, and the stadium also broadcasted live matches. However, due to the lengthy duration and the difficulty in adjusting perspectives, the live broadcasts often missed many highlights. Most people opted to watch edited replays afterward.
Two days later, registrations officially closed. The system began assigning roles for the match. The names of several commanders and officers were announced.
Neither of the two overall commanders for this match were from their school. Based on their surnames, the teams were designated as the Chu Team and the Liu Team. Ji Fangxiao and Zhao Zhuoluo were assigned as officers to the Liu Team, while Lu Mingyuan was assigned as deputy commander to the Chu Team.
Lian Sheng's selection with zero points caused an uproar. This was unprecedented in history—after all, no one had ever maintained such a perfect zero by their third year.
Students from other schools, upon discovering this, flooded the official forum with posts questioning the decision. The contrast! Their hearts simply couldn't balance it!
The students of Alliance University remained silent, waiting for the day these critics would be proven wrong. For some reason, they were particularly looking forward to it, even feeling a little excited.
Lu Mingyuan came to find her in advance and asked, "Is that zero-pointer you?"
Lian Sheng replied, "I imagine there aren't many people who can score zero."
Lu Mingyuan said, "Then you're on our team. I just got the points list for our side's members."
Identify people by their points.
"Since you've never participated before, I just came to remind you," Lu Mingyuan said. "This match's map is probably an ancient battlefield."
To eliminate interference from weapons and technology, ancient battlefields were obviously the best for showcasing command skills and students' combat abilities. Among the randomly selected maps for league matches, ancient battlefields made up seventy percent.
Lian Sheng nodded. This was good news.
Lu Mingyuan asked, "Have you used the equipment before?"
Lian Sheng: "Yes."
"It's pretty much like real-life combat," Lu Mingyuan gestured for her. "Make sure all the equipment is properly worn. Running and moving will be in place, but all data is transmitted realistically. That means how high you can jump is how high the system character jumps. What actions you can perform are what the system character can perform."
Lian Sheng was just a foot soldier. In such a massive battlefield of ten thousand, her chances of survival were actually slim. But with her points, who knew when she'd be selected again? The opportunity was rare, and it was good for her to experience it firsthand.
The day before the league match, the system announced the factions. Meng Jiangwu also came to ask—he had successfully been assigned to the Chu Team. Another friend.
The match officially began at nine in the morning on Friday.
The live broadcast was set up in the stadium, while they had to report to the training room.
Lian Sheng swiped her card to enter and selected her station. After putting on the gear, she waited for the start.
This time, she appeared directly on an empty stretch of sandy ground, with a row of inventory floating in midair.
A gentle system voice said, "Please select your equipment."
Lian Sheng looked down. She was only wearing a pair of straw sandals, shorts that reached her calves, and a thin white shirt.
Pathetically shabby.
The inventory contained all sorts of armor and cold weapons, dazzling in variety, but all the equipment was grayed out and unselectable. Purchasing required points, and Lian Sheng had zero.
The only thing she could take was a wooden stick.
After selecting it, Lian Sheng discovered it was a meter-long stick, only three fingers thick. The note read: "Do not use to block sharp weapons. It will break~"
Lian Sheng: "..." Absolutely toxic.
She twirled it in her hand, decided it would do, and closed the page. Clicked "Ready."
Five minutes later, a white light flashed, and Lian Sheng was teleported to the starting point, mixed in with the crowd. She looked back and saw rows of tents. Their group stood densely packed, but at a glance, there couldn't be more than five hundred.
It seemed their side's five thousand were divided into separate positions.
"Chu Team login complete."
"Liu Team login complete."
Lian Sheng looked up and saw huge red characters appear in midair.
"Three."
"Two."
"One."
"Begin!"
Immediately, the commander's voice sounded in her ears: "Scouts, the selected scouts move forward now. The map is open; everyone can check it themselves."
Lian Sheng quickly opened it.
The originally pitch-black map gradually revealed its layout as the scouts advanced, displaying the terrain.
Their camp was located on the far right of the map, on flat ground. From what they could see now, there were steep mountains on both the left and right sides. Ahead was a checkpoint, unoccupied.
At the start, both sides were mostly scouting the map and adjusting their formations.
The commander continued: "The supply team will now escort provisions to the red point I've marked."
He hid the provisions in a mountain path to the left of the camp. From the terrain, it was relatively safe, easy to defend, and convenient.
After the match began, every two hours, soldiers needed to return to camp to rest for ten minutes. Otherwise, their characters would enter a state of hunger, with slowed reactions and reduced speed. After another two hours, they would die outright.
Capturing the enemy's provisions would grant the entire faction a twenty-point bonus. This also meant that if their provisions were stolen, their defeat would be all but certain within two hours.
Commander: "Aside from officers, select ten people from each unit based on points to guard the flag."
If a side's numbers dropped below five hundred, or if their flag was toppled, they would immediately be declared defeated.
Commander: "Charioteers and light cavalry, prepare to assemble at the yellow point I've marked. Wu Ke, select a hundred elites from the entire team to hold the middle. Heavy cavalry, assemble at the blue point."
Their unit was somewhat disorganized, with no one stepping forward to organize them yet.
They were probably part of the infantry. There were archers, swordsmen, and spearmen. But all were armed with cold weapons familiar to Lian Sheng.
The soldier next to Lian Sheng kept sneaking glances at her but never spoke up. Finally, one couldn't resist exclaiming, "A girl... and she's carrying a stick?!"
Everyone turned to look.
Those within her line of sight maintained some semblance of respect, but those hidden in the crowd began commenting freely.
"Could it be... the legendary zero-pointer?"
"Truly legendary! And someone's wearing shorts? Zero points are terrifying."
"Heavens, she's actually on our side, in our unit! We're doomed."
"Alliance University has fallen. Now anyone can get in?"
"And it's a girl. My dreams of a hidden master are shattered."
"Why would a zero-pointer even sign up? Isn't she just taking up a spot?"
But there were still Alliance University students in this unit. One soldier retorted, "You're all bottom-feeders here. Who are you to look down on anyone?"
To be precise, they were the bottom-feeders of this league match—otherwise, they wouldn't have been assigned to the infantry. But within their respective schools, those selected were generally high achievers.
As soon as he spoke, two guys beside him quickly pulled him back.
The soldier shook them off angrily. "This is too much. Why are you stopping me? We're from the same school, and she's a girl. Are you just going to let her be bullied?"
His buddies soothed him. "Calm down, calm down."
In terms of group combat command, Lian Sheng had beaten Ji Fangxiao.
In terms of one-on-one combat, Lian Sheng had also beaten Ji Fangxiao.
Who was bullying whom wasn't certain—no need to stir things up.
The voices opposite gradually quieted.
They just felt somewhat indignant, along with some prejudice.
Alliance University's admission standards were notoriously high, and those who had been rejected harbored some jealousy. Their idealized institution had produced a zero-pointer—the contrast twisted their minds a little. But after a few comments, they didn't plan to escalate.
However, if things ended here, Lian Sheng could already foresee how they would suppress and ignore her later.
Without a word, she swung her stick, took a step forward, and struck a tall, burly guy on the arm.
His muscles twitched, and his weapon clattered to the ground. The laughter died instantly. Before he could even look up, another strike landed on his knee.
The guy's left knee buckled, nearly sending him to the ground. He barely steadied himself, but before he could adjust, Lian Sheng raised her stick and struck his back. Unable to maintain his balance, he face-planted.
A gasp rose from the crowd.
"So what if you have a sword? Can you even hold onto your weapon? What's so great about high points? That's just your past glory. What's so funny about gender? You're only proud of the sex you were born with." Lian Sheng rested the stick on her shoulder and looked at him. "But did your mother teach you how to fight while you were still in her womb?"
Nearby soldiers helped the guy up. He wiped his face fiercely, wanting to step forward but was held back.
"Hey! No infighting. Be careful."
The guy nodded stiffly. "At least I knew in the womb not to cause trouble for others."
Lian Sheng: "So in the womb, you already liked seeing a woman and immediately labeled her as trouble?"
The guy was stunned, his lips twitching as he failed to find a retort.
Just then, someone at the front shouted, "Everyone, quiet! Fall in!"
The crowd turned and began forming ranks.
Lin Lie knocked on the door and entered the control room. The walls were lined with large screens displaying different perspectives of the battlefield.
The department head turned in surprise. "Colonel Lin, what brings you here?"
Lin Lie said, "Go ahead with your work."
The department head patted a technician's shoulder. "Switch more of the footage to Lian Sheng. That foot soldier in the third infantry unit—the most conspicuous one."
Then he turned back. "Please, have a seat."
Lin Lie nodded. "Sorry for the intrusion."
