DHMB - Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Kai Yun opened the door to a new world. Hiding in the shadows, she fiddled with the communicator for a long time and finally realized that Sanyao allowed teammates to send messages to each other. To simulate the realism of combat, the communicator was pinned to the chest of the uniform and muted by default.
This was completely unreasonable!
She was stunned!
Kai Yun took it out and checked, finding that Lei Kaiding had already sent her over a dozen messages. She skipped through them, strongly feeling the painful struggle of a tenacious life in its final moments.
"You just ran off, what am I supposed to do?!"
"Are you still alive?"
"How long do I have to run? Lu Que isn't here now, it's the best time to rack up points. Tell me your location, and we'll attack from both sides!"
"I didn't lie to you, I really didn't lie to you, believe me just one more time! If I keep running, I'm going to die!"
"Damn it, some guy with a whip behind me keeps whipping my butt, is he sick?!"
"Huff... huff..."
"Where are you? Are you still alive?"
"Damn, damn, damn!"
"..."
Kai Yun spoke carefully into the communicator, saying a single word: "Hello?"
Lei Kaiding's roar immediately came from the other side: "Hello your sister!"
Kai Yun encouraged him, saying, "Don't cry! Be strong!"
"I can't take it anymore!" Lei Kaiding hadn't expected there would be a moment he wanted to burst into tears. "This is too hard! How did I end up with a teammate like you?!"
No one knew what Lei Kaiding had gone through in that long half hour. It was as if he had been forgotten by the whole world, forced to run on a path leading a horde of zombies, pushing his personal best marathon speed.
If... if he hadn't courted death back then, hadn't thought about the two of them counter-killing everyone, he wouldn't be in this situation now. He could have teamed up with his buddies from the First Military Academy and happily snatched kills.
Now he was a lone star, but the feeling of his lungs about to explode wasn't happy at all.
Why didn't he give up?
Initially, it was the power of the cameras supporting him. Later, when he thought Kai Yun might be dead, it was the necessity of advancing that supported him.
After that, there was no power left, just stubbornness!
When he saw Kai Yun appear before him, his emotions were incredibly complex. The conflicting desires of "hoping she was dead so he could burn incense for her" and "thank goodness she's alive, I'm saved" constantly attacked him.
"Hurry up and come support me..." Lei Kaiding found he could let bygones be bygones, moved by his own great character: "These guys are mostly mid to low level. You can come and force them to switch sides, or kill them. If we get enough from this wave, we'll have enough points for all three of us to advance!"
Kai Yun: "How many people are behind you?"
"How should I know?" Lei Kaiding said. "There are too many to count."
Running in circles like this, more and more participants joined the chase, like collecting stamps.
It started out of boredom, but after chasing for so long, it had become a kind of faith.
If they didn't fight to the death, they wouldn't be able to face themselves.
Kai Yun asked curiously, "Why don't you switch sides?" After all, he was already so miserable.
"No way!" Lei Kaiding firmly refused, his voice trembling with his shaky breath. "I'll get booed!"
Kai Yun: "By whom?"
Lei Kaiding answered loudly in his heart: The audience!
He could die a heroic death, but he couldn't toy with the audience's expectations!
"I can't abandon my teammate," Lei Kaiding said profoundly. "Difficulties can be avoided, but responsibility cannot! I'm your last teammate—damn it! The guy behind me is whipping me again!"
Kai Yun was stunned once more.
At a time like this, how could Lei Kaiding's idol burden be heavier than her king burden? What was wrong with this kid?!
She sat cross-legged, about to comfort her little teammate, when she suddenly heard a faint sound of footsteps.
Kai Yun looked up, tensing her muscles, ready to attack at any moment. She saw Lu Que step onto the stairs around the corner.
He was slightly out of breath, his face still pale, but his eyes held a glint of excitement, the kind one has when facing prey.
Seeing Kai Yun, he pulled at the corner of his mouth, giving a forced, humorless smile, and said, "You run really fast."
"Uh... if you want someone to run with you," Kai Yun sincerely recommended, "my teammate is a much better choice!"
Lu Que let out a few hoarse, low "heh heh" sounds from his throat. His expression was at least five parts similar to Lei Kaiding when he was driven mad with anger. Kai Yun consciously tightened her grip on the communicator and darted out from the side.
Lu Que shouted sharply, "Stop!"
Kai Yun rushed into the open street, not daring to stop, and called down to Lei Kaiding: "Hello, hello!"
"Hurry up!" Lei Kaiding pleaded. "Don't just disappear suddenly again, okay?"
Kai Yun said, "I ran into Lu Que."
Kai Yun asked, "Should I bring him along?"
Lei Kaiding: "..."
Maybe it was better to just say goodbye.
Lu Que was already tired from chasing. Looking at Kai Yun's retreating figure, his anger flared up. He shouted from behind, "Why are you running?!"
Kai Yun replied righteously, "I have a family to support! There are three of us in our team! The decisive battle at the Forbidden Peak isn't supposed to be at the end?"
Lu Que: "Your team still has one more person!"
"Lei Kaiding?" Kai Yun retorted, "I think he's almost done for!"
As she spoke, she used the ground for leverage, sharply changed direction, and once again flashed into a complexly designed building, heading straight for the upper floors.
Seeing Kai Yun about to escape again, Lu Que was completely enraged. He raised his weapon and began to wreak havoc on the surroundings.
The glass on both sides of the street shattered under his attacks. He picked up everything he could lift and threw it forcefully at Kai Yun.
Kai Yun dodged the blade energy slashed out by his iron claws, listening to the constant crashing and shattering sounds around her. A thought suddenly flashed in her mind, giving her an idea.
Sanyao's simulated combat system didn't allow hot weapons, and they wouldn't appear in the scenario. However, other facilities, such as power and network, were very complete, deserving the description "fully realistic simulation." This was because Sanyao encouraged students to use the environment for cover or counterattacks, as various unexpected situations would occur in reality.
Kai Yun leaped onto the windowsill, smiled at the approaching Lu Que, and said, "My Master told me that a woman who leaves is like spilled water, never chase! I've passed on the message, farewell!"
Lu Que's fist, wrapped in killing intent, struck towards her, but Kai Yun let go first, flipping backward and falling.
Lu Que's expression froze slightly. He quickly walked to the window and glanced down. The image of the black figure falling suddenly overlapped with a certain image in his memory, making his lips appear even paler. He took two steps back, shook his head forcefully, and after recovering for a moment, turned back to go down the stairs.
The audience who witnessed this scene firsthand were stunned.
This was a five-story commercial building! Even with Lightness Skill, jumping down would likely result in serious injury.
The camera view immediately shifted, changing the perspective to directly above her head.
The scenery before their eyes rapidly receded, and half of what they saw was a blur. This gave the audience a strong sense of immersion; they even squinted, afraid to look directly.
Using the occasional protruding structures on the side of the building, Kai Yun continuously slowed her momentum. Finally, with a small jump, she rolled on the grass in the courtyard and landed safely.
After this extreme jump performance ended, they still couldn't forget the visual impact on their minds. They opened their mouths, unable to make a suitable sound.
This couldn't be described as just being bold due to high skill, could it? Did this kid grow up doing parkour?
Outside the building, Kai Yun, having temporarily shaken off Lu Que, took out her communicator again and whispered into it, "Lei Lei Lei Lei! Are you there?"
Lei Kaiding spat, his voice already slurred, indicating he was indeed close to his limit. But he still risked disrupting his breathing to complain to Kai Yun.
"Screw your Lei Lei!"
"Lei Lei," Kai Yun said, "I have a way to deal with all the pursuers behind you. Then we'll have enough points to advance!"
Lei Kaiding's spirit lifted: "Tell me quickly!"
Kai Yun said reluctantly, "But doing this will also put you in extreme danger!"
"Do you think I'm not in enough danger right now?" Lei Kaiding wanted to spit on her face. "Kill them, at all costs!"
He had been chased into a rage too. All the routes he had ever taken combined weren't as long as the distance he had run today. Only their lives could mourn his lost stamina.
"Okay, since you've made up your mind, I won't stop you!" Kai Yun said. "Lead them back to the training building, I'll be waiting for you inside!"
Lei Kaiding's brain wasn't working well due to lack of oxygen. It took him a while to react when he heard Kai Yun mention the training building.
"You know how to use computers? Can you hack the training building's network to attack?" Lei Kaiding said. "That's a government training building."
Kai Yun said, "I can attack, but I can't hack."
Lei Kaiding was on the verge of collapse, supported only by willpower. He couldn't run like a perpetual motion machine for another hour; he might fall in ten minutes, and then he would just die.
He decided to trust Kai Yun, mainly because he desperately wanted to rest. So he gritted his teeth, changed direction, and boldly headed from the edge of the map towards the training building.
A group of people followed him without any precautions, cursing and continuing the chase.
Ten minutes later.
Kai Yun hid in the corridor on the second floor and whispered, "Are you here?"
Her answer was Lei Kaiding's heavy breathing.
Kai Yun said, "Be strong!"
Another five minutes passed, and Lei Kaiding's weak voice asked, "And then? The training system isn't even on?"
Kai Yun got up, found all the red indicators, pressed the buttons, pulled the levers, chopped the control panel... Amidst the crackling of electricity, Kai Yun, her deeds hidden, exited the door.
Although her Rebuilt Barren Star was empty, the defense and security system of the underground city was no less sophisticated than the Alliance's. She kept the warnings from above firmly in mind.
Government training buildings would store many prohibited weapons, including hot weapons. They should use a security system of the same level as Rebuilt Barren Star.
When the main control room was unmanned, and it detected a large number of unfamiliar faces not registered in the system—which were the "Star Pirates" in this match—and the number of friendly personnel was too low, while the system was under attack, it would activate a powerful attack program.
Lei Kaiding's voice came through the communicator again, asking, "And then?"
Then came the sound of explosions, muffled by the soundproof metal door, only emitting a slight thud.
After that, a few wisps of black smoke drifted out from the gaps in the building.
Kai Yun stood on the vibrating ground, saluting solemnly towards the building.
Goodbye, Lei Lei.
You led the team to AD! VANCE!
