Chapter 55

The nail had pierced right through Zuo Luohuan's palm. She hadn't treated it, just wrapped it with a cloth for a few days. Instead of healing, the edges of the wound had festered. Ji Yuezhi lowered his eyes, his long lashes fluttering like butterfly wings. Each blink seemed to make Zuo Luohuan's heart skip a beat. Oblivious, he carefully cleaned the festering edges of the wound, applied medicine, and then wrapped gauze around her palm.

The Omega's focused, indifferent expression reminded the Alpha of those hazy days. Back then, he'd been enveloped in the scent of irises, warm and pliant, loving to nestle in her arms, rubbing his long legs against her. Once he found a comfortable temperature, his beautiful eyes would curve into a sweet, docile smile.

Several times, the Alpha had yearned to kiss the Omega's beautiful eyes. But she remembered that his affection was only due to his heat and the temporary mark, so she always suppressed the urge, even as her arms tightened around him until they ached.

Though the bandaging was finished, Ji Yuezhi didn't stop. He covered her hand with a waterproof film and looked up. "You can wash up now."

Zuo Luohuan snapped back to reality at the sound of his voice. "Thank you." Meeting his gaze, she recalled her inappropriate thoughts and quickly retreated to the bathroom, feeling a bit like she was running away. Halfway through her shower, she stared at her newly bandaged hand, then suddenly remembered she'd left him outside. She wondered if he'd gone.

Ji Yuezhi hadn't left. He returned to the bar, carefully cupped the water glass in his hands, and slowly drank it dry. He glanced at the balcony. It was raining.

He looked towards the bathroom. He was familiar with the layout, having spent those few days here. The rain grew heavier. He pursed his lips, opened the door, went downstairs, and headed to the garage to get his car.

When Zuo Luohuan emerged from the bathroom, she didn't see him and assumed he'd left. Looking at the downpour outside, she frowned. He left in such heavy rain?

Just then, her optical computer lit up. It was a message from Ji Yuezhi. She quickly opened it and saw him sitting in his car, not driving.

"Zuo Luohuan, I'm out of gas," Ji Yuezhi said directly. "Could you lend me some?"

"Where are you?" Zuo Luohuan asked.

Ji Yuezhi looked out the window. "Still in the underground garage, next to your car."

"Wait there for me." Zuo Luohuan closed the message and hurried to the entrance, opening the door and heading downstairs. Before entering the elevator, she saw the middle-aged man who had asked for a cigarette earlier coming out. He nodded to her.

Standing in the elevator, watching the numbers change, Zuo Luohuan felt an inexplicable anxiety. As soon as the doors opened, she strode towards her parking space. Sure enough, there was a car parked next to hers, covered in a thin layer of dust, suggesting it hadn't been driven in a while.

She walked over to the driver's side and bent down to knock on the window.

Ji Yuezhi lowered the window and looked up at her. "Do you have enough gas?"

Zuo Luohuan had come down empty-handed, without any tools to transfer fuel. She opened the car door. "It's raining too hard, and it's getting late. Stay here for the night." Seeing his hesitation, she added, "The clothes your father sent over are still here. You can change."

"...Okay." Ji Yuezhi got out of the car, and they returned to the elevator.

Sharing the same apartment, even the same bedroom, wasn't new to them. But this was the first time they were doing so completely sober, unaffected by any outside influences.

"You take the bedroom; I'll sleep in the guest room," Zuo Luohuan said, opening the bedroom door.

Ji Yuezhi stood at the doorway, looking down at her bandaged hand. "The bedding in the guest room isn't made. How will you sleep? Let's sleep together, just like during the competition."

Zuo Luohuan's throat felt dry. "Okay."

She soon realized the situation was far more complicated than during the training exercise. During his heat, Ji Yuezhi's father, considering an Omega's sensitivity during that time, had chosen clothes made of light, soft fabrics. Back then, Zuo Luohuan had been focused on comforting him and hadn't paid attention to what he was wearing. But now, as Ji Yuezhi changed into an extremely thin, white robe, she uncomfortably averted her gaze. It felt… too thin, almost see-through.

As the Alpha looked away, she caught a glimpse of the subtle curves of his chest beneath the robe.

The bed was large; during the exercise, four or five people could have fit comfortably. But now, Zuo Luohuan wondered if she'd ordered too small a bed.

"I'm sleepy," Ji Yuezhi's cool voice came from beside her. He lay down and closed his eyes as if he hadn't a care in the world, as if he hadn't deliberately chosen a car with no gas and then refrained from filling it up on the way.

Zuo Luohuan touched her tongue to the back of her teeth and chuckled. Her earlier chaotic thoughts had vanished, replaced by the overwhelming presence of the Omega beside her. After turning off the lights, she dared to turn and pull the covers over him. But the Alpha's eyesight was too keen, or perhaps the Omega's exposed collarbone was too pale and striking. Even in the darkness, Zuo Luohuan saw it clearly.

"Goodnight," Ji Yuezhi murmured after she lay down.

In the darkness, Zuo Luohuan smiled. "Goodnight… Captain."

Warm skin practically melted in the Alpha's palm, carrying the Omega's unique, sweet scent. Every Alpha had dreams like this. Zuo Luohuan was no stranger to them, but she rarely indulged, even in her sleep. Perhaps it was her recent mood, but this time, she let herself sink into it.

Pulling open the Omega's white robe, she pressed against him, listening to his suppressed whimpers as her hands tightened around his waist.

Zuo Luohuan's mind was hazy. She only remembered her excitement, the Omega's softness beneath her. When she abruptly woke up, there was no sense of relief, only a jolt of panic. She looked down at the person in her arms, really there, wearing a white robe, sleeping soundly against her neck. Her hand was resting on his waist.

It took her a moment to remember Ji Yuezhi had stayed overnight, sharing her bed. The person who had been lying stiffly on the other side before falling asleep was now curled against her, sleeping soundly.

"..."

Zuo Luohuan froze, acutely aware of her own physical arousal. She squeezed her eyes shut, then forced herself to calm down, glancing at the time: 4:00 AM.

She carefully released him and practically fled the bedroom for the bathroom.

After waking up, Zuo Luohuan didn't go back to sleep. She sat in the living room, aimlessly watching the news, waiting for the person in her bedroom to wake up. — This is crazy. She felt like she had violated Ji Yuezhi. He was so proud; if he knew she…

Zuo Luohuan tossed the remote aside, raised her arm to cover her eyes, her heart sinking.
