Invasion - Chapter 67

Chapter 67

Chapter 67

Perhaps Lao Yao’s luck on this trip really wasn’t very good.

On the way back, they encountered bandits blocking the road.

At that time, the vehicle was driving through some ruins from the old era.

A flock of strange-looking sand rats flew out from the buildings half-buried in yellow sand, their wide wings spread as they flew through the abandoned overpasses, stirring up dust.

Lao Yao, the driver, looked at the tall, towering buildings of the old era outside the window, and couldn't help but think again, it really was a glorious age.

What had caused the complete downfall of such a high-tech human era?

The current world was difficult, making one despair, resources scarce, technology backward, almost everyone struggling to survive in a barren and dark world.

Just as he was thinking this, a red light flashed from the window of a dilapidated building not far ahead.

Someone there! An ambush!

Lao Yao's heart lurched, he slammed on the brakes, wanting to turn around.

But it was clearly too late, their vehicle was surrounded.

It was a notorious group of bandits, their flag bearing a skull symbol, a large group of them.

Black gun barrels, even rocket launchers, protruded from the windows of the surrounding buildings.

Not enemies that the vehicle-mounted weapons on the bus could contend with, and there was only one injured sentinel among them.

It was too late to escape.

Lao Yao and a few passengers got off the bus and negotiated with the bandit leader.

He had been driving this route for twenty years, basically knew all the gangs in this area and every notorious leader.

This wasn’t the strongest armed group, but they were known for their cruelty and perversion.

"All the weapons and money on the bus will be given to you, boss, we won’t resist at all, we just want to live," Lao Yao lowered his head, bowing, his posture humble.

"Weapons, money, and women," a thin man, wrapped in a coat, sat high on a pile of debris, holding a metal beer bottle, taking a casual sip.

"Women…" Lao Yao's expression changed. There weren’t many female passengers on the bus, most were older, only one or two younger.

One of the younger, pretty girls was even a Guide.

He thought of the girl's small, fair face, and felt a pang of sadness in his heart.

Such a fragile little girl, falling into the hands of these people, wouldn’t live for more than a few days. He had seen their methods, he knew how they tortured people.

He once had a younger sister, not very pretty, with dark skin, but very smart and hardworking, she had saved money with him to buy this bus.

But during a trip together, she had been dragged away by thugs like these, her hair pulled.

Since then, he had driven this route, for twenty years, never changing, hoping to see that dark face, so similar to his own, again.

Twenty years of coming and going, not a single glimmer of hope.

"I can give you all the money, I also have an energy stone on the bus, I’ll give it all to you, boss, please spare us, don’t take the people," Lao Yao forced a smile, pleading humbly, hoping these demons would occasionally show mercy.

"There are only a few old ladies on my bus, they’re no- not worth anything."

He thought that the girl should know what was happening, she would make herself look less appealing, hopefully they could slip through.

"As long as they’re female, regardless of their age, they have to stay," the man sitting on the high platform said, his voice cold, light and airy, filled with malice.

Behind him, several fully armed men laughed. "As for what they’ll be used for, that’s none of your business."

Lao Yao lowered his head. In his heart, he had actually known for a long time, having encountered these bandits, the women on the bus couldn't escape.

It would be very lucky if even he could survive.

Those women would have a miserable fate, for the rest of their lives, they would only be able to live like livestock, in darkness, just like his sister. Forever without any news, never seeing their families again.

But what could he do? There were just too many demons, too much malice in this world.

Most people barely survived, dying pathetic and miserable deaths.

He was still trying to struggle, to say something more, when an empty beer bottle was thrown down from the high platform.

It was a metal can, with an expensive brand logo. Golden beer splashed out, onto his graying hair.

The metal bottle hit Lao Yao on the head, bouncing off and falling towards the ground. He didn't even dare to dodge.

He watched, waiting for the bottle to hit the ground with a clang.

Then those demons would come down, take the money, drag the women out of the bus, into the dark ruins.

But the expected metallic sound didn't come.

The middle-aged bus driver, through the beer dripping from his hair, saw a black glove.

That glove steadily caught the empty beer bottle, gently placing it on the ground, as if afraid of waking someone up.

A black shadow flickered past his eyes.

When he rubbed his eyes, wiping away the beer, and looked again, the battle was already over.

The young man who had been sitting in the back of the bus, behind the driver’s seat, was stepping on the high platform of debris, his gun in the skinny bandit leader’s mouth.

His coat was gone, his tight black tank top revealing the strong muscles of his back. The black gloves steadily held the gun, its cold muzzle in the enemy’s mouth, forcing the fierce bandit leader to slowly kneel before him.

Four or five burly men surrounded the bandit leader.

Disbelief was on their faces, their hands clutching their necks, after a while, blood seeped out from between their fingers.

These thugs, who had taken countless lives, could hardly believe that there would be a day when their throats were cut.

Their faces full of shock, covered in blood, they slowly collapsed.

In just an instant, the ghost-like enemy had slit the throats of five people, taking five lives.

Ni Ji held a gun in one hand, the other behind his back, his slender fingers steadily holding a short blade.

The dagger’s white blade was stained with bright red blood, droplets dripping down.

He had taken five lives with a single move, his gun-holding fingers still steady.

Thick blood flowed from the corpses, pooling on the ground beneath his feet.

He stood in the pool of blood, his expression as cold as the steep glaciers on the sea.

He was a true sentinel, a demon of the battlefield, silently taking lives without hesitation, powerful and cold.

He would fire without hesitation the next moment, blowing their brains out.

The bandit leader's legs trembled, the gun in his mouth, unable to speak, he could only clasp his hands together, repeatedly pleading.

"Tell them to get lost," the sentinel looked down at him, pushing the gun in his mouth a little further. "No noise, stay quiet, don’t make any unnecessary sounds, or your head will explode."

Although he didn't understand why he had to stay quiet, the notorious bandit leader repeatedly nodded, indicating his obedience.

He was given a chance to live, the cold gun barrel slowly withdrawn from his mouth, he swallowed, thanking his lucky stars that this was a merciful enemy, his head covered in sweat as he took out his walkie-talkie and gave a series of orders to retreat.

The guns that had been aimed from the windows were withdrawn one by one.

The long-distance bus restarted and quickly left.

Only after leaving the dangerous encirclement, not seeing anyone chasing after them, did the passengers, having narrowly escaped death, come back to their senses.

They were surprised to discover that the girl sitting in the front row, behind the driver’s seat, was still sound asleep.

She didn't seem to know at all what kind of life-or-death situation everyone on the bus had just been through, her eyes closed, sleeping soundly on the shaking bus.

Beside her, where the anonymous sentinel had been sitting, a miniature orca, covered with the sentinel's coat, steadily supported the girl’s head, diligently trying to maintain balance.

It was a mental body, a sentinel’s powerful combat strength, to ordinary people, a rare and mysterious weapon of war.

But at this moment, it was just a genuine leather pillow for a girl sleeping on the bus.

"Is that a killer whale?”

"Wow, a sentinel's mental body, I’ve only seen it on TV before.”

"So cute, its round head doesn't look fierce at all, it seems very well-behaved.”

The passengers who had escaped danger craned their necks to look, whispering to each other.

The sentinel who had saved their lives returned to the bus.

Covered in blood, radiating the killing intent of a murderer, he stood by his seat coldly, frowning at his mental body.

The orca completely ignored him, even turning over in front of him, its soft belly facing up.

The sleeping girl moved, subconsciously hugging its long tail, sleeping even more soundly.

The little orca opened its mouth, revealing its small teeth and pink tongue, letting out a very soft whimper.

The passengers on the bus couldn’t help but whisper in their hearts.

“Wow, so cute.”

“So adorable.”

“Is a mental body like this really a weapon of war? It’s just a mascot, right?”

“It's so arrogant, the sentinel can’t even control it.”

Because the sentinel standing there still radiated the killing intent of a murderer, they didn’t dare to say these things out loud.

After a long time, the cute mental body finally reluctantly gave up its seat to the sentinel, swaying its tail, swimming out of the bus window.

After swimming out of the bus, the orca in mid-air let out a cry, its body expanding in the wind.

At first, it was just a small, cute pillow, then, with a shake of its tail and a sway of its body, it became as large as the bus.

Then it expanded further, the large fish, its black back and white belly, its dorsal fin like a sharp blade, its body like a giant ship in the sea, aggressively swimming back towards where they had just come from.

The bus drove through the silent ruins. From the place behind them, where they had just been ambushed, a few chaotic gunshots and explosions came, then silence returned.

After a while, that giant killer whale, radiating killing intent, returned, swimming alongside the bus.

Its mouth open, blood dripping from between its teeth, scaring the passengers on the bus.

What cute pillow, that was all a lie.

Overlord of the ocean, terrifying beast, its reputation was well-deserved.

Lao Yao, the driver, looking at the large fish swaying its tail by the window, quietly wiped the corners of his wrinkled eyes.

Twenty years. He hadn't found his younger sister, but he had finally seen these people’s retribution.

Retribution!

With the giant killer whale accompanying them, the vehicle smoothly traveled, not encountering any more danger.

The mutated creatures roaming the wilderness were driven away from afar, and the bandits hiding in the ruins didn’t reappear.

Only when the moon rose in the sky, the stars filling the night, did Lin Yuan wake up on the shaky bus.

She yawned, feeling like she had slept very well.

"We were lucky. A safe journey," she said to the sentinel beside her.

Remembering that when she came here from the White Tower, she had encountered quite a few setbacks and dangers along the way, their luck on this return trip was really quite good, nothing had happened.

"Yes, lucky," the sentinel beside her said gently, discreetly pinching his shoulder when she looked out the window.

Lin Yuan felt that the atmosphere in the bus was a little strange. All the passengers, even the driver, seemed to have changed their attitude towards her.

How should she describe it... fear? Shock? Respect? Awe?

In any case, it was very complex, and she didn't know why, she hadn't done anything after getting on the bus, other than sleep.

The well-rested tentacles regained their energy, and seeing the orca that had been accompanying the bus, swimming under the starry sky, happily cheered.

【It's Big Fish!】

【Big Fish has been released.】

【Hi, Big Fish.】

【Sweetie.】

【My candy, my food reserve.】

【Want to play?】

Under the moonlight, the strangely modified bus chugged through the silent ruins.

The giant killer whale swayed its tail fin, swimming through the air, accompanying them.

Countless smooth pink tentacles excitedly wrapped around the orca, chattering noisily.

A few faint whale calls echoed in the cold moonlight.
